How Has Your Etsy Experience Been?

Hey guys,

I wanted to check in with you to see how things are going with your Etsy shop. I know that we have all had different experiences with the site in terms of how long we have been on Etsy, how sales have been etc.

I thought it would be nice to share any tips, advice or pointers. As someone that is new to Etsy I am always seeking ways to enhance my shop and make build a presence within the community.

If you have any advice post your comments here!

Thanks!

Re: How Has Your Etsy Experience Been?

My experience has been pretty good so far. I've had 5 online sales so far and 3 offline, and quite a few people are interested in what I'm selling. I do have a few tips that could be useful.

- Advertise as much as possible without over doing it. Have a Facebook page, Twitter, blog, etc. for your shop and spread the word. I got a Twitter account the other day and I already have 10 followers and people who have discovered and love my work.
- Customer satifaction is key. Do whatever you can to accomidate to your customers' needs and wants regarding shipping, return policies, custom orders, etc.
- Depending on what you're selling, try to have a wide variety of items. When you advertise, make sure you are targeting those who would be interested.
- Give your customers incentives to shop with you again, like coupon codes.
- When there's a holiday, try to either sell things that have to do with the holiday or have a sale.

I think that's about it. :) I hope this helps everyone.

*Stay active in the forums and answer questions if you can.You never know who might spot your shop.

*Make treasuries or join treasury teams.Make sure to go back and reply to the featured sellers and admirers of your treasury.

Re: How Has Your Etsy Experience Been?

But how will people find your blog or twitter or facebook aside from linking them from the shop which means they have to visit the shop first. Etsy has built in traffic, an established customer base and loyal visitors. A blog or twitter from thin air would be hard for people to locate on the web, right? I have a doodle blog but I have to tell people it exists.

Re: How Has Your Etsy Experience Been?

I think a great tip is to network as much as possible and always always always have up to date business cards. My Esty sales have been increasing but still a great amount of my money is made through face to face contact. I am my best marketing tool so I wear something that I make every single day. Someone sees my jewelry and likes it, I give them a card. I encourage them to visit my online store but tell them that they can contact me for special orders or if they don't want to pay the shipping they can meet me to pick up their item.

Re: How Has Your Etsy Experience Been?

Those are all great advices y'all have given. Being a newbie I am learning a lot and reaching out to others on the various team I am on.
Like Quianna mentioned I try to wear my piece when I go out. You are and should be the best "marketer"/ salesperson for your brand. Therefore know your stuff and wear it proudly.

Ok I am new and welcome all advice. First I will answer your question. My experience so far has been pretty good. I have had three sales online and one offline since opening a little over a month ago. I have just started a blog

http://www.belindascrafts.com
and started a facebook. I am new (yup the last one on earth to the Facebook thing so not so sure how to promote on Facebook just yet. Not even sure how to list my facebook account so you can friend me.

Lily any tips on how to market via Twitter? I don't have that set up yet.

Thanks everyone for all the information.

Re: How Has Your Etsy Experience Been?

So far so good. Etsy has been a great learning experience for me in so many ways. Just visiting other people's shops is so enlightening in the talent that is here on etsy. I sell vintage jewelry but I truly learn a lot from the handmade, crafters and artist.

I agree 100% with what RacialRainbow posted.

Get your shop out there. You won't see the effects immediately but a month or so down the road (you have to be patient and persistent) google your shop and you will see the difference. ANYWHERE you are allowed (without spamming) to advertise do it! This is so, so important. We have a lot of competition and you have to fight to be seen.

Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Tumblr, EveryPlaceISell, Blogspot, Google+, Youtube, MerchantsCircle, Ning, Aimoo, Kaboodle, Yahoo, Flickr, Wists, Foursquare, OneMedia and so many more.

Please add to the list of the ones you might use. I don't do Wanelo and Pinterest. I just don't have the time to shop for others items to keep from breaking their rules.

Re: How Has Your Etsy Experience Been?

Hello all : )

So far my Etsy experience has been a rollercoaster of learning experiences... but, good nonetheless.

I started out in March of last year. I was in maybe 7 circles, about 2 teams and had about 9 items with pics that was just a Styrofoam head with my tams on them and my guitar featuring my halter tops. I made *1 sale* and that was just to a friend. She helped me out really. Made it show I was trustworthy based on her feedback.

I let it die after a few months of it turning into an input with no output (output being $).

I reopened my doors in November of last year with new designs, new inspiration and even a new name. But even more, a new outlook. I joined teams that were not only helpful, but filled with people I could find inspirational. You'd be amazed at how many established artists seem to only want to help those who are in as many if not more circles than them.(I don't want to ever be like that which is why I'm posting this <3) I took better pictures (most if not all were done with a camera phone). I rebooted my blog, Flickr and FB page and decided to make it more helpful than advertising. If I found a loop hole, I'd share it.

Since my change I have gone from 7 circles and 13 admirers to 300 odd circles and nearly 300 odd admirers. Keep in mind this wasn't always done with at home internet. This took many long bike rides to the library to accomplish...

My best advice to those who need a bit of help, is yes, circles help, teams are marvelous... study others. See not just how thay run their shops and blogs, but get inspired to see the different directions there are and see which style would work for your artistry and personality. This way when you do get a larger audience you will be ready and won't feel so lost.

Also, *Take Good Pictures*. What would look good enough to be in a treasury is good enough to get publicity for the item/your shop. Plus, sometimes people love what that pic makes them feel. Your item is the souvenir at the end of that inspiration.

Read other blogs, FB pages, team chats, etc. Write on them. Share them. Sometimes when the sharing, favouriting is reciprocated, even a wee bit of activity on your page is good. It shows someone else has been here. You're personal.

Plus, another good tip, favourite items that flatter your own work and make sure your favourite shops and items are visible. You'll be added to more circles that way and show up in activity feeds.

And lastly, after all that image work, team work, promotions... be yourself. They may come for your artwork or vintage treasures, but they'll return, because of you ; )

Wishing you all much prosperity and I really hope this helps even a little...

*Lots of light to you*

Re: How Has Your Etsy Experience Been?

I too am new to Etsy. I haven't had any sales yet, but at the same time am a bit overwhelmed with how to approach all of the networking possibilities. I have not created a twitter or fb account for my store... I just learned about treasures/treasury lists and just learned about these teams! So i'm starting to try to get out there a bit more and see what happens. This is all so new to me and have had multiple people add my candles as favorites but no sales to date.... But I'm not giving up, I just have to figure out the right formula to success! Trial and error! Best of luck!
