Protect Your Account With These Security Tips

Hello,

We know account security has been top of mind for many of you. We appreciate the community’s dedication to keeping your accounts and the Etsy marketplace safe. We have teams and processes working year-round to help prevent fraud and keep your account secure and your partnership is imperative.

Visit the Seller Handbook and Etsy’s Help Center Article to get your account security checklist and review more tips and best practices for protecting your information online.

Read on for more details about Etsy’s support practices, and simple but crucial steps you can take to protect yourself and your business when it comes to account security:

  • Etsy Support won’t make unrequested phone calls without prior notification. If you receive an unexpected phone call from someone claiming to be Etsy Support, hang up and reach out to Etsy through the Contact Etsy Support button in the Help Center if you need help or to report the call. Don’t call phone numbers you may see circulating online, as they may not be legitimate. Phone support can only be safely requested for supported topics through Etsy’s Contact Support form.Etsy Support won’t make unrequested phone calls without prior notification. • Verify the authenticity of the message. If you receive a message or email from an individual claiming to be an Etsy employee, take a moment to examine the message closely. Look for red flags such as unusual grammar, misspellings, unnecessary urgency, or requests that seem out of the ordinary. If you're ever unsure, you can reach out directly to customer support through our Help Center. Depending on your issue, this may include 24/7 live chat, requesting a secure phone callback, or email to an agent.
  • Be cautious with requests for personal information like your email address or financial details, especially if it seems unnecessary or suspicious. Etsy will never ask you to respond directly with personal or account information via Etsy Messages, email, or social media. If we need to inform you of missing or required information, we’ll always provide an Etsy.com link or instructions on how to complete the requirements on our site, so that you don’t have to share any information as a direct response.

On-site chat support is considered a secure process as it’s initiated by the account holder. As an additional security measure, we may still ask you to verify your identity with specific account information. You may be asked to provide your full email address, but we will only require partial information on things like bank account numbers or taxpayer IDs. We do this so we can match what you tell us with what we have on file to ensure you are the legitimate account owner.

Use Etsy Payments to conduct secure transactions in a range of different payment options and currencies while benefiting from Etsy’s Purchase Protection program.

If a buyer claims they’re having trouble checking out from your shop, please direct them to contact Etsy Support so the team can review the issue they're having and provide assistance.

Tip: If a payment was already exchanged outside of Etsy Payments, immediately notify or contact your card company’s customer service department via the toll-free number on the back of your card. They should be able to assist with concerns about fraudulent transactions.

  • Avoid clicking on suspicious links or opening unknown attachments. Bad actors may try to lure you into clicking on links or opening attachments that contain malware.
  • Stay informed of common scam and phishing techniques by referring to reputable resources, talking with other sellers here in the Forums, and immediately reporting any suspicious messages or potential scam activity to Etsy’s Support team. [Please remember to keep discussions general, avoiding the disclosure of specific private and personal information such as phone numbers or email addresses, or links that may be unsafe.] Knowledge is our best defense against scammers. By staying informed and cautious, we can continue working together to keep Etsy safe and secure for all community members.

Thanks again, folks! Etsy takes the security and privacy of its users seriously. Your vigilance in safeguarding yourselves and the entire Etsy community is genuinely appreciated
