Help identifying two cast iron objects

I have two cast iron things I'm trying to identify (I'm not an antiques expert by the way!) First one I have no idea what it is or how old. Second one is a dog shaped nutcracker, I think, but again no idea how old. Any info would be appreciated.

First of all, 2 very nice items! The first one I believe is an antique cast iron melting pot. I would date it around 1800's - 1850's. I have seen the dog nutcracker around, just make sure it is not a reproduction. Hope this helps a little. At least it gives you a place to start.

Thanks Elizabeth. Do you have any idea how old the dog nutcracker is, assuming its not a reproduction?

I posted these questions on one of the ebay discussion boards; someone said the other object could be a fire starter pot? I'm operating from a position of total ignorance here.
