How are you pets in the cold weather??

My little pup didn't even wanna go outside today! It's a blistering 16 degrees at the moment! He has been curled up in bed all day. How are you pets holding up in the cold?

Re: How are you pets in the cold weather??

Well here in Florida it doesn't get two cold too often, although it's a pretty frosty morning today. My cats do more than all right in the cold. They stay inside all day. My dogs, however, are both short hairs, so they need sweaters and blankets when it gets chilly. They still go outside to play a bit and use the bathroom, although it's funny to see them sitting at the doggie door trying to work up the courage to jump outside!

My kitties, Wrigley and Ace, don't go outside but boy are they loving the radiator! It's 9 degrees in NY today! Tank the ferret has enough fat to keep him warm and plenty of cozy spots and my bird Jingles has hot lava running thru his veins so he's just fine lol

Re: How are you pets in the cold weather??

When it comes to the amount of fur Dominique, a.k.a. Dom the Pom, has at different times of the year, she's kinda like a chameleon - shorthaired in the hot Florida summer and very poofy (her nickname is Poofer) in the winter, even though our winters are mild.

A while back I read something about a longhaired dog's fur being a form of insulation, keeping the dog cool in the summer and warm in the winter. I never have her trimmed, partly because I love her Pomeranian fluff.

No matter how often I brush her during her twice yearly shedding periods, it seems as if 90% of her fur ends up on my honey-colored carpet, and it seems like I'm constantly picking those "Pomeranian polka dots" off the floor. It's well worth it, though, 'cause I love my furbaby!

Re: How are you pets in the cold weather??

We drag out the space heater at the first cold snap. It's our "pretend fireplace" and the animals love sitting near it. The dogs both get cold easily, but Revco gets chilly at approx. anything under 70 degrees, so he wears sweaters and hoodies and the like most of the time. Usagi gets cold but hates clothing. So she rolls herself up into little mound of blanket. The kitties are indoor only and the turtles have their own heaters. My chinchilla and degus are all warmed by their fuzz, being northern andes mountainous critters as well as being indoors. :)

Re: How are you pets in the cold weather??

My Fifa has a nickname in our home and it is the Heater Hog. Whenever the heater kicks on she goes right over and sits in front of it. We rescued her in the summer a year and a half ago and it was funny the first time it rained on our walk she hid under a tree and wouldn't budge. lol She had to get used to it living in Wa. but she definitely does not like the cold.

Re: How are you pets in the cold weather??

A couple days ago our one outside kitty was drinking water from a metal bowl, when he got his paw stuck to the pan. So we had to pour hot water over his paw and the bowl to get it unstuck. Poor kitty.
Other than that our pets are doing fine. Our dog actually likes jumping through the snow, making it fly up in the air while our kitty's inside watch. On top of that, our dog likes to eat the snow. But lately there hasn't been a lot of snow for him to play in, instead there has been freezing wind, so he stays in his dog house most of the time.

Re: How are you pets in the cold weather??

One year one of my kitties 'Kilala' was so cold in the winter that she would crawl under the blankets on the bed and sleep happily purring all day. She was used to a nice warm appartment but we had just moved into a big house. My two dogs love being wrapped in a blanket when we go somewhere in the truck, and sleep in their cozy beds a lot. My other cat Neko sleeps in her bed a lot too. My bigger dog will not go outside when it's raining, and my smaller dog won't go outside at all. I have to use pee pads. (They do not lack for fur, both Pomeranians.)
