Advice desperately needed! (Large quantity order)

Hey guys, I need some advice. I had someone convo me for a custom order of 250 5X7 art prints of the listing below.

https://www.etsy.com/listing/109742760/the-mountains-are-calling-wall-art-85x11

I sell 5X7 prints for $10 normally, so how much do you think I should discount for a quantity of 250? Or should I drop the price all the way down to what a shop that sells postcards would charge for that many postcards (something like $1 each?) If I use the high quality paper I normally use, that would make the supply cost alone like $50, and if I made it $1 each, that would about about $300 total, which seems kind of extreme. But that's at like a 90 percent discount of what I normally would charge per print. Do you think a customer would balk at that price, or a larger price as well? Just wondering if anyone has any experience in this field. Thanks guys!

You could always ask the customer if they have a particular budget in mind. That way, if it's lower than what you'd like to charge, you may be able to come up with a creative solution to meet their needs without being short changed. Perhaps you could use a less expensive paper or charge them a one-time license fee that would allow them to have your art printed at Kinkos. Of course, if their budget is in line with what you were thinking, you're all set!

Re: Advice desperately needed! (Large quantity order)

Normally wholesale is 50% of retail. I'd be really surprised if a retailer is expecting to pay only 10%! They will be looking at your retail prices and be expecting to pay 50% or up to 70% if this is on consignment.

Generally speaking it works something like this... You need to cost the whole thing out from your supply costs: paper, ink, packaging; to time spent ordering supplies, time spent on design, time spent printing, cutting, packaging.

Cost to make x 2 + profit = wholesale price
wholesale price x 2 = retail price
Based on that, your prints should not be costing you more than $2.50 at most to make. If they are, and you want to sell wholesale, then you need to revisit your production costs and your prices.

Good luck. :)

Hi Guys,

i agree with Suzanne on this one.
you are in business to make profit.

Asking the customer about their budget will also be a good starting point.

Cheers!

I'd charge $5 each, then if they try to haggle I might go as low as $4 or 3.50 but only if I though they would be a good repeat customer. $1 is way way to low, and you don't really have any wiggle room in negotiation.

I can sell them to you for around 0.37 cents a piece if you'd like. They are printed offset on a beautiful press. Either 14 or 16pt stock with Uv coating...

No one will pay over a dollar a piece for these. This is a commercial run.

I can also do a Matte or Uncoated finish (more natural)

You should be under $150 on this for sure.
