Selling Patterns

I was recently gifted nearly 600 skeins of yarn (I'm grateful and quite blessed). I also received two boxes of patterns (over 100 patterns), some of them crochet.

I can't read a crochet pattern to save my life! I'm curious as to whether we're allowed to scan and sell these patterns on Etsy? I've seen other people do it but just because they're doing it doesn't mean it's legal.

Selling patterns you've scanned would be copyright infringement, so that's a no. Unless the copyright has expired, but they would have to be very old patterns.
Yes, I've seen patterns from the 70's scanned and posted here, but if the seller was caught they could be in a huge legal mess.
Heck, I've even seen people take free patterns they've found on the net and sell them online. I saw a seller once remove her illegally listed patterns when contacted by the copyright holder, only to put them right back up a few weeks later. I mean...HUH??? I think the second warning was probably a little more strongly worded, cause to this day, I don't think the seller has put them back up for sale.

What you can do is sell the actual original pattern, there is nothing wrong with that.

I figured there would definitely be some sort of infringement and, since I have yet to go through the patterns and take a good look at them and try and determine their age, I'm not sure if the copyright has expired or not (and I'm not really sure if it's worth looking into EVERY pattern to see if it's expired).

But selling the actual pattern sounds good. Hubby will be pleased to know I can open up some basement space (for more yarn!)

You're welcome. I have to go through some of my books and magazines and yarn and destash. My hubby would be happy for me to free up some space too!!

I go through my stash thinking "I should sell this" but always end up putting in back in the stash. How crazy is that?
