Maybe the Free Shipping logo on sale items for 60% off are based on the original price?
You bring up an interesting point. Will sellers using the Free Shipping Eligible for orders over $35 run into problems when they run a sale?
Specifically - when the sale brings the price point to $35 & under ... will those listings all say Free Shipping rather than Free Shipping Eligible?
Yes, they are all showing as "free shipping" with the sale price under $35 due to the sale, but the price point is above the $35.
You check this out at my on sale section (https://www.etsy.com/shop/NOTONbyRaquel?section_id=1).
We also should be able to post pics here...
Yes, every listing in your sale section is under $35 for the US buyer & marked with free shipping.
That is why I commented: Why does putting something on sale which brings an item under the $35 threshold automatically change the listing to Free Shipping instead of Free Shipping Eligible?
I suspect that the Free Shipping is based on the original price ... not the sale price.
@LoveTreasuresCrafts According to Etsy support, yes. If the original listing price is over $35, it will apply free shipping regardless of sale price..... according to Etsy support, this is not a bug. They inetended to be this way..... where do we go from here?
@ThreeMagicGenies That is totally stupid "intended behavior". If someone is selling something at 60% off obviously any profit that could have gone to cover free shipping has been taken out of the item price. It should be based on the price the item is currently being offered at.
Talk about taking the incentive away for ever running a sale after going with their "free shipping model".
That being said, when I add the item to cart it then shows that I am $____ away from free shipping with this shop. That looks a bit fishy and the buyer will blame the shop for it, not Etsy (where the blame belongs).
Yes, @LoveTreasuresCrafts ... and I hope this is a bug.
Imagine a buyer putting one of these items on their shopping cart and then it shows them that they're still $$ away from getting the free shipping, but not there yet. Will they think that this is not a seller shop problem but a platform bug?
I agree. Of course a buyer will think it's a problem with a seller's shop.
In all the threads I have read about this new free shipping guarantee, I have not seen an issue brought up like yours.
You could post in bugs, but Admin won't answer there. Try calling the Etsy Seller support line or emailing them.
I'm sure most sellers would like to know the answer. Until then, many may will think twice before running a sale while participating in this new free shipping thing.
Yes I noticed this bug and posted on here 2 days ago. 2 customers actually purchased with free shipping, because I had them on sale. The base price is above $35, but the sale price is below $35. The software looks at the original price NOT the sale price to calculate free shipping. Since I saw this bug, I turned off free shipping.
They had this issue all along. I have free shipping above $75 and noticed this issue a few years ago. I asked Etsy if they can fix this problem. But instead of fixing the bug, they issued credit on free shipping incurred due to this bug whenever I report to Etsy. I got tired of chasing this issue and gave up.
i think more ppl need to ask Etsy to fix this problem. With $35 threshold and more ppl using this feature, there will be more unwarranted free shippings due to this bug. Also ask Etsy to pay for shipping incurred due to this issue. When they loose money on this, they might feel more urgent to fix the problem. Although it shouldn’t be this way.
According to admin answers during the Q & A. The question was asked and the admin said the $35 free shipping is supposed to be based on the current sale price not the original price. However we all know all these new rollouts are always glitchy.
Yes. Etsy thinks that the free shipping should be based on current sale price. However, they had this bug all along and never fixed it. Instead they gave me a refund whenever this happened and I reported. Probably there were not enough ppl reporting this bug.
sellers who plan to try out free shipping and offer sale at the same time, they need to report this issue. The more ppl report this issue, etsy team might escalate this bug to be fixed soon. Otherwise, the seller will be paying for shipping even though the item is below $35. Or ask Etsy for a refund on shipping.... who has time for that....
@ThreeMagicGenies, so this is an old bug...
Refunding us it's not a solution, so I'm going to post this in the bugs thread, if needed, everyday!
(but, I also tested it with one of my other shops and simulated a purchased, and when I was in the shopping cart page it showed above my items on the shopping cart "you're still $$ away from getting the free shipping", so, might this be half of the issue fixed?)
@NOTONbyRaquel Oh, that’s a great idea to check it out. I’m not sure how it behaved in the cart in the past, but this is an old bug. I assumed that this was a low priority bug (maybe not even on their list), 😂. Whenever I reported software bugs, they seemed to care how many ppl are affected. I just didn’t have enough time and energy to pursue this after bugging them several times.
It will be great if you can post this bug. Where is the bugs thread?
I asked Etsy help desk if they can fix this bug, since a lot more ppl will be affected. Normally they are very good getting back, but I haven’t heard from them yet. It has been several days. When it comes to this issue, it has been like a black hole.
Where do I go from here???
this is the response from Etsy support
Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding the free shipping guarantee. I can certainly address this for you.
First I can confirm that this is not a bug. This tools is intended to offer the guarantee based on the listing price of an item. Even if a percent off sale running in your shop, listings that are listed with a cost of $35 and above are automatically eligible regardless of any discounts applied.
I hope this information helps, but if you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to reply.
THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM for me as I have already been running 'multiples' sale discounts and I CANNOT afford to eat 'free shipping' based on original pricing of the item. This NEEDS to be fixed ASAP and the $35 guarantee be based on SALE PRICING. I am disabling until fixed.
I asked the question (under my other shop profile) in the new Etsy Q&A thread which was closed early with very few questions...
If a sale for an item over $35 brings it below the $35 free shipping guarantee threshold, & the free shipping is based on original price, what is the point of a sale?
@LoveTreasuresCrafts it gets complicated. If the item is $40 free shipping and you do 20% off, it will be $32 free shipping with current software. It’s like applying 2 sales. 20% off AND free shipping. In ideal case (which the current software doesn’t do), even if shipping is applied, and customer pays $32+$4, it’s still cheaper than $40.
Etsy has only one sale applied feature in their software. The current way of applying sale AND free shipping violates that.
I think the correct way is for the software to look at BOTH prices.
1. Sale price without free shipping.
2. Regular price with free shipping.
and choose the lower price for the customer. I think that would be fair for the sellers. I need to think carefully how to offer sales with this $35 free shipping, which is unavoidable during holiday season.....
But above all this, when I'm in the shopping cart page it says "you're still $$ away from the free shipping"!!!
Isn't there a way to post pics in here? 🤯
lol, i haven’t tested out. When I saw the order coming in below $35 with free shipping, I remembered the bug and turned off the free shipping guarantee right away. So I didn’t have the chance to test out like you do. Well, it didn’t occurred to me, 😂. So thank you for checking out!
you have a good point there. The software shouldn’t show the sale item below $35 as free shipping (where the customers can browse). They need to fix this along with applying free shipping based on regular price NOT sale price.
regarding cart page showing “you are $$ away from free shipping”, that seems to behave correctly. Don’t you think? Everything else.....no.
Again, if more ppl report this issue and asks Etsy to fix it, maybe they might elevate the issue? This will be a big problem. So many stores run sale.
I really don’t understand why this bug was never fixed and why there is no timeline to fix it right now. I bugged them so many times in the past (like several months continuously). They chose to give me a refund whenever this occurred instead of fixing the bug. I assumed that no one else reported the issue and gave up.
This needs to be fixed especially before the holiday season. So many sellers will be paying free shipping along with discount when their item falls below $35 when the sale is applied.
Then......is this a minor issue wrt illegality of “so called” free shipping....? 😂😅😢
I just got the same answer from Etsy that they will not fix this. This is from a different person.... arrggg....
what will happen when they ask everyone to join to do sale together.

@ThreeMagicGenies I guess we'll all have to refuse to join in their sales from now on so we don't get caught having to eat the free shipping on top of the discount.
Having to adjust pricing to account for free shipping and shipping eligible at $35 will take out any room I had to discount my items for sales anyway.
