I am studying for my Bachelor's, but I find it extremely easy to do both at the same time. I believe mostly because I use my shop as an example for some of my school work because I am studying business.

It's so hard because I'm running non-stop from 9-midnight pretty much every day while I'm in school... Now that it's summer I hope to make a bunch more items and get to actually marketing instead of just having my shop sit there.

Re: How do you handle college and operating your shop?

I found that it was sort of hard for me to be running my shop during the school year. I needed to update all of my items in order to make the SEO friendly, and going through each of my listings was taking a lot of time. I ended up letting a lot of my listings just expire, and I've been working on updating everything now that I'm back at home.

Once everything is updated though, I don't think that running the shop will be too hard for the coming school year. :)

Re: How do you handle college and operating your shop?

My Etsy shop was maintained on a part-time, hobby basis, which made it easier for me to balance with academics. Usually I would come onto Etsy to unwind after class or during study breaks, even for brief periods. My creating and even description writing was very cathartic for me. I knew an artistic outlet like this was only going to be good for me as it helped me to stay grounded, and gave me something extra & fun to look forward to when study periods got more intense.

If I had a big midterm or exam coming up, it was never a problem to, if necessary, put my shop on vacation mode for a day or two. I only ever had to do that a couple of times though. That's in large part because the majority of my inventory is ready to ship. Or I'd just tweak estimated turnaround times in my shop announcements.

Hope I could help!

Re: How do you handle college and operating your shop?

It's not easy..but it's fun!!

I'm getting my phd in neuroscience..so I have a lot of time I need to spend in my lab, though making jewelry (especially hammering!) is extremely rewarding and relaxing for me!!

Before I was a neuroscience student in undergrad, I was a fine arts major for a couple years (go figure..big jump! ha!), so I have always had a special place in my life for art. I used to make large sculptures and paint, but my small apt can only fit so much, so I started making jewelry for fun!

I usually make my jewelry on weekends or when i'm home early from the lab and have some spare time. Though, I am now finding that I am extremely productive in my etsy endeavors lately...even though i am defending my masters portion of my phd on friday!! eek! (Im always hyper productive when i have something coming up....anything thats not whats coming up anyway haha).

Hoping to get more things up over the summer while there are no students around, and after my defense. So nice to have a student group!

It is definitely hard to keep up with both but I try, you just have to have a balance.
