Home colour theme

Do you have a colour theme when it comes to home furnishihng and decoration?

Recently I had to buy a chest drawers and a wardrobe, I was thinking black but I ended up buying white. I think I'm ok with it, light colour makes the place brighter =]

I know some people prefer darker colours but I remember seeing a bath tub that is in a dark burgandy colour, it made the bathroom very dark. It would work in a huge bathroom though I think, a rich colour bath tub and sink would work in a spacious bathroom =]

I'm not sure about velvet curtain, it looks heavy especially if the colour is dark, it gathers dust easily and it doesn't feel clean.

Do you prefer carpet or wooden floor?

Re: Home colour theme

Wood floors, hands-down.

I'm not very good at pulling together a theme when I decorate my house, I just buy what I like and what I think goes with everything else.

In terms of color, I dislike bright and dark colors, prefer neutrals and pastels. My bedrooms are a pale lime sherbet color and the living room/hallways are painted a pale cream/ecru. The kitchen and bathrooms need to be redone but when they get painted, I'm going to paint the bathrooms one pale blue with pale blue tile and the other neutral with neutral tile.

I wish I hadn't done the trim in my place in oil-based paint. Now it's gone from cream to an ugly yellowed color and needs a repaint badly.

Re: Home colour theme

Lime sherbet and pale cream/ecru remind me of this wood sign custom order I did for a buyer some time ago, it was painted in colours of her choice. She wanted it to match her new home colour theme. Lime and cream/ecru were amongst the colours she wanted. They were not the usual colours that I would use to paint my wood items but the finished piece turned out looking pretty good.

Blue for bathroom is a good idea, I would love that.

Oh, I forgot to mention the kitchen. Haven't decided on that yet. Have plenty of time to go, with that and the bathrooms. Both need full restorations and I can't afford it now, am not going to take out a loan.

Re: Home colour theme

Frankly, I can't wait to get this stuff done. When I bought my place it was a real disaster, spent $50,000 in renovations, the place was in such bad shape. Everything in the kitchen and bathrooms is so worn and ugly looking. The bathrooms have wall to wall carpet, a real ugly color, threadbare, and in one our old cat pissed on it so many times its left a permanent stain. That's just the beginning way to describe it. One bathroom the bath has no doors, no curtain rod (I wouldn't want curtains anyway), just empty space so you can't really use the shower in there.

Re: Home colour theme

We've been repainting the whole inside of our house. Decided to go with neutrals. We are retired so the neutrals will be easier if we decide to sell. All white woodwork and with pale walls except for the kitchen. I went on line and looked up colors that designers were using. The walls are a color callled pale oak and it's a cross between pale gray and beige. They called it greige. It acctually looks really nice and people all seem to like it. Goes with any color pretty much. There's a ton of woodwork in my house so the white made it really stand out. All of our windows have solid shutters so I have no curtains or drapes. Lots of painting! It's an old Victorian and we are finally getting around to fixing it up after 20 years  of living here. It needed a lot of work so I understand, Psych. It is costly.

Re: Home colour theme

Forgot to add...I like wood floors but our house has carpeting and I can't afford to redo all the floors. I can barely afford to get them all cleaned but I am going to have to do that after we get all the painting done.

Re: Home colour theme

Seems a lot of people prefer wood floors. I suppose wood floor is easier to clean, I don't mind but I find carpet comforting, warm and soft to walk on =]

@Artbesico  I like carpet too.  To me, it's more comfortable and "homey."

Re: Home colour theme

I know what you mean. I do like to have a soft carpet or rug underfoot when I get out of bed. Wood floors can be a little cold especially at our house because we keep the thermostat set pretty low in the winter.

Some people have carpet in their bathroom too, I would prefer wood floor in bathroom and kitchen.

Re: Home colour theme

I tend to paint in neutrals then accent the rooms in bright colors.  For example my bedroom walls and furniture are all off white and cream tones, but the accents are all purple and deep lavender.  I like doing it this way because I can change the feel of the room without repainting.  Just switch out the purple accents for green, red or whatever and ta-da! -- it's a whole new room!

@psych62

Thanks.  I really do like the purple so it will be there for a while. :-)

Re: Home colour theme

@GielDesigns That's a pretty good idea, changing the colour without repainting. A different colour for a different mood and atmosphere, can do festive colours and season colours too =D

Re: Home colour theme

I live in Los Angeles so carpet is really too "hot" and with pets, more annoying to clean. Wood floors are what most people want here.
