Over the past year, we’ve been working with Etsy buyers and sellers to better understand how searching for products on Etsy can be improved. Based on their feedback, we have updated our listing categories to ensure there is a logical place for every unique item on the site. This is a comprehensive list of all the categories and sub-categories of the Etsy Marketplace.

I was researching the other day.. when you provided the Marmalead information. I do think having the same item in different categories / sub categories would provide more presence on the site. As I have referenced before... I think etsy is in the business to make money. In an effort to make money they want the sellers to have as many items in their shop as possible. With that said the more items per search page /more views. It's an investment. You wouldn't have a brick and mortar store with only ten items to sell in it. You would fill the whole store. The more the view the more they will stay in the store and perhaps purchase something,
This is only one opinion, please reply back either on this thread or one on one. I would love to hear from anyone. Listing to various view points can only help one grow.

For sure both points are likely correct . . .

Using appropriate slightly different categories may gain more exposure and more views. Whether views turn into sales in another topic.

More listings equate to more views too.

Etsy promotional ads equate to more views and the timing of these ads are most important. Best value is when ads (anywhere) are placed a few weeks before usual peaks in sales when shoppers are looking for the product.

How to check the effectiveness of a shop's titles/tags (tags . . . 1st 3 are category and next 2 sub categories)

Include 2 or 3 word tag in title and in category/sub-category; then, about 3 hours later do an Etsy search for these 2 or 3 words and if the listing shows up in page one of the results wonderful!

As a shopper I can choose to do my own keyword(s) search by using the search in the upper left corner or the search in my home page.

As a shopper I can choose to use (click on) one of the eight categories on the top and then choose the sub categories when they appear.

As a shopper I can choose to use on the bottom under "Discover and shop" search. When I use this then I find the 15 categories to choose 1 from.

Plus . . . Etsy then displays . . .

Browse more categories
Shop all items
Then a button to "see all items"

Could it be that Etsy search options are going through "evolution" with a bit of "creation" in them?

Makes me think, wonder, and be a bit confused . . . I see when search algorythm changes some sellers do better and some sellers hit the bottom in sales (from the Etsy forums comments).

What appears CONSISTENT and worth re-checking periodically is where one's listings are in categories and sub categories to make sure these are still working good.

Operating an Etsy Shop . . . very involved like a CEO of a big company but without the staff of specialists on duty to help.

Now we do now have "Filter by color" which likely replaced the fun color dots we use to have. Things are not the same on Etsy as in the past nor will they be the same in the future.

Another question for another topic (sometime) is how many shoppers will use all the filters Etsy is showing now and will Etsy be adding more and more search filters?

I think for right now my focus will be on making sure I use the appropriate category and sub categories well.

I agree! I've actually been revamping my shop... I found things that shows Etsy has changed our pictures - better clarity, better viewing, they are trying to help improve the look of our shops....

I have items that haven't been touched in a while so I am rearranging all of my tags, it is a long process but the more I clean it up and the more I add to my shop, the more attention I get.

I broke my thumb with wire... so have been absent as I've been babying it - kind of lol, Organization ... so important
