72dpi photo resolution- a friendly reminder

As I go through the list of blogs in the morning, there are a few that take a while to load. This is just a friendly reminder to make sure that the photos you are using on your blog are set to a 72 dpi versus 300 dpi.

This is something you can do quite simple if you have photo editing software. I have a free one called GIMP. You can download it for free here : http://www.gimp.org/downloads/

-Under FILE open the image you want to edit
-Under IMAGE go to scale image
-Set the width and height to the size you want
-Make sure you are using pixels
-X resolution set to 72
-Y resolution set to 72
-then hit SCALE
-Save your image and you are all set.

You'll see a big difference in how quick your blog will load.

Re: 72dpi photo resolution- a friendly reminder

Awwww this is definitely something I'm guilty of :( I'll take photos straight from Adobe Camera RAW and put them on my blog at a massive resolution.

BUT! I will say, I take other steps to make my page load faster like only have 5 posts on the main page of my blog, not having tooooo much in my sidebars....

I'm definitely going to use your suggestion and make everything web resolution from now on. Shame on me.

Re: 72dpi photo resolution- a friendly reminder

I find 72 dpi to be too small...
My images are generally 100 dpi, but reduced in size (to match the blog's width) to 540 pixels wide.
My older posts had much bigger pictures and the blog did take longer to load.

72 dpi is web resolution. It's as high as a computer screen can show (macs show 96 I think) so anything over 72 is overkill.

Re: 72dpi photo resolution- a friendly reminder

Would you opt for 72 dpi even in the case of images with text? (Created on Photoshop, as opposed to a vector program.)
Wouldn't there be an increased pixelation of the text?

If you use photoshop, you can "Save for web & devices) and select an optimization quality, so it's all web-ready to go!

Re: 72dpi photo resolution- a friendly reminder

Optimizing the image will make the text more legible, even at 72 dpi.

There may be a free uploading program that optimizes images... not sure on that one though.

Weirdamiga, I've actually noticed the text looks better at lower resolutions. Like megansbeadeddesigns said, if you save for web and devices, it will help out.

Also, if your image has just text, it will look better if it's saved as a PNG file. JPEG files look better for detailed images such as photos.
