Working on multiple paintings at a time

Do any of you work on multiple paintings in different stages at one time. I'm not doing that presently but can see it happening in my future.

Re: Working on multiple paintings at a time

I do this constantly. Whenever I hit a wall with one painting, but still have energy I move it to something new... it's usually very effective. Although sometimes I have trouble getting back to finish older works :)

Re: Working on multiple paintings at a time

Thanks Ashley. Currently, time doesn't really permit me to do this but it's my plan to do so in the future. Working with oils often means i need to wait for a drying period before starting the next phase of a painting so i would like to use that time to start a new painting during that time and just keep multiple paintings going like that.

Re: Working on multiple paintings at a time

Hi Gloria, yes I do the same thing when I use oils... and sometimes my impatience keeps me from using them, haha.

Re: Working on multiple paintings at a time

I do! Especially if I have extra paint that's just going to go to waste if I don't. I hate wasting my oils! Although, if I'm working on multiple paintings I usually stick with smaller pieces. For the larger ones, they take all my attention and energy :)

Re: Working on multiple paintings at a time

I very seldom work on more then one painting at a time......I usually finish a painting in one setting.....some settings are very long. I paint with oil, acrylic and watercolor. Oil and watercolors are my favorite and spending more of my time on oils lately.
Welcome Gloria, very nice to have you on the team.

Re: Working on multiple paintings at a time

I always work on several pieces simultaneously. If I have a block of "painting time", I am not going to squander it waiting for paint to dry. I move onto something else.

Like Rachel, I cant waste paint on my palette either. if there is a blob of paint that's been squeezed out, I will find it a home :-)

Re: Working on multiple paintings at a time

If you do the kind of work where you put down a layer and then have to wait for it to dry before accenting it or covering over it with another layer, then obviously you do have to work on several paintings at a time!

I admire the Old Masters' style of oil painting where you paint in multiple layers, but admit that I am much too impatient to paint that way!

Re: Working on multiple paintings at a time

I don't normally... but lately I've been juggling commissions and contract work so, I haven't had any choice. Usually, I'll start a painting and if I get frustrated with it I'll shelve it and work on another. Now I have to break time up between different project deadlines. I'm working 24/7 but not enough to pay the bills with my art alone. So I have to keep the day job!

I never thought I'd be bummed out for having too much artwork to do! I haven't had a single Christmas thought pop into my head and no breaks for fun :S

Re: Working on multiple paintings at a time

That's great that you're so busy Morgan! I hope that you can make the transition soon to being a full time artist!
I had a commissioned piece of a popular painting I have so I decided to do two at the sometime for the same reason as Rachel. I hate wasting oils! Even then I still end up wasting them. I liked how it worked out but it did change my painting experience a little. I felt more like an assembly line worker than an artist. I will do it again if I have to but I really like to finish a piece then move on to another.

Re: Working on multiple paintings at a time

I'm all about alla prima
when the term is used as finishing a painting in one session
not so much the layering of paint
