gridwall alternative?

i cant find anything locally, cant afford shipping right now. so i was thinking what else could i use? the first thing that came to mind would be lattice board, with some sort of hook to hang things on. maybe just s hooks? (purses, scarves) then i thought of the wire storage cubes, just put them together all flat instead of in cubes. i'm not sure if the "real" gridwall accessories would fit on those. and with the lattice i am not sure what i would use for a waterfall faceout, for things on hangers.

ideas? thoughts?

Re: gridwall alternative?

I have wire storage cubes that I got at a garage sale for $2 that I have used in the past. I did 2 panels high and put them flat and then in a zig zag and put them to the back of my table for added height. I used paper clips unfolded into an s pattern and I hung small paintings and crosses from them. The plastic connectors are quite fragile and cannot support a lot of weight.

At Home Depot or Lowes you can buy craft wire or multi purpose wire for a few dollars that you can bend into all sorts of shapes with pliers to make hooks suitable for your display. I made my own hooks for pegboard, a shutter display and also the grid cube.

I would consider clothing racks from Walmart or Target if you need to hang stuff from hangers.

You could also check craigslist for garment racks, grid wall and storage cubes.

Depending on the weight that you want to display, you may want to simply wander around your local large garden supply store and see what they have available.

The heavy molded plastic garden lattice work comes in 10' lengths and is great for hanging things on. Its easy to transport and is fairly sturdy.

Re: gridwall alternative?

I did see a guy on Craigslist selling grid wall but he's kinda far away. I emailed him anyway we'll see what he says. Then I'll swing NY Lowe's and get either a gridwall if they have them or plastic lattice

You could also do the louvered doors and hang hooks off each slat.

If you have a local retail supply store, ask if they have used fixtures. I think I have only paid full price for two of my grid walls and I got the rest for about half off. Same with the shelves and most of my hooks. The downside to buying the hooks used is that most of them are thrown into a huge box and you have to search around for the right size!

Re: gridwall alternative?

Have you looked to see if there is a fixture supply store nearby? Quite often they will have used fixtures for sale as well as new.

Or keep an eye out for stores that are going out of business as they will often sell the fixtures as well.

Re: gridwall alternative?

I got 2 large panels from the accessories store Ardeans ( I don't know if they have them down there in the States ) for free. They were throwing them out because a couple of the little steal rods had popped off. Visually you can't tell which one till you get up really close and it doesn't affect the use of it. You could always check with places like that to see what they have...
Also when Zellers here was closing, the sold off the fixture... You might want to look for sales like that

I use the wire closet shelving (6 feet long, 1 foot wide) and stand them upright. I got it at either Lowes or Home Depot. I don't remember how much it was, but I know it was less than $10 a section. I can hang them from my canopy or sometimes I connect them together using Velcro tape as hinges and have them stand on their own.

Re: gridwall alternative?

Home improvement stores carry something called "pig wire fence" 4 x 8 foot panels. They are finished off in black. You'd bunji the top to the top of your canopy, then stake the bottom edge to the ground.

"S" hooks loop well on the thick wire. And they run $4 - $6 a panel, stacking them on top of your car or vehicle luggage rack to haul.
