Getting started

So last month I decided to start putting stuff up for sale. I just started making things to sell and I just find myself at a loss. Most of the things I've made have been for local friends so I haven't been putting much effort into the Etsy shop but I really want to get this going. I have a few things up on the shop, but im going to be adding more this month. The thing is, I feel like I keep coming up with different ideas of what I want to sell. I love the bags I've made and I know I need to make a few premade ones and put those up. But I'm also about to start sewing some diaper covers. The pin cushions were totally random. Is this bad? Should I stick to one thing? I was thinking of making some camera strap covers too...

I know I'm rambling. I just dont really have much guidance here. And without a sence of direction I feel my motivation to get things done completely escapes me :P Help!

Re: Getting started

I think your shop should reflect your passions as an artisan. If you have a speciality (a certain item or genre), you should focus on that. People will get to know you for what you do best. That doesn't mean that your shop shouldn't have a variety of items, however.

For example, I make jewelry. My speciality is a wire weave called viking knit, so you'll see that the majority of items in my shop are made using that technique. But I've also been learning to do some other techniques, and when I'm pleased with a piece I'll list it.

Re: Getting started

I'm a new seller on Etsy so I'll tell you my opinion as a buyer.
Many times when I see other shops, I look for something specific but I end up buying what I was looking for and more. When something catches your eye it's hard not to buy.
For that reason as a seller I'm trying to have all kind of items in my shop. Why limit yourself to one product? If there's something that you think is special and it shows your talent, go for it. First I want to show buyers everything I can, then I'll focus on specific items.
Also, sometimes buyers can contact you and ask you to make a special order for them. That won't happen if they'll see only one product.

I think there all different kind of shops there... and certainly, there is room for shops with a tasteful variety of lines. So go ahead! Make sure you categorize well to make it easier for your visitors to go through your stuff.
