❤️ Common Sense SEO --- Titles - Tags - Search

Tags begin with categories and sub-categories

What are my potential customers looking/searching to buy?

What word(s) are my potential customers typing into Etsy search? Google search?

EXAMPLE:

Me . . . While PENDANT is my key product . . . The most used search word is NECKLACE . . .

. . . Interesting? . . . While the PENDANT is the central focus . . . Pendants most often are worn on the "neckline" . . .

Sure, a PENDANT may be used with a key ring . . .

Sure, PENDANTS, Charms, Etc. as well as other jewelry are worn/displayed on different areas of the body . . . The neck line just below a pleasant smile continues to be a great area to display jewelry that makes a statement!

Enough for now . . . Next post by me will be about most searched for necklace sub categories . . .

What category word(s) are most searched for your product(s)?

Thank you,

Mike

Re: ❤️ Common Sense SEO --- Titles - Tags - Search

Thank you Margareta . . .

Somewhere within all of us we have what is known as "common sense" and "the common sense approach" . . .

Here's what can happen when we leave out the "common sense" about SEO . . . ME: NECKLACES is a sub-category and JEWELRY is the prime-category

Etsy has 8 Categories for us to post our listings in and here they are:

Clothing & Accessories
Jewelry
Craft Supplies & Tools
Weddings
Entertainment
Home & Living
Kids & Baby
Vintage

Back to my primary product . . . actually I might choose . . .

Clothing & Accessories and then "Keychains & Lanyards" as my first sub-category.

Then again I might choose . . .

Jewelry and then "Necklaces"

Or, I might choose . . .

Craft Supplies & Tools and then "Jewelry & Beading" (if I were to offer a supply?)

Or, I might choose . . .

Weddings and then "Jewelry"

Or, I might choose . . .

Home & Living and then "Arts & Collectibles" maybe?

Or, I might choose . . .

Vintage and then "Jewelry" (if part of what I make is vintage?)

Thus, "Common Sense" will be a help in choosing the best category and sub-category too.

Then give some consideration about STATS as to where most of my views come from . . .

Thank you Lisa Lynn . . .

Besides my Etsy shop, locally I do small business consulting (businesses with 5,000 or fewer employees; most have cash flow issues . . . which is the biggest reason businessses go out of business . . . a business can be profitable, yet not able to have adequate cash/money to pay current bills/expenses) . . . AND, the 2 always questions that need the business' best answer are:

1. Who are the business' customers?
2. What are they looking to buy?

3. How are they looking to buy what they are looking to buy online? In other words, what are they typing into search? Do they search by Google? Do they search by Etsy?

Be an Amazon customer and use Google and just after you look at a product on Amazon note how many times you see it advertised when you do Google searches . . .

What is important to keep in mind is that we are all online shoppers and we all have minds . . .

"The human mind is more capable of thinking than a computer the size of the Empire State Building in NYC; yet, a computer can never originate a single thought." --- quote by many authorities in differing words.

Common sense is not how fast we think it is more about how well we think about things.

Thank you,

Mike

Print it out and try using it; adjust it for what works best for you . . .

Think of "Etsy Search" and "Etsy Category/SubCategory Search" like your potential shoppers would . . .

Thank you,

Mike

Re: ❤️ Common Sense SEO --- Titles - Tags - Search

Cheyne Little Jan 12, 2017 - wrote "Improving Etsy Search in 2017" which is now in our Etsy Sellers' Handbook . . .

https://www.etsy.com/seller-handbook/article/improving-etsy-search-in-2017/85413432226

Get the scoop on search enhancements we'll be working on this year, and how your shop can benefit from them.

COMMON SENSE: Search remains a vital part of the Etsy experience for both buyers and sellers. It helps buyers find the items they’re looking for in our diverse marketplace. In fact, nearly half of all visiting members make at least one search on Etsy each month. As a result, optimizing items for search continues to be a key part of running a successful business on Etsy. When you're successful, we're successful.

" . . . nearly half of all visiting members make at least one search on Etsy each month . . . "

IN OTHER WORDS, about half (50%) of our views from shoppers comes through an Etsy Search! And, this means as far as SEO goes "Etsy Search" is our most important area for us all to understand well and make it work for us the best that we can!

. . . . .

Because search is so vital, we're committed to making continued improvements to the experience in 2017. Last year, we acquired Blackbird Technologies, a company with proprietary machine learning technology that will help us create a more relevant and personalized search experience for shoppers. In addition to integrating more of Blackbird’s technology into Etsy search this year, we’re dedicating more resources than ever to improving the search experience.

https://investors.etsy.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=253952&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=2204526

Throughout the year, we’ll provide updates on these improvements and tips for making the most of them in your shop. Meanwhile, here’s a sneak peek at our main focus areas:

Helping buyers find the right items - Better tools for sellers

We’ll work on a broad range of projects to make it easier for buyers to find what they’re looking for, including getting them started with the right search terms and helping them navigate their results in meaningful ways.

• We’ll create better and easier ways for you to convey specific information about your items so that buyers can find them when searching on Etsy.

• We’ll also use the information you provide as building blocks to create new ways for buyers to filter and explore their search results.

• Regular adjustments to the core ranking algorithm will continue to be part of our work to maintain accurate and relevant results.

What to Expect

Creating a great search experience is an ongoing process, and testing out different approaches is crucial to helping us achieve our goal of connecting buyers with the right items. As we perform tests during the year, you might notice some adjustments to your search experience.

In order to ensure accurate results, we won’t announce individual tests. We'll continue to update you when we make any permanent changes to search and suggest any additional actions you can take to improve your placement in relevant search results. As an Etsy seller, you are an integral partner in helping us build the optimal search experience.

PLEASE BOOKMARK THIS LINK SINCE IT WILL BE UPDATED OFTEN IN 2017:

How Etsy Search Works

https://www.etsy.com/help/article/34234144469

🎁 How Does Etsy Search Work? 🎁

When a member searches for an item on Etsy, Etsy’s search algorithm works to return the most relevant matches. Details of this algorithm change regularly so we can help buyers find what they're looking for.

[ME: Etsy's search algorithm and relevant matches is ever changing . . . this is why we best keep informed about what is happening here since 50% of our shoppers are at risk. This also applies to Google searches which have different algorithms.]

Sellers control the most important factors in Etsy Search placement.

[ME: This is key and it is our key, like the key to our shop's front and side doors. Common Sense thinking is needed on this.]

Please read on to learn what Etsy Search looks for, and what you can do to help improve how buyers find your shop.

🎁 Factors in Etsy’s Search Placement 🎁

The following factors combine to determine which items appear and the order (or placement) in which those items are displayed. Keep in mind that these factors are not equally weighted to determine the order of the results.

[ME: Yes, understand these factors are not equally weighted; yet, we must do a little common sense guessing on how the weighting applies?]

🎁 Tag and Title Relevancy 🎁 THIS IS OF HIGH IMPORTANCE FOR SURE!

First, every item in the results must match the buyer’s search word or phrase. Items that do not match a buyer’s search won’t be included in results.

[ME: What the shopper types in every word and every character is used to produce the result . . . which is where we want our listings to be!]

For example, the search “banana backpack” will only return items that match both “banana” and “backpack” in either the listing tags or titles.

[note: "banana backpack" is not the same as "banana + backpack" . . . more above this later]

Once the search algorithm finds all of the items that match the search, we also use keywords to determine the order of those results.

[KEYWORDS determine the order of these results; and, we want our listing to appear first or nearly first?]

• Exact phrase matches are stronger than matches on individual words. For example, a search for “banana backpack” would return all items with the words “banana” and “backpack” in the tags or title, but items with “banana backpack” in the title would be considered a closer match.

[Yes, the TITLE is considered a closer match.]

• If a word or phrase in a buyer’s search appears in both the title and tags of a listing, the search algorithm considers that listing more relevant than a listing with that word or phrase in the tags or title alone.

[WOW: word/phrase in both title/tags is what the search algorithm finds more relevant!]

• Words at the beginning of titles are considered more important than words at the end.

[Guess what? What is first is more important; common sense.]

🎁 Listing Quality 🎁

In an effort to show items that buyers are likely to purchase, Etsy’s search algorithm also considers how well individual items tend to do in search. We call this “listing quality.”

[Let's see here? "how well individual items tend to do in search" = "listing quality."]

If a buyer clicks, favorites, or purchases an item after they’ve seen it in search results, that action contributes to the listing’s quality score.

[IMPORTANT AND VALUABLE . . . Getting the shopper to click on the listing! On several of my listings I have an arrow pointing to "ZOOM" with a note "Click to Zoom" in the first listing photo to get the shopper to make this important first engagement click!]

Since listings at the top of results tend to receive more buyer attention than those at the bottom, Etsy’s search algorithm adjusts for the expected buyer behavior for these different locations.

[Expected buyer/shopper behavior . . . give this some common sense thinking too!]

Note: New shops and listings have a neutral quality score, which has no impact on placement.

🎁 Customer & Marketplace Experience 🎁

We want buyers to have a great experience when they purchase from a seller on Etsy. Because of this, we consider a shop’s record of customer service and whether it’s in good standing according to Etsy’s policies.

[IMPORTANT to common sense thinking here!]

Great reviews, completed About section, and completed shop policies can all help your placement in search. Using the shop policies template will also slightly improve your placement (FAQs and seller details are not factored). However, recent cases and past intellectual property infringement issues can have a negative effect. New shops have a neutral score, which has no impact on placement.

[IMPORTANT . . . with the exception of FAQs and seller details the quality of the seller's reputation is vital! Yet, perhaps clarifying FAQs and seller details may become more relevant in 2017? We will wait and see.]

🎁 Recency 🎁

To keep search results fresh for frequent shoppers, Etsy’s search algorithm reviews how recently an item was listed or relisted.

[For a later common sense study it will be good to do some common sense thinking about "recency of listing/relisting" . . . ]

🎁 Shop Location 🎁

Many buyers in certain countries, like the UK, Australia, France, and Germany, have told us that they like purchasing from sellers based in their own countries because they find it to be more convenient and less expensive.

[SHIPPING TIME AND SHIPPING COST AND SHIPPING DELIVERY . . . from my research shipping from the USA to other countries via USPS International and other carriers is more expensive than shipping into the USA; yet, International shipping is always significantly higher than domestic (same country) shipping.]

In order to make local items slightly more prominent in search results in these specific countries, we take the location of the shop and the shopper into account. Searches made within other countries do not take shop location into account for search results.

🎁 Shop Diversity 🎁

Buyers on Etsy are looking to explore a marketplace of unique items. In order to meet this expectation, Etsy’s search algorithm works to show results from a variety of shops, when available.

[ME: from my study I find without using promotional ads that only 1 listing per shop per page in results for the most part.]

🎁 Improving the Search Factors in Your Shop 🎁

The steps you take in listing your items and maintaining your shop are the most important factors in getting your items found through search on Etsy.

• Read about choosing the best titles for your items here.

https://www.etsy.com/help/article/188

🎁 Encourage Shopper Interaction 🎁

• List your items with clear item photographs that invite a closer look.

[ME: 1st listing photo is most important for shopper engagement!]

• Use the cropping tool so your item thumbnail is correctly formatted.

• Price can be a factor in whether a shopper clicks on your item. Avoid pricing items too low or too high for your target shopper. If you'd like to get more advice on how to price your items, see the article How to Price Like a Pro.

🎁 Provide a Positive Customer Experience 🎁

Taking these steps will help ensure that your customers have a positive experience and are encouraged to leave a great review.

[Reviews will be reviewed at a later time.]

• Complete your shipping profiles to accurately represent processing times to your buyers. Be sure to mark orders as shipped to help buyers know when to expect their items.

[ME: The sale is not complete until the buyer has the item and is satified.]

• Make sure your About section is complete. Read more about telling your story.

• Fill out your shop policies and use the template to give buyers helpful information about your shop.

https://www.etsy.com/help/article/38745785811

• Take steps to communicate with past buyers and swiftly resolve open cases.

[ME: Be more proactive in your communication by talking 100% responsibility when both sending and receiving messages!]

This article has more tips for providing great customer service.

🎁 Active Marketing 🎁

"Active Marketing" is all about doing the above well and being proactive in continously impoving too!

Mike

Common Sense?

If appropriate could posting some of your listings in different categories help get shoppers to your shop?

Re: ❤️ Common Sense SEO --- Titles - Tags - Search

Thank you for sharing Margareta . . . I am not sure this is what is meant regarding shop location? Yet, Shipping Cost, Time in Shipping, and Delivery Safety can be a disadvantage. Restating this sectin from above:

🎁 Shop Location 🎁

[SHIPPING TIME AND SHIPPING COST AND SHIPPING DELIVERY . . . from my research shipping from the USA to other countries via USPS International and other carriers is more expensive than shipping into the USA; yet, International shipping is always significantly higher than domestic (same country) shipping.]

For me to ship a package no more than 3 ounces from the USA, California, to Sweden will cost me $13.50 and shows for delivery time "Expected Delivery Date Varies by destination"

For me to ship a package no more than 3 ounces within the USA address will cost me $2.61 (plus Delivery Confirmation to bring to $3.50).

$13.50 less $3.50 = $10.00 more

$13.50/$3.50 = 385%

Current Pendant Only Price (on sale) $11.95

USA Shipping Cost $3.95 is 33% of product cost.
Sweden Shipping Cost $13.50 is 113% of product cost.

Note these are the new 2017 USPS prices in the USA . . .

. . . . .

Now, Etsy's statement:

"In order to make local items slightly more prominent in search results in these specific countries, we take the location of the shop and the shopper into account. Searches made within other countries do not take shop location into account for search results."

I am not clear in my understanding of this statement, especially "In order to make local items slightly more prominent in search results in these specific countries, we take the location of the shop and the shopper into account." ? ? ?

It seems to me Etsy is stating that if I were in the UK that items sold in the UK will be more promenient to me?

When I search for category "Jewelry" and sub-category "Necklace" and sub-category "Monogram & Name Necklaces" I find in the left column:

Shop Location

Anywhere
United States
Choose a custom location

I am guessing that in Sweden I would find:

Anywhere
Sweden
Choose a custom location

Etsy's statement: "Many buyers in certain countries, like the UK, Australia, France, and Germany, have told us that they like purchasing from sellers based in their own countries because they find it to be more convenient and less expensive."

"certain countries" does not list all of the certain countries; just gives an example of UK, Australia, France, and Germany . . .

When I search USPS Internation rates to UK for 3 ounces I also find $13.50. Australia is $13.75. France is $13.50. Germany is $13.50.

Perhaps someone can calculate the difference from shipping their product from a non-USA country to their country and also to the USA to see how these costs are? Thank you.

🎁 7 Key Takeaways from the 2017 Etsy Search Updates 🎁

(source: https://marmalead.com/blog/key-takeaways-2017-etsy-search-updates/undefined/blog/key-takeaways-2017-...

Etsy has just released an article which details plans for the 2017 Etsy search updates. Last year they acquired Blackbird Technologies – a machine learning company. The purchase caused a bit of a stir in the Etsy community and spawned countless questions and even more conjecture. But now we finally have some details about Etsy’s plans. Here are 7 key takeaways from the announcement:

1. Etsy and its sellers are a team

Right off the bat, Etsy makes a point of reminding sellers that when they are successful, Etsy is successful. Etsy knows that search updates and algorithm updates can cause stress for sellers and they want to help minimize that by reminding sellers that Etsy’s success depends on seller success. Etsy says:

“ . . . As a result, optimizing items for search continues to be a KEY PART OF RUNNING A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS ON ETSY. When you’re successful, we’re successful . . . “

2. Watch for search bar updates

Etsy breaks their 2017 search focus areas into two groups: helping buyers find the right items and building better tools for sellers. The first way they plan to help shoppers is by “getting them started with the right search terms.” This is almost certainly a reference to their search bar suggestions which they’ve been providing shoppers for quite a while. As shoppers type in the search bar, Etsy provides suggestions from a pool of other recent search terms. In order to help shoppers get started, they will undoubtedly be providing more personalized search term suggestions right within the search bar to help each shopper begin with the best possible search term for them. Etsy says:

“ . . . Helping buyers find the right items --- We’ll work on a broad range of projects to make it easier for buyers to find what they’re looking for, including GETTING THEM STARTED WITH THE RIGHT SEARCH TERMS and helping them navigate their results in meaningful ways . . . “

3. Changes to the search results page

The next thing Etsy plans to do for buyers is to help them “navigate their results in meaningful ways.” This could partially be referring to new filter options for shoppers which Etsy covers later in the article. But this likely includes other changes as well. There are vast possibilities but this could include things like quick product views on the search results page to pull key listing information further forward. This could also include features like “suggested listings” based on the search term and personalized browsing history. Etsy says:

“ . . . Helping buyers find the right items --- We’ll work on a broad range of projects to make it easier for buyers to find what they’re looking for, including getting them started with the right search terms and helping them NAVIGATE THEIR RESULTS IN MEANINGFUL WAYS . . . “

4. More specific ways to describe listings

As part of their list of updates for sellers, Etsy announced that they will be providing new ways for sellers to “convey specific information” about listings. This will likely be tied to some of the upcoming search filter updates. This will allow sellers to fill in information which helps to differentiate their listings from others. Etsy says:

“ . . . Better tools for sellers --- * We’ll create better and easier ways for you to CONVEY SPECIFIC INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR ITEMS so that buyers can find them when searching on Etsy. * We’ll also use the information you provide as building blocks to create new ways for buyers to filter and explore their search results. * Regular adjustments to the core ranking algorithm will continue to be part of our work to maintain accurate and relevant results . . . “

5. New search filters

Etsy announces new search filters in 2017. Currently, shoppers can filter by category, location, handmade/vintage, price, color, and ordering options. New ways to filter results could include things like seller rating, downloadable/handmade/vintage, size, and item quantity. Some sellers are even hoping for the ability to filter by items with coupon codes or those which are on sale. Etsy says:

“ . . * Regular adjustments to the core ranking algorithm will continue to be part of our work to maintain accurate and relevant results . . . “

6. Don’t freak out

Again, Etsy is sensitive to the apprehension that surrounds any updates to the flow that helps customers find products. They remind sellers that they’ll keep them up to date as changes are made and will be sure to provide actions that sellers can take to make sure their shops are in the best possible standing. Etsy says:

“ . . . In order to ensure accurate results, we won’t announce individual tests. WE’LL CONTINUE TO UPDATE YOU WHEN WE MAKE ANY PERMANENT CHANGES TO SEARCH AND SUGGEST ANY ADDITONAL ACTIONS YOU CAN TAKE TO IMPROVE YOUR PLACEMENT IN RELEVANT SEARCH RESULTS. As an Etsy seller, you are an integral partner in help us build the optimal search experience. . . . “

7. Did I mention Etsy and sellers are a team?

Just as they opened the article, Etsy closes it with a reminder how important their relationship with sellers is. The last thing they want to do is completely turn the system upside down that is working for so many sellers. Changes will be slow and careful and deliberate. Keep an eye out for updates, make the necessary changes to your shops and everything will be fine. Etsy says:

“ . . . In order to ensure accurate results, we won’t announce individual tests. We’ll continue to update you when we make any permanent changes to search and suggest any additional actions you can take to improve your placement in relevant search results. As an Etsy seller, YOU ARE AN INTEGRAL PARTNER IN HELPING US BUILD THE OPTIMAL SEARCH EXPERIENCE. . . . . “
So what does this mean for the future of Etsy Search and Etsy SEO?

As Etsy begins to take advantage of the specialties of Blackbird Technologies, they’re looking to deliver a more personalized and intuitive search experience for shoppers. So what does this mean for SEO strategies? The core components that affect rank aren’t likely to change anytime soon. Etsy will still draw from listings’ tiles, tags, and recency. The majority of the changes are around HOW shoppers will get to those results pages and how they will navigate them. There will be other factors that Etsy introduces which will affect rank but the core algorithm is unlikely to drastically change. What does this mean for you as a seller? Sit tight and keep doing what you know works until Etsy announces changes. There is no need to jump the gun and start guessing how to update your listings for changes that may or may not happen.

What does this mean for Marmalead?

Marmalead’s algorithms measure engagement with search terms. Etsy is changing how they help shoppers find the right search term. So measuring which keywords they arrive at and which keywords enjoy the best engagement is still just as important as it used to be. In fact, with the crippling of Google’s Keyword Planner and Etsy’s planned changes to the search bar suggestions, Marmalead is becoming even more valuable to sellers as the best Etsy SEO solution available.

For the latest interpretations of Etsy SEO and search updates, subscribe to the Marmalead Blog.

www.Marmalead.com does have a part that is free for your use . . .

. . . . .

[ME: Conclusion . . . Etsy will decide what they do or don't do with regards to the Etsy Search Function . . . WE HAVE VERY LITTLE CONTROL OF THIS . . . ONLY OUR INPUT WHEN WE CAN . . . my suggestion is that we acknowledge this and focus our engergies on doing our best to adapt to these changes because this is the best we can do.]

Thank you,

Mike

Re: ❤️ Common Sense SEO --- Titles - Tags - Search

❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ARTICLE ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ Will false hearts make Etsy search break up with you? ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

The question, "if an item gets a lot of views and hearts and doesn't sell it will lose relevancy in Etsy search?" has been asked many times in many ways.

The answer? It depends.

❤️ Background

There's a lot of noise in the how does Etsy search work space. Maybe you've heard of click parties aka clickathons. In case you haven't, they're based on the false belief that random views and favorites on your listings will increase your search ranking. Clickathons are a waste of time for so many reasons they deserve their own post.

On the other hand we have the shops that are very worried about getting non-buyer clicks and favorites for fear that it will sink their search ranking.

This topic is entirely about how Etsy's search handles listings.

❤️ Search and Non-Search Traffic

Etsy distinguishes between views that come from search and ones that don't. They get really granular, but for our purposes they either come from search or they don't.

Views that don't come from search are just whatever. We all get random visitors to our sites so it's expected that the quality of view will differ.

Search results however are prime real estate. We've all seen it and Etsy has stated they incorporate performance (sometimes called listing quality) in search ranking. They take the listings that do a great job of being relevant (Etsy SEO), and they give them a shot at great rankings. If the listings perform well, they stay up there. If they don't, they give other listings a chance. Etsy wants to present shoppers with listings they're likely to purchase. The best way to predict that is whether others searched for this and ended up purchasing.

❤️ When does it matter?

So back to the original question. Does it hurt listings to favorite them and not buy?

It doesn't matter when the view comes from outside of Etsy's search.

It does matter when the view comes from within Etsy's search.

If many people find your listing in search, view it, favorite it, and NOT buy it. Eventually, yeah it will hurt the listing. It establishes a track record of shoppers passing up that listing despite finding it in a relevant search. Etsy wants to display listings with the greatest chance of selling. The key there is that the traffic is coming from search.

❤️ Conclusion

I certainly wouldn't ask a group of people to search "xyz keyword", find your listings, and favorite them just for fun. The result would be totally not fun.

I wouldn't worry about casually liking something. I would continue to promote your shop everywhere that gets you in front of shoppers. Business cards, packaging inserts customers can give to friends, and online communities where your customers want to hear from you to name a few.

The best thing that can happen to your shop is to consistently get found in search and close the sale. You make money, Etsy makes money, shopper is happy, win win win.

Thank you Marmalead for this article of interest!
