I used to have a small set of stairs for my table years ago. It was for light items, so I made it out of 1/4 inch foamboard. I cut the stringers then cut slats for the tops and fronts of the steps. Hot-glued it all together with tons of glue at every seam. then I covered it with fabric. Looked good. Didn't cost much to make, was very light to carry around and was quite sturdy. You just have to determine how deep and high you want your steps to be, then design your stringers around those measurements. The wider it is, the more stringers you will need.
