Federal tax question

What category do you list craft fair booth fees under? Other expenses? Or advertising?

Re: Federal tax question

I've always put it under rent ... because it is my "store" for the day or weekend!

Re: Federal tax question

I file a "C" form for each business I operate, etsy and my childcare. Under each there are category's for several deductions. Advertising covers a good portion of our "show business". But you can also receive 35 cents back on mileage, keep a year beginning and a year end for those miles.

IF you are filing the first time as a Indie crafts-person and you are unsure about the process H&R Block is very helpful.

Re: Federal tax question

My CPA put it under it's own category - booth fees.

Re: Federal tax question

It doesn't REALLY matter. Just pick a category that makes sense to you and make sure you only account for it under one category.

Re: Federal tax question

I'd put it under rent or booth fees (its own category). As Victoria said, just pick a category and be consistent each year. Also, keep in mind that mileage deductions can vary each year - sometimes they even change mid-year! So check the IRS site (irs.gov) for current rates. (I started my Etsy shop after I retired from my tax business. Not sure I'd recommend Block - their accuracy is kind of a hit or miss thing depending on the experience of the preparer.)

Re: Federal tax question

I put it under rent because I am renting business space for a short term (as turbotax explained it).
