What to blog?

I know many become lost on what to blog. Here are some topics. Certainly add any topics you think are great to this discussion.

Joined a new social media platform? Blog about it. Link to it.

New listings

Other Etsy sellers or items you like on Etsy. Have an 'Etsy Wednesday' and blog about other Etsy stuff.

Bought new marketing materials? Blog it, take a picture or two and 'show' it off on your blog.

How to posts and other DIY type posts.

Bought a new tool? Blog about this tool you've been wanting so bad!

Went on a supply run or received a new shipment of beads you are excited about? Blog about them, add a picture or two. Its a teaser for new items coming! Or its just about loving those beads because you use them all the time.

Had meal a great restaurant? Blog it, add a picture, and link to the restaurant.

New pet?

Behind the scenes posts.

Having a sale or giveaway?

Bought new comfy shoes to work in while you craft, a new chair, a new table, etc? Blog it!

Something fabulous you cooked?

A buy trip?

Tips on care for what you sell or some things in general in everyday life. 'Tips Thursday'.

Bought a new sparkle dress for an event? Blog it, add a picture.

Do guest posts. Others post about a topic you add to your blog.

Other related things to your industry. Anything and everything.

These are just some topics to start this discussion. Some are 'off topic' but, this is a way to show personality and keep your blog updated with content. People do like to see the person and behind the scenes of a business. Use your blog to promote and connect with your viewers. Less is more with super personal though when you are looking to utilize blogging for business.

Blogging can be used solely for promotion and used like a website. Sell You as a business not just the products you offer. Blogging has changed, its not just about 'writing' anymore. You can make it your hub, your home base, a place to connect, and make an impression. Key is to add some other interesting topics and fun blended in with the promotion. You cant just post Etsy listing after Etsy listing if you catch my drift.

Blogs post can be short and sweet. Do not think you have to write a book for every post! Many of us, including myself suck and writing! ha ha Many do not enjoy it much either. 'Fake it'! Use spell check, use a program like office to type then copy over, a proof reader... what ever you can. Like I said before, you can keep them short and sweet. The pay off growing in the search engine and being able to connect with viewers at your own hub will be worth 'faking it'. Blogging regularly is very important to be effective. Blogging is Huge for strong SEO. HUGE. Write for your readers and the SEO falls into place naturally.

Other tips:

A good way to blog regularly is pick some time and do 5-10 posts at once if you have a busy life style. Keep them in draft mode then you can add one daily, every few days, weekly. At least weekly is best. Daily to a 2-3 times a week is really good.

Pictures are a must for keeping more engagement. Specially if you are wordy. It is OK to be wordy just break up the text with pictures. You'll keep readers much longer this way. They also dont have to be exactly relevant to the topic either. Just pretty, interesting, etc.

Link your blog posts to social media and kill two birds with one stone!

I personally have my blog dash board open all the time. If a blog post idea hits me or I come across something that would be good to blog... I make a draft post with a tile, a link, or some notes so I can come back to it later.

Re: What to blog?

As a long-time blogger, I always recommend that you think like a customer: what would YOU want to read about? Kelly rightly says "You cant just post Etsy listing after Etsy listing." That gets old really quick, which you may have discovered with Facebook.

The goal is to attract followers who like your items, want to know MORE about them. They may want tutorials (which are HUGE traffic-grabbers). They may want to know more about the thought process. They may want to know the history of whatever it is you do. For instance, if you make traditional Tunisian beads, what's the history? Do they symbolize anything? etc.

In my case, back in 2006 or so, I was starting to take my side business more seriously. I was ravenous for news of what other vintage sellers were up to. I wanted to see what they bought, hear about great shows, see what was trending, learn about displays, etc. I followed about 20-40 blogs at the time, but few truly satisfied my curiosity and desire for knowledge.

I decided my blog would be about what it's like to be a vintage dealer. I not only chronicle my adventures in finding items, I talk about my antique-mall booth. I give advice on doing so (I even co-wrote a book). I wrote a series called "estate sale secrets". I write about vintage trends, and predictions.

When I decided to start my etsy shop (at the urging of my blog readers), I wrote a series called "embracing etsy".

These thought processes have helped me. I now follow probably 200 vintage blogs and have become close friends with many of the bloggers. It's a never-ending world of amazement in what I call "blogistan"!

Think about your end goal—which cannot just be "sell more on etsy". That alone is not enough to sustain a blog. Think about what your ideal reader might want. Think about what others in your blog niche are NOT doing that you could do.

I tend to think of my blog like a magazine. I work hard to let my personality and enthusiasm shine through. Now what will your blog include?

Re: What to blog?

As vintage writes "I write about vintage trends, and predictions" this is what I mean by everything and anything related to your business. What she posted in that statement is a perfect example.

Re: What to blog?

It occurred to me that maybe we could play a little "game" to help each other? We look at each other's blogs and based on what we see and read fill in the blank:

"I'd be interested in seeing you blog about _______"
"I think you could/should blog about ______"

Things like this have helped me gain a new perspective. I think I was stuck at the very beginning with tunnel vision until an acquaintance pointed out some suggestions to me that I had not even considered in the past and I found they really clicked.

There would be no obligation to act on the suggestions of course, but we could look at it like a writing prompts exercise. Does that sound like a good idea?
