elastic measurements

When sewing infant and children's clothing that includes elastic at the waist, leg or arm, on orders that are NOT custom, how do other sellers determine what length to
cut the elastic? Most patterns say to measure the child then add "X" amount when
cutting the elastic.

I just finished two items where I just basted the casings shut after threading in the elastic, so when someone orders the item, I can convo them to get the child's measurements, then do the final stitching.

In cases where the measurements of the child aren't available, however, has anyone found any really good size charts (not in metric!) that include average waist, ankle, thigh, wrist and other less common measurements that are not typically given on pattern envelopes? Specifically for infants and toddlers.

Thanks for responses!!

Re: elastic measurements

I use a chart online, I look up the average mesurements of children that age and then add the X amount.
