How To Use The Keyword Tool

I am directing people right left and centre to this keyword tool with no real guide on how to use it!!

Sorry about that!!

Here is a guide :-)

Right, so the first thing you need is a list of words about your shop. Do it on a large piece of paper with lots of space for making notes. Three ways to do this:

* Make a list from your brain or a thesaurus. (Does anyone else think a Thesaurus should be a type of dinosaur?) I like to make lists in a sort of spider diagram, but a list format will probably be best for sensible people.

* Put your Etsy address into this website: http://www.wordle.net. It will generate a big cloud of words you have used in your descriptions. This might help you make your list of words. Of you might see that you only use very specific words and not many descriptive ones. Either way, it's helpful!

* Think up ten words that describe your shop. So, for me, I might say:

cute
sweet
jewellery
colourful
rainbow
girly
fun
original
personalised
kawaii
gorgeous

That wasn't too hard. Everyone should be able to think up ten words right? Now take that list and sit in front of someone you live with/someone you just met in the street/your dad, and play the Word Association Game. You shout out a word from your list, and they shout out the first word that comes into their head.

It's a fun way to gather words!

Right, so you have a huge list now of words, at least 20, yes?

Okay, go here:

http://www.google.co.uk/sktool/#

Read what it says on the screen, because it should be offering you an updated version of the tool. For some reason, the updated link doesn't fit well with Etsy forums and I can't post it here. But it's the updated version you want.

Now, into the box, put all your words on separate lines.

Then click 'Search'

Now, scroll down a little, and you will see a list of words with their date displayed on the same line. Ignore everything but:

COMPETITION

MONTHLY SEARCHES

For this first set of words, we want competition to have around a half filled bar or LOWER.

We want monthly searches to be at least 800-1000.

Circle or highlight all the words on your list that meet this criteria.

Now, go back and try and pair up words together to make phrases. Try and pair up words that you have circled.

So, I might try Sweet Jewellery, Kawaii Cute, Gorgeous Handmade.

Keep trying all the circled words in combination with each other and 'standard' words that probably apply to most peoples shops like Gift, Handmade, Etsy, Homemade, Unique, Original.

Try and get a good selection of two and three word phrases with LOW competition (below half) and HIGH monthly searches. (This will be relative, but I would aim for around 1,000 for highly saturated markets such as jewellery/cards/supplies/knits and around 400 for niche items)

These are the words and phrases you are going to put in your shop.

Why?

Well, individually they are strong words, we know that because you circled them.

Together, they are strong phrases. We know that because you put them together.

In your titles, they give lots of scope for searches to find you.

I hope that makes it a little clearer!

Re: How To Use The Keyword Tool

That definitely helps me to know what to do. I was putting mostly just one word, which may have helped, but I'll try to do two words for a stronger phrase. Thanks!

Thanks again for all your time, how's the toothache? I used to be a receptionist in a dental office for almost 10 years, so I know about the fear factor people feel. Good luck!

Re: How To Use The Keyword Tool

It's horrendous, I can barely drink with the pain. It's spread all up the side of my head in a horrible tight headache. I've had a baby. I have five tattoos. I'm not scared of pain. I don't know why I can't just go to the dentist :-(

As a friend from etsy, I recommend you go ASAP to the dentist. The signs are all there that you have an infection and that is nothing to mess with. We all need you, please find the courage to go :) Not trying to be pushy, but have seen a lot of cases like yours through the years. Sooner is better, honest.

Re: How To Use The Keyword Tool

Thank you so much for explaining how to use the keyword tool thingy. I was messing around with it and had no idea what the heck I was doing or looking for. Thanks again for all your help with all of this, you have lots of knowledge in this area and its great your helping all of us:)

And I am the same way when it comes to the dentist. I have had a baby (a large one, with no drugs!, a tattoo, and a high pain tolerance but for some reason terrified of the dentist. I just hate someone poking around in my mouth. At the moment my tooth is not aching but it comes and goes...what's wrong with us?!

When you are at the dentist just keep thinking of all your new etsy friends surrounding you with thier love and concern and know you are not alone. Most of the time whether we realize it or not dentist fear, usually comes form a bad experience from our past whether we remember it or not.

We're with you!

Re: How To Use The Keyword Tool

Twinkly...............BINGO! I've been plugging in words and phrases for my products and hit on a GREAT niche that fits one of my products that is WAY highly more searched than the word I was using. Same end result, different name for the product. AND in the process, discovered something I used to sell that I forgot about but that people are looking for!! I will now add them to my Etsy store!! With the right keywords!! WOO HOO! (of course, i may not get sales from it..but I feel I learned something valuable and put it into practice!)

Re: How To Use The Keyword Tool

Diaper - exactly! it's such a silly think to fear I know! I had to be completely knocked out to have teeth out when I was 14 for my braces. I might go down that route :-)

Song - You'll need to take with you my two dodgy wisdom teeth, what seems to be an infection and a crubling inscisor. Ok??

song - wow!! that's amazing, I'm so happy that little old me and my silly advice was so helpful!!

You are welcome, that is what frineds are for, we are all with you in spirit.

Haven't gotten around to doing the word tool yet, been busy sewing. I can't believe the item posted on regretsy has over 2000 hits since Monday! They sure have a huge following apparently, hope to bring it over here in a good way. I have gotten a few more sales in the last day or so, but not sure if that really had anything to do with it. I am so thankful for you and all the help you gave me. I am hoping the linking will held. If regretsy has to do that stuff I am going to use them for SEO if I can, all with your help!

I joined 2 other teams at the same time I did this one and I have learned so much more from this one than the other 2 together! Can't say enough for your knowledge and help :) I usually bake cookies for nice people who help me, but that's a bit tough in this case :) and not good for your toothache :(

take care my friend.

Re: How To Use The Keyword Tool

Aaww Carol, thank you!

I think sometimes books and websites can try giving too much information - explaining why and all the details. Since I don't know any of that stuff it makes it a bit easier to explain without baffling people!
