What to use for tent weights???

Whay works for you?? My weights were not strong enough at my last outdoor show and we had to hold on to the tent for a good part of the time.

Re: What to use for tent weights???

I have several cinder blocks that I put on top of my tent feet. I think they weigh something like 36 pounds a leg. If I'm on grass and I am allowed I also use rope with pegs for added security. The one thing I don't like about using just the weights at the feet is that when a wind comes up the top of the tent moves quite a bit. It always makes me nervous.

Re: What to use for tent weights???

I use EZ UP sand bags on my non EZ UP tent. they work just fine and I only filled them half way. I found them at one of those biglots mark down stores or I would have never paid their retail price for them. But I have heard people use old pillow cases sewed shut which work just as well...

Re: What to use for tent weights???

I too use EZ Up sand bags which are 3/4 full. I place them on top of a 5 lb disk weight which fits snuggly around the canopy leg. I use the disks so the sand bag weights have more contact surface area beyond the leg to weight down.

This was the one we used. worked fine. we went the route of capping both ends, so we did them upside down (but the eye screw and cap on first, dig a small hole so the eye screw is situated and it can sit upright, then fill and add the bottom cap). It was very easy and pretty quick.

Re: What to use for tent weights???

oh, but make sure you mix the cement right...I assumed my husband knew what to do but he didnt...so the top part of my tube is a little crumbly. goes to show sometimes you just gotta do the heavy lifting yourself!

Re: What to use for tent weights???

We used the PVC pipe with cement in it and a big eye hook on the top end. This has always worked well for us. While they might not be the most attractive anchor they look better than the water jugs filled with water.

Re: What to use for tent weights???

We use concrete blocks on very windy days. On slightly windy days, we'll use the weights that weightlifters put on their bars.

Re: What to use for tent weights???

I've got filled PVC piping for weights.

You can see how I've got them set up here
http://www.flickr.com/photos/crochetgal/3278670951/in/set-72157620797814869
as we set up for a show in the pouring rain.

We weight the tent regardless of what the weather looks like. It only takes a minute for a storm to come up and there's not enough time to weight the tent once a storm starts.

We also make sure that all tent sides are installed on the tent when we set it up. If we don't need them, we just roll them up and hide them under the top of the canopy. But again, if a sudden storm should come up, they are already attached and ready to be dropped in a moments notice.

Re: What to use for tent weights???

I am required to have at least 25 lb weights on each leg of my tent for my fair coming up this Saturday and Sunday. I'm thinking of either doing cinder blocks and just putting the rope from the canopy of my tent underneath them for added stability if it's windy, or I was thinking of filling ice cream pails with concrete/cement and putting a washer/something like it with a ring into them so I can attach the string to that on the legs as well. Is this a silly idea? Or will it work well?

Re: What to use for tent weights???

I like the look of the bags that spry posted and bookmarked the page to purchase them later. The original plan was to make the pvc/cement weights but having one less thing to construct is so much more desirable!

that's what we use, they're pretty compact and I got them in red (cause I love red and so people notice them) and they each hold like 30lbs.. we filled them with kitty litter so I can reuse it once the outside show season is over lol! Plus the wind doesn't seem to do anything with these attached to the tent

I LOVE those ten weight discs, they're genius but really expensive and I think they may stick out more than ours do now.

michelle, I think of those two ideas the ice cream pails filled would work best. you could follow the pvc pipe instructions and just use your pails rather than pvc pipe.

Re: What to use for tent weights???

I have the sand bags from hutshop.com. I love them! My friend was using the weights from a weight set on Saturday and her tent blew over, weights and all!

Re: What to use for tent weights???

I know for my big show a month from now back home in Minnesota we are going to have the weight bags to weigh our tent down with. I think if I don't get Ice Cream Pails out here I might just buy the sand pails in the $1 Spot at Target and use them the same that I would use the Ice Cream Pails :o) I'm just worried that over night my tent will blow away because Vegas has been extremely windy lately....does anyone fully take down their tents overnight when they are doing a 2 day outdoor show? I know that seems extreme, but it's a thought I've had lol

I have these exact weights but I got them from walmart. Academy has similar weights in the store cheaper.

I have heard of people lowering their canopy for overnight and even wrapping the sides in regular old saran wrap to help stabilize it. Seriously, plastic wrap.

Re: What to use for tent weights???

here are the instructions for the pvc weights
http://www.artfairinsiders.com/forum/topics/how-to-make-weights-for-your-tent-for-less-than-30-2

They cost a little more than 30, but still cheap and heavy. I have seen some made with handles on the sides which make them much easier to carry.

Re: What to use for tent weights???

home depot sells weights for the ezup tents. $29.95 for 4. They are flat, and have a opening to hold them in place for each of the four poles. I think that is what I am going to get.

Re: What to use for tent weights???

i made the PVC weights yesterday, but when i attach them to my tent it just collapses with the weights falling in different directions. i'm tying a thin nylon rope over the top bar of the tent and through the eyehole of the weight. i have to do this by myself tomorrow, so i'm hesitant to get physical help from anyone. is it the rope? should i get a chain? or should i just sack this effort and get these ezup weights you speak of?

Re: What to use for tent weights???

We worked one show in a windy part of San Francisco where the fair organizers literally went around tying canvas bags of rocks to the tents they provided. Hey, it worked! And not having to bring a tent was awesome too.

Re: What to use for tent weights???

So I went to Home Depot looking for weights...the box of 4 they had only weighed 20lbs total...so each weight was only 5lbs...sad day.....so I decided to buy cinder blocks for each leg of my tent and I'm just going to tie the rope from the canopy top to them...is this a rookie mistake I'm making or will it work?
