so in that case - how do you label?

My stuff is all fairly large and is required by law and common sense to have certain information. All of my labels are the same size but have different pictures on them depending on the style and size. Visually they are business card sized but they are foldovers . On the inside is the information I need. If there is space, I'll add other interesting stuff as well, maybe some history, animal facts on the fibre. On the back is my contact information. I use small stick on price tags which I peel off when I sell the item and stick it in my show book. The tags are tied onto the article. I am really careful to make sure that they go on the same place ( sort of goes with my hangars facing the same way and matching hardware neurosis).
We all have restrictions and requirements for our price tags so what do you do? I think this could be really helpful information as the general consensus seems to be all things should be priced.

The bowls are all priced with a sticker on the inside rim. The beaded necklaces have a small tag on a string, the ribbon necklaces aren't tagged but the hook they hang from has a string tag on them, the pins and knotted necklaces have a sign on the the rack they are on with the price. Aromatherapy items are package with a card with directions either in a cello package or organza bag with a price sticker on the package or tied to the bag string.

Most of my soaps are priced the same amount so I just use a white card listing the price. and it is attached to the soap stand. Same goes with my other products that are the same but different scents.

Re: so in that case - how do you label?

In the USA any wearables are required to have a permanent label. So I use a sew in label that has the care and fiber content on it.

I also have a hang tag that has care instructions and other information on it as well.

Pricing and labeling can be two different things. I try to ensure that all my items are priced for craft fairs. I usually use my business card and write the name of the item & price on the back of it. The card then gets tied on to the item.

Re: so in that case - how do you label?

Such a good topic - I don't have answers but as a newbie I do have questions:

1. What's a show book?

2. I've used small removable price stickers on my cards cards and journals for the last two shows.

But I'm thinking of jazzing it up a bit and adding a bit of twine around each card & journal with one of the "handcrafted with love" tags I make and stamping the back of it with my etsy shop info. Thoughts on that?

Any suggestions for pricing OOAK items? I make little sculptures and had price stickers underneath each one. I assumed folks would pick them up to check the price but I don't think anyone did. I'm thinking about making little paper tents with the price next to each one. Any suggestions?

Re: so in that case - how do you label?

I keep a show book, kind of a cross between an account book, diary, address book. So for every show, I have a record of the weather, number of people who attended ( if the organizers don't announce, I ask ), new contact addresses, orders, costs and sales plus anything else that I might think of.
I have the world's worst memory so I write down everything. I have written down things like birds nests above ( avoid that tree in future), underwear that kept slipping ( very uncomfortable if you aren't in a position to hitch it up), closest Dollar stores, food vendors I like, food vendors that I don't..
When I get home the information goes into a file for that show. and I assess it. Sometimes the information points out something new. One venue that I have done for years does better if its raining. It rains a lot in that area and a bit of wet doesn't bother people but in good weather they stay away in droves. Talking to other people has found cheap gas places, less expensive lodging, better shoes, good shows. A lot of it is the same kind of information that we all share here.
The accounts for the shows are important and thats there too.
I have to work smarter to make up for some of the shortcomings my ageing body is throwing at me and the book really helps.

I really like that show book idea! All of my items are priced with a hanging tag that matches my prim products.

I second that. What a great idea. As for my stuff. I have labels sewn into everything with care instructions, sizes, materials, but I also have hang tags with the prices.

EEK!
Luckily for me, hats are exempt (unless they're made of wool - EEK again!) I've thought about using permanent labels but I'm trying to keep my costs down. On the other hand, I don't want to be a law-breaker!

Thank goodness (from my skimming of the laws) the fiber content is not required to be on a permanent label. I use different sorts of yarn, so the idea of ordering many different labels is daunting. I think I can get away with one that says "gently hand wash" and one that says "machine wash on gentle"

Re: so in that case - how do you label?

All of my bibs have permanent labels with info required by the FDC/CPSIA like my business name, where it was made, fiber content (very very loosely based as I also sometimes use different stuff) and wash instructions.

Then I have hang tags that are really just half of a business card size (so I designed them 2-up, order them as business cards and cut them in half to use). These have my logo, "Handmade in Denver, CO", my website and pre-printed price since I only have a few price points. Saves me SO much time hand-writing! These are all attached with a price gun which you can get at any office store for about $40 or I think craft stores have them near the quilting supplies for basting and you can use coupons. Mine has lasted years and years and is the best investment! My tags never come off and I even have blank ones (no price) that I can attach for my wholesale accounts so they can put their own price/label on them. They love it!

Hope that helps!
jesi

p.s. you can get pretty reasonable printed tags on Etsy, that's where i started getting them until I needed more permanent ones and bigger quantities.

Re: so in that case - how do you label?

Since purses don't need a tag that shows fiber content, I put an iron-on label inside my bags with just my logo. Then I use one of my business cards as the price tag. I print clear labels with the hand washing guidelines that I stick to the back of the business card, punch a hole in the card and tie it to each purse. Then I write the price on the card. So when they buy my purse then go home with my business card attached to each bag.

woodsmokewoolworks ~ thanks for describing the show book - I love that idea. I always think I'm going to remember stuff and then sure enough I forget.
