Help! LABELING for Children's Products!

Hi All! I'm very new to the Etsy neighborhood and have a compliance/legal issue I'm hoping to get some help with... I am currently selling children's onesies & will soon be selling other blankets/ toys/ nursery decor.

From what research I have done, it seems that even if your products are handmade, children's clothing as well as toys & textiles need to have a label on them to be in compliance with the law as set forth by the Federal Trade Commission.

Now, as we all know, laws & regulations are not always plainly stated for the average person which means almost all of it looks like a foreign language to me!

Has anyone out there done this research and if so, do you currently have any quick tips/ specific guidelines on exactly what needs to go on the label?

How is clothing different from toys & textiles?

Any info on whether or not this label needs to be permanently affixed or if it can be a hanging tag?

I congratulate you on starting up a new shop. This is not an easy task as I have know as I have recently done this myself.

I see you are from the united states. The labeling in the US is very complicated and it took me a long while to figure this one out myself. Nothing like in Australia where I am from.

My advice for you would be to join a group on Etsy that specialises in care labeling for US. THis helped me greatly with trying to figure out what to put in the labels. I would consider signing up as a small batch manufacture. this way you do not have to go through flammability testing. You will however still have to go through this for toys. I know that too of the States in in US have different rules on toys and require extra licences. So take that into consideration when looking at toys. The other piece of advice would be to consider where else you could like to sell to in the future. This way you can have all your the information on your labels that are needed for this country so you do not need to change them later. I am in the process of doing this now. Not fun.
