DAY 10: Planning for Pictures OR Pitching Bloggers

If you are not satisfied with your photography, today you will set a day for re-shooting pictures and make a list of everything you’ll need. Are you going to plan a professional shoot? Are you going to take the pictures yourself? Will you need new equipment, light box, camera, etc.? Write everything down and plan to make it happen by your shoot date. If you can swing it, go with a professional shoot! You’d be surprised how much you can accomplish with a couple hundred bucks!

Photography tips: https://blog.etsy.com/en/2011/etsy-success-product-photography-for-beginners/

If you are satisfied with your pictures, today you will submit to three bloggers. Now that you know your target market, determine what blogs they read. For example, I sell to pregnant women, so I Googled “Pregnancy Blog”. The very first one that came up, I submitted to. I first made sure the blog was a good fit for my product. Then I looked at her advertising information for any clues into what they accepted and didn’t. Then I sent an email. A simple and to the point email complimenting her blog and telling her what I sell and why her customers would benefit from it. I offered to send her a sample for review. That’s it! Do that 3 times today. Aim high. Look for blogs with social media followers in 50,000 plus arena. Unique monthly visitors to the blog of 250,000 plus.

Tips for approaching blogs: https://blog.etsy.com/en/2013/top-5-tips-for-getting-press/
(The only tip I don’t follow here is the one that tells you to follow-up with the blogger if you don’t hear back. I don’t agree. I say one email, and that’s it. If they don’t respond, they just are not that into you. Leave them alone, pitch another.)

Re: DAY 10

Question: - when we say "pitch a bloggre" do we expect that. of the blogger like s the shop. he/she will do review / interview for free? Or is it still 'sponsoring" ie we have to pay something and at least provide an item for the giveaway?

I clearly do not have much experience in this

Re: DAY 10

Pitching a blogger for a review usually entails you sending them a free sample/giveaway. Paying any sort of money would be a sponsorship/advertising.

Re: DAY 10

Right, thanks Amanda - makes sense: the idea is not to advertise but get them to review ! Once i am done with my pictures and list more staff i will need to seriously look into this

Re: DAY 10

My day 10 consisted of reviewing my photos. I know the ones I took when I opened my shop in 2012 all need to be redone so I will be starting with those first.

I also started putting a blurb on my packing lists asking my customers to post their event photos on my Facebook page. This has worked on 2 occasions and the brides were gracious enough to let me use the photos for my storefront as well.

Re: DAY 10

I did not submit to three blogs yet because I spent my time searching for blogs that seemed appropriate. Baby steps...

Re: DAY 10

I pitched 7 blogs today!! Got on a roll, and couldn't stop :-) ... Funny because when I realized what I was supposed to do today, I almost got a mini panic attack, but once I started, I got all excited at the possibilities, and it was way easier than I expected... Not all had the highest readerships, but the quality was there, and I even saved more blogs to hit a few more next week...

Re: DAY 10

That is awesome! Keep at it and don't get discouraged if you hear nothing back at first. I have submitted to soooo many. I hear back from probably 10%. It only takes one good one to really push your business into the next level!

Re: DAY 10

I've got my daughter researching blogs for my LGBT jewelry. I'm not sure about the other target markets I identified, but I will need to find blogs that will wait until my hand is fully functional before they post. I would hate to miss out on the opportunity because I couldn't fill orders. I figure that gives me time to make a decent list and I'll submit to more than three since I must wait.

7 blogs?! Way to go!

Re: DAY 10

WildTravels - 7 blogs, that's amazing!!

Amanda, congrats on hearing back!!

I finally did this task - kind of. I submitted to one blog and then pitched two B&M shops. Definitely planning to pitch to blogs and shops more regularly. Need to put it on the to-do list.
