Re: Custom Digitizing for Embroidery Patterns

I have quite a complex way of transferring images into patterns, but it's the way I enjoy doing it. I pixellate the item (at the moment I'm doing sprites, so there's no need to do this), then I reduce the colours (as some pictures might have 50+ colours for only 1000 stitches, and then I go through and change any colours that look similar to others (colours you wouldn't notice on the final image). Then I make the pattern in a spreadsheet and use a chart I found online to convert the colours to DMC floss numbers, then finally I print the pattern out and stitch it myself to make sure the colours look okay :). It's a long process but it definitely makes me feel good once done, lol. I could easily do the same for other simple images, no problem!

I end up with something like this;

Re: Custom Digitizing for Embroidery Patterns

I do mainly video game cross stitch, but everything is geeky/nerdy. Similar to Gnot Thorne, I do all of my patterns by hand. I do colour selection by eye which can lead to a lot of second guessing myself, but in the end I am pretty happy with the results. I sometimes revisit my colour choices and test for better ones.

I don't do a lot of pixelating of larger images myself as I try to stay true to the original sprites. That said, I have been able to reduce some pieces to a reasonable size for sewing. I haven't really been asked to digitize anything so I'm not sure what I would charge. I don't know if I would, outside of sewing it myself first. I don't feel confident enough with my colour choices unless I actually worked on the piece through to finish.

I've thought about buying a program to digitize patterns for me but I since I'm trying to keep enjoying the craft-as-a-second-"job" thing, I still do it by hand.

Re: Custom Digitizing for Embroidery Patterns

Hi! Seems like we all create patterns the old way :) I think it's the best to get total control on the final result. I pixelate or just make a sketch of what I want to convert, and open it with vector software. And let's have hours of tiny squares party :) I can be days and days moving them until getting perfection.
It worth the time I think! That's what makes all our designs unique :)

I use a program that you can upload any photo to and convert it over. OR, I can create one from scratch by picking and choosing colors and then manually working out the pattern by hand. I did them by hand a looooong time ago which I loved doing. But playing around in the program is fun too.
