Re: Who is your Favorite Composer?

To play, or to listen to? I could play Debussy all day...his style of painting soundscapes is something that i really connect with. Also Ravel and Vaughn-Williams, both playing and listening to. Beethoven fits my fingers well, Liszt does not but i like him anyway. Chopin is one of those composers that sounds horrible if you don't know what you are doing...so i avoid him depending on the piece. :P Some of them are just stinkin' hard!
Straight listening though, i love it all. I don't go for the atonal stuff as much, preferring instead something that gives me a picture to follow. Atonal music is good in that it presents a different musical idea every time you listen to it, but it's not something i prefer to listen to. Some pieces are cut-and-dried in that you always get the same impression every time. A good piece gives you something indescribable and different every time you listen to it...something new. It speaks for itself and isn't bound up in one idea.
Oh yah - for the record, i like Bach very much. However, i could never master a fugue; so i tend to sweep him under the carpet so that nobody finds out.

Re: Who is your Favorite Composer?

Copland.
We played "The Promise of Living" from the Tender Land back in high school. For weeks whenever we played it or I heard it, I felt like my soul would fly out of my body.

I'm also a big fan of Vaughn Williams, Holst, and Granger.

Re: Who is your Favorite Composer?

Hi,

I am a retired piano teacher, but still teach the theory of music - composition, history, harmony and so on. My favourite composer is Back. He is so clever in the way he constructs his pieces. On the other hand depending on what space I am in mentally I also love composers as diverse as Mozart, Berlioz, Elgar and many more!

FYI I am part of a group of 6 who run our shop. I am the musician, but others also love music of various types from classical, to romantic, gypsy to jazz. I am excited about this team!

Re: Who is your Favorite Composer?

Me, of course! Just kidding...though I did get an awesome video of both my most recent and probably weirdest work yet (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZgclyLQ6pM).

(in no particular order) Stravinsky, Ravel, Sibelius, Schubert, Satie, Bernstein, Bach, Britten, Mussorgsky

Re: Who is your Favorite Composer?

I'm not really sure that I could just pick one.... I love choral works by Palestrina...I love to listen to pretty much anything on the Cello by just about anyone. Mahler is wonderful.... I saw my very first Puccini Opera this year and when it was over, I felt like I could die a happy woman. My favorite pieces to perform vocally are usually Romantic Era.... Schubert, Debussy....though I LOVE LOVE LOVE Clara Edwards and am learning a lot about female composers. My favorite piece that I learned this semester was from Elgar's Sea Pictures, Where Corals Lie.... You all know the list goes on and on...I could never pick just one.
