How did you come up with your shop name?

Hey all,

Hope everyone's week is going well!

I am planning on opening a second Etsy shop (segmenting some of my products) and I am rubbish at thinking of business/ shop names.

Would be great to know, how did you all come up with yours?

Cassie

Re: How did you come up with your shop name?

I have the most unimaginative shop name ever. I named it after myself. 😛

Victoria Sol is my artist name though, entirely chosen by moi. Victoria I chose (and is now my legal name by deed poll) after the goddess of victory, as my given first name had the meaning of "victory" and I wanted to keep the meaning if not the name. Sol started out as a nickname after a role playing character I had looong ago, but I've kept it because I like its meaning ("sun"), especially given I'm quite dark and gothic. I likes teh dissonance.

Usually when I choose names for my projects, characters, whathaveyou, I'll pick something with meaning. Sometimes I use Latin words/names, sometimes I look up etymology and stuff. I'm particularly fond of the website behindthename.com for character names.

...Bit of a ramble, but maybe I've given you some ideas? 🙂

Ooh so fun that you get to come up with a new name!

I guess things to think about are how it represents the items your selling... Words can be very powerful and people can make all sorts of assosiations you wouldn't even expect. Think about what kind of mood you're setging, who your target market is.

I like names that aren't too literal to the product, something a bit poetic is always nice. I think there's a bit of a trend for naming after people at the moment too. Try a few combos, also it might sound silly but try writing ideas out under pictures of your items and see if they match. And then write the name away from them and see if it still makes sense.

Also most importantly make it something that's easy to remember and spell!!

Thanks both! I have been brainstorming these last few days but nothing has stuck so far. It's hard because I want it to be romantic but cool at the same time without being twee!

What I've seen some others do when they have multiple shops, is to theme the shop names. So you have Cassiopi Photography, the other one could be Cassiopi Cards/Posters/Imagery, or whatever you're planning on putting in it. That way it's instantly recognisable and one of yours and connected to this shop.

Of course, you might want them to be completely separate, in which case just ignore me. 🙂

I did think about it but then Cassiopi has proved hard for people to spell. I think I have decided on a name and it still keeps the Greek theme. Just sitting on it for a few days to make sure I really like it 🙂
