TRICK: using Google Adwords for improving keywords

This little trick is GOLD when it comes to optimizing your keywords.

[Google Adwords is Google’s marketing website where you can create an ad, just like the ones on Etsy.]

We’ll be using the KEYWORD tool they offer to come up with different keywords.


Go to the Google Adwords website and create an account.
You’ll need to start an ad in order to have access to their tools.

TIP: You can start an ad and then simply pause it. You don’t need to have your ad active in order to use their tools, that’s where the little hack comes in!

Under [Tools] you will find the [Keyword Planner]

Click on [Search for new keywords using a phrase, website or category]

And you’re done!


Now just type in your usual tags. For example:

Searching [Cat Cave] will give you different related keywords such as:

[Wool Cat Bed] [Felted Cat Pod] [Felt Cat House]

Apparently you need an actual website (as opposed to an Etsy shop page) to set up a Google AdWords account. I've been trying to set up an account but Google keeps telling me I need a "real URL" (or something along those lines) when I try to paste my Etsy shop URL into the account sign-up page.
But otherwise, good tips ~ thank you!

Shouldnt be the case. I used the etsy link to complete my profile. Are you using the whole link with the http and www ?

Yes, I'm using the link as copied and pasted from my Etsy shop's home page, like this: https://www.etsy.com/shop/JadeAndRubies?ref=hdr_shop_menu

Hi, so I just created an Google Adwords account using my etsy page address like this: www.etsy.com/shop/indivisibleus.

I created an ad, entered payment info, replied to the email they sent me to verify my account and then paused my ad.

To get access to my new Google Adwords account, I went to https://www.google.com/intl/en/about/products/ and scrolled down to Adwords, clicked on Get Started, Sign Up, and on top right of that screen chose the email account that I have linked to my etsy store.

That loaded my Adwords account and gave me access to Tools and Keyword Planner.

Now the reading and learning begins!

Still not working. I continue to get a message saying "Please enter a valid URL for your website"

IndivisableUS : Thanks so much for sharing! There is a way for the Etsy link to work. I haven't found out why it's not working for certain people.

As for the topic of paying with a credit card, I worked for a bank and can assure that your credit card is just as safe (if not safer) in Google's hand than Etsy's. However I do understand your point, and you can try buying a prepaid Visa or Mastercard. You can have one for as low as 15$.

Use this credit card info and you can access Google Adword!

i did this trick with adwords but I'm confused how to choose the best key words - as some are not very popular - 10k in searches but competition is =1 ; the others are very popular up to 1M searches but competition is 0.42 - which way is better ? could anyone advise me please
