Tips on using Media Mail

As sellers know, books can ship by USPS Media Mail, or book rate. Not all customers realize this, however, and if you offer Media Mail along with First Class, Priority and Parcel Select, then the customer may choose Media Mail for the whole shipment if he or she is ordering multiple items.

Some tips on using Media Mail:

YOU NEED TO MAKE A SEPARATE MEDIA MAIL CALCULATED SHIPPING PROFILE. You can then handle this two ways:

A. You can only have Media Mail on it.
B. You can have Media Mail and Priority Mail and Parcel Select on it.

What happens in the shopping cart if you choose option A? If a customer orders only a book, or two books, then the cart will calculate the complete order by Media Mail only. But, if the customer orders a book and a non book item, then the customer will get a highlighted message in pink to contact the seller. The shopping cart will not combine a separate Media Mail profile and a separate profile that is set up for First Class, Priority, Parcel Select, etc. The customer will have to contact the seller, or take one of the items out of his/her cart, either the book or the non book item. He or she will then need to place two different orders. Some sellers do not want a book, particularly a heavy book to ship with a breakable item. Completely understandable.

What happens in the shopping cart if you choose option B? If a customer orders a book and a non book item, then the book will be calculated as Priority or Parcel Select with the non book item. In other words, the calculator will ignore the Media Mail for the book, and the book will ship the same shipping rate as the other item or items. The drawback with this is that the shipping can be very expensive due to the weight of the book.

Either of the above options can be used, and the seller can choose which one he or she is most comfortable with.

I myself use option B........see the following post:

Re: Tips on using Media Mail

This is a post I previously posted, it explains how I handle Media Mail in this shop, and in my children's book shop, which also has a few items of vintage nursery decor. I hope you find it helpful:

**************I had a "light bulb" moment this morning regarding combining media mail, parcel select, etc.

I've gone back and enabled priority mail to my media mail listings. Both shops are now 100% CS. As the books will now be shipping priority mail if combined with a non-book item in the cart, I have added this little ditty to the needed listings:

****SPECIAL NOTE: Books ship by USPS Media Mail (book rate), which allows heavy books to ship very economically. All other items ship by USPS Priority Mail or USPS First Class Mail. If you, the customer, orders a book with a non-book item, the shopping cart will calculate USPS Priority Mail for the complete order, and this can be expensive for heavy books. You can save on shipping costs by placing two separate orders, which will allow the book to be shipped by USPS Media Mail. Your order will then come in two shipments. Please allow 2 to 9 business days for delivery with USPS Media Mail shipments, and 2 to 3 business days for USPS Priority Mail.***

If the customer reads the item description, he or she can now make a choice and I don't have to do anything........easy peasy for both of us.

I checked this out in my bookshop using a very heavy book and a child's tea set. The calculator put each item in its own USPS medium flat rate box. And the shipping really was not too bad at all. Just double on the book, it went from $6.32 Media Mail to $12.30 for a medium flat rate box. The tea set went in its own box for $12.30. A total of $24.60 for the customer, that is figured from Georgia to Oregon. For the east coast, priority mail on books is not too bad in some areas. The $12.30 above includes a $1.00 packaging fee.

This might just work out, especially around the Christmas season when customers really want that priority mail service.*****************

I hope the above is helpful to newbies beginning calculated shipping. Other sellers, please chime in with your thoughts........I have only "gotten the ball rolling."

Best wishes to all in using calculated shipping. I've used it for two months now, and still am happy with it :)

Re: Tips on using Media Mail

Ginger great job. This will help I think since this question does come up. Now we can just refer to your thread - or maybe someone will just see it when they come to the team. Thanks for doing this.

My tip NEVER EVER attach a profile with MEDIA MAIL as a shipping option to anything but a book! I know you already said that, but it bears repeating.

Re: Tips on using Media Mail

I don’t understand why Etsy can’t write it into the program to grey out the choice for media Mail if the item doesn’t qualify for it. It’s a fairly simple and common enough practice. I really don’t want multiple shipping profiles & want my customer to choose the best method for them. Just saying…

Media Mail can also apply to other items, like Records.

Re: Tips on using Media Mail

Media is very specific what you can and can't ship that way - we are just trying to get the message out to people who are attaching profiles with Media Mail to things like ceramic dishes.

Re: Tips on using Media Mail

Good morning everyone! I will finally be able to continue with my CS profiles today ( I hope) ...I forgot to ask when I was at the post office yesterday...does anyone know if "Book Pages" would be considered Media Mail? I'm currently selling packs of 200 sheets from various books. I pack them between 2 cardboard sheets then bubble wrap. Any help is appreciated! =)

Re: Tips on using Media Mail

BTW I wanted to add....some of the book pages are "advertisements" from antique clothing catalogs ... does it matter if it is indeed media?

Re: Tips on using Media Mail

Chippy - this is from the USPS website about Media Mail

Media Mail is not sealed against postal inspection. Regardless of physical closure, the mailing of articles at Media Mail prices constitutes consent by the mailer to postal inspection.

Media mail is used for certain types of books, films, manuscripts, printed music, printed test materials, sound recordings, play scripts, printed educational charts, loose-leaf pages and their binders consisting of medical information, video recordings, educational reference charts, and computer-readable media.

Re: Tips on using Media Mail

Chippy, I know magazines can not be sent MM if they have adverstisements.
Doesn't matter how old they are.

So I'm not sure if your "pages" from books would qualify or not since they include adverstisements.

From what I've been told a magazine does not qualify if it has a recent advertisement or one from 50 years ago.

Plus since these are pages out of a book, I'm not sure.
I'd probably call USPS to make sure or take them to your local PO and ask.
