Direct selling is the marketing and selling of products directly to consumers away from a fixed retail physical or online location.

A peddler, in British English pedlar, also known as a canvasser, cheapjack, monger, higler or solicitor, is a traveling vendor of goods. In England, the term was mostly used for travellers hawking goods in the countryside to small towns and villages.

Peddlers usually travelled on foot, carrying their wares, or by means of a person- or animal-drawn cart or wagon (making the peddler a hawker).

The above is a description of one who would be a seller of other maker's goods.

Yet, when the original maker, creator, or artist presents something for sale to another in a direct approach this becomes something special. An original from the handmaker, designer, and artist.

Toting a cart with all of one's products can be a very huge job and work; yet, here is an idea for you . . .

. . . use a 6" by 4" photo as a handout catelog sampler with reference to your Etsy shop's website for much more products you offer . . .

"If you would like to see some of the things I make, here are a few on this photo along with my Etsy shop website address of my full collectin of items."

What do you think?

Would you like to see an example?

Thank you,

Mike

Happy Holidays!

Wow! For the past few months, I've been thinking about becoming just that, a Peddler, a traveling vendor! Unable to tolerate the long hours of craft shows with my health issues, not to mention the special tents, displays, tables, etc., I think I can give the car a shot! Even if I could do it once or twice a week! Its one of my selling goals I have been compiling on a list for 2015. I still have to check out local regulations, license, permits for this type of selling.

The photo idea is a great idea to take along too! Much better than a biz card to spark peoples interest in our shops!

If anyone is already selling on the road, I'd love to hear your experiences!
Of course safety comes first. Thanks Mike!

May I suggest a name for this style of selling:

Incidental Selling or Informal Selling

When the conversation allows you to chat about your shop its make best sense to have a few samples at hand.

Thank you,

Mike

Maybe host an afternoon tea just to chat about what you make for Etsy without any "sales pitch" stuff. Just "Show and Tell" and when what you show and tell is desirable and listing want it then they will buy it in an informal or incidental way.

--- THE CRAFT SHOW ---

Just my experience and opinion

Holiday Craft Shows tend to be losers for the artist. Costs are high, sales at full price are low. Lots of work for next to nothing.

Not all craft shows are losers, maybe 1 in 4 or 5 work.

Count all of your time from idea creation, making, travel, and more. Divide hours into net profits to arrive at hourly wage. Don't forget to include all expenses.

With this said craft shows can help an artist understand the marketplace better; just not great most of the time for making money.

Better to create --- sample cases --- and take one with you wherever you go.

1 to 1 presentations and 1 to a few presentations

No craft show expenses --- just show and tell --- and maybe get some email addresses to newsletters with coupon codes?

During the year fund raisers for charity will likely be much better than holiday craft shows.

Thank you,

Mike
