Is there a simple Tablet based POS System?

I know I can get a full system from Square for <$600 but - believe it or not, despite how lucrative it is selling at shows (is there a shrug emoticon?) - that's a lot of money.
I want to be able to read bar code labels, total a purchase and print a receipt.
I don't really need a cash drawer.
I have an Asus Android tablet.

Anybody?

Oh - I should add - my trusty Royal cash register has, of late, been losing its mind, typically on Saturday Morning as a show starts.
All programming gone. The best I can do on the fly is add a sales tax rate and forego any and all inventory track or the printing of a proper receipt.
I've been carrying it for about 2 years now...anybody experience this?

Can you take it to be repaired? In my city there is a company that does register repairs as well as selling new and used cash registers. Maybe there's a similar business in your area.

I only use the Square reader not the register but in the companion app there are options to add items to inventory as well as track cash and credit card sales. I don't have every individual item listed but a broad description at each price point and then add a note to each sale if I want more details. I can then easily choose the items purchased for a quick ring up, or use the keypad to hand enter an item that I don't have listed in the app yet.

Yes - Square does do that...I'm gun shy though in that When we first got our Square Readers I spent a lot of time entering all our items only to have them disappear a few weeks later :-(
As for our cash register - It made it through this weekend without an attack of dementia. I think it might be because I was very careful to be sure it was off on it's own switch before I cut power to the booth. A voltage spike or that momentary transition from it's standby batteries to wall power might have caused the lapse.
We shall see.
