I know I can't be the only artist who has drooled over a photograph, itching to paint it but knowing it is copyrighted. I browse the commons at flickr for inspiration and have used my own photographs (I am a poor photographer and don't get out much) and photographs that friends generously let me use as reference photos. But still, there are those photographs that captivate from faraway places that I will never visit.
I wondered, if a photograph is used as a reference along with many other photographs, and the painting is not recognizable as a copy of the photo, can the photo be used?
