Q&A with Etsy Staff: Social Media
Hello, Etsy Sellers!
With the holidays quickly approaching, we wanted to bring the Etsy Social Media team into this space to share tips and best practices around social media marketing.
Do you have questions about social media platforms, attracting new followers, or creating effective content? Maybe you’re curious about making social videos, or how to increase your chance of being featured on Etsy’s different social media channels? Our experts from Etsy’s Social team are here to help!
Here’s how it will work:
- Share your questions for Etsy’s Social team by replying to this post from now until Friday, October 1st. We will close the thread to questions at 4pm ET that day.
- Etsy staff from the Social team will answer as many questions as possible by 5pm ET on Friday, October 8th.
- Because we will not be able to answer every single question, be sure to read through what others have asked before posting your own. If your question has already been asked, give it a Like! We want to ensure that we answer the questions that matter most to you, so we’ll prioritize answering questions with the most Likes.
And a housekeeping note:
- This Q&A is to address questions about Social Media. Please remember that all comments should remain on topic and in line with our community policies. Any comments that violate our policies will be removed.
Thanks all. We're looking forward to your questions!

·4 years agoHi, How to be featured by Etsy on social media and get Etsy to pick badge?
cgbytryc
Thanks for your interest in being featured! For tips on how to potentially get featured, take a look at this article from the Seller Handbook.
We’d recommend following and engaging with our social channels, since our team often discovers new sellers through engagements on our profiles. Note that at times our team will also be seeking out specific items to feature based on seasonality. For example, with the holidays approaching, we’ll be looking to feature personalized items that make great gifts or festive product categories like ornaments. Making sure that your shop offerings feel relevant to the current season never hurts, and could also appeal to customers onsite!
Thanks again for reaching out!

·4 years agoThanks. I have a question. Should I use tiktok to marketing my items?
Hummusbirrd
·4 years agoHi Juliette! Thanks for the question. It’s a great idea to be on multiple social media platforms, and TikTok specifically is an excellent way to reach a wide audience with your products and process. I’d definitely recommend experimenting there—not just as a way to show off products, but also to take your audience behind the scenes and give them an exclusive look into your life as a small business owner. Good luck with it!

We’re always looking for new ways that we can educate sellers on creating great social media experiences and providing tips on using social media for their small businesses. In the meantime, be sure to check out some of the resources that Pinterest provides to small businesses with Pinterest Academy! With Pinterest Academy, you can take courses on utilizing Pinterest to help reach more potential customers for your small business. We’ll also let our educational content team know that there is interest in additional social media education.

AdorableCraftWonder
Hello there! TikTok is a great place for content discovery, so if you’re looking to capture more potential customers on the platform, engage with content creators by commenting on their posts or trying out a Stitch or Duet with their content. You may also want to increase how often you’re publishing on the platform, at least for the first few weeks, you should be posting content at least once a day and then at least 3x a week. The more you use these social media platforms, the more likely your content will be served to people looking for items like yours. Good luck!

·4 years agoI would love to use social media, BUT!!! I DO NOT even know where or how to start? So it would be great if you can keep us limited social media people in mind when writing the articles in mind. Some of us have to start from square one especially on Pinterest.
cgbytryc
We completely understand being less familiar with social media! If you’re just getting started, we’d recommend setting up one or two profiles on different platforms and just testing to determine what types of content will work best for your business. One of the beautiful things about social media is that it’s all about testing and learning—and using those learnings to guide future content creation!

I can't see my listings on pinterest unless my someone else pin them. For that that I have to play pinterest game.
How can I see my items on piterest if I post it on my own.
Thanks
HBstudioco
·4 years agoHi @StylishStoneJewelry! A great way to curate your presence on Pinterest is to create boards. Then, pin content that links to your Etsy shop in each board so you’ll be able to see all of your items. If you’re using the tool within Etsy to pin items, that’s helpful in getting attention on new items in your shop. Here are some tips from Pinterest on how to make pins.

Hi there! Social hashtags help with content discovery and should be chosen based on what each post is about! Hello there! We recommend setting up a business account for both Facebook and Instagram. By setting up a business account you’ll have access to additional features that will make it easier for you to promote your business. Once you have your business manager set up, you can either connect your business account to your Etsy shop (there are a lot of tutorials on how to set this up on YouTube) or you can add a link to your shop in your Instagram bio or Facebook About section. For more information on setting up your social accounts you can always check out our Ultimate Guide to Social Media Marketing.

·4 years agoWhich platform is the most effective to drive sales?
AdorableCraftWonder
Hello @VintageEphemeraShop! This is a great question, it all depends on who your target audience is and how much time you spend on social media. We’ve seen sellers who have great success with Pinterest for items related to weddings or home and living since Pinterest is a planning platform and people save items or browse for inspiration. We’ve also seen people drive traffic and sales through their TikTok channels because they showcased a unique or even lower cost item that appealed to a younger audience. Social media isn’t a one size fits all platform, so what works for one seller may not work for you.

I keep getting notifications that we need to confirm our website and catalog, otherwise, we will lose access to Instagram's shopping features. Is it possible to continue linking back to our Etsy shop? We don't have a standalone website.
ClaudiaEmd
Thanks for your question @Labelicious, you can still link your Etsy shop to your Facebook accounts, you'll need to set up your catalog in the back end of Facebook (you can find tutorials on how to do this on YouTube) and then you'll need to follow these instructions to claim your domain on Etsy

However, Instagram is still saying that we are unable to have access to the shop features unless we link our "own" standalone website. This is a new notification and feature that apparently just came about as of October 1st, 2021.

·4 years agoThanks for your question, @Resurrection89! Each platform is different so your strategy should differ on each. For example, pins have a longer life span, so pin seasonally-relevant content that will appear in searches, DIY tips, and ways to use your items. Since you sell apparel, you could try pinning a series of outfits ideas that feature your items to inspire followers.

·4 years agoHello, This is my 1st holiday season. I expect to know more tips about optimizing shops (title, tags, hashtag, description..)when running Ads. I run paid advertising with most of matching tags (eRank searched), then I got some favorited items back but it’s very hard to turn into orders. Could you please advice
Besides, I'm wondering that How to use tags and hashtags for more effective and relevant? How long shall I update them, weekly or every two weeks?
Thank you
jessicakertis
Hi @MeiraLinen! It’s great to hear that you’re already planning for the holiday season! For general tips on shop optimization and listings tags/titles, I’d suggest visiting our Seller Handbook: https://www.etsy.com/seller-handbook
We also recently updated our Ultimate Guide to Holiday, where you’ll find tons of guidance for the season ahead: https://www.etsy.com/seller-handbook/article/the-ultimate-guide-to-holiday/925258811224
When it comes to adding hashtags to your social media posts, we’ve found on our posts that using 5-7 hashtags per post is the optimal number to help increase visibility. I’d suggest using the Explore tab in the Instagram app to research tags that might be relevant to your products and brand.

·4 years agoIs there a simpler way for my Instagram followers and guests to directly purchase an item I post that is in my etsy shop without having to go to my link in bio, then sign into etsy, and then go back and search for the item in my shop? Something like a direct link in the post to my etsy listing?
Hummusbirrd
·4 years agoHi! I totally understand the frustration here. One thing you can do is set up a link-in-bio gallery tool. There are a few companies that allow you to create these with little to no cost. Your followers will still have to go through your link in bio, but this way they can go directly to the listing featured in each post. You can also connect your Etsy product catalog to your Instagram account through Instagram shopping, which will allow followers to get to your listings directly from the Instagram posts themselves. This can be a bit more complicated to set up, but there are lots of tutorials on YouTube that should be able to help you out. Best of luck and thanks so much for the question!

·4 years agoHello @Donstep The best thing to keep in mind on Facebook is that if you stay on your own page and only post to your current audience, no one new will find you. ·4 years agoHow do I best change items favourited to items ordered.
BroochesIsland
·4 years agoHello, I have a question about promotion on Etsy. It is unclear by what parameters Etsy promotes the product. The keywords are selected correctly, but there are very few impressions. I was trained on Etsy, it is recommended to add 3-5 listings every day during the training, but manual work is not mass production. I work in my store every day, but so far there is very little result. Paid advertising didn't help. How else to increase impressions and why Etsy shows more often listings of stores that have a lot of sales. I understand that they bring profit to Etsy, but it turns out that new stores take away the chances to sell their products. My store https://www.etsy.com/shop/BroochesIsland?ref=seller-platform-mcnav
AdorableCraftWonder
Hello @BroochesIsland! This is a great question and one that we hear a lot from our sellers. While there is no magic solution that works for everyone, we have seen that sellers that have active social media presences can drive more traffic back to their sites. Also did you know after using Etsy’s social media tool to promote their shop, sellers got more orders and made more in sales than they did before using the tool. (Based on an analysis of sellers who posted via the tool from May 2020 to May 2021, sellers got 23% more orders and made 21% more in sales when comparing the 90 days before using the social media tool to the 90 days after first sharing via the tool.). This could also help increase your exposure on social channels and potentially get some additional views on your listings.

·4 years agoHow to used LISTING HASTAG for more effective? Mean for more relevant?
cgbytryc
Thank you for participating in our Q&A!
How you use Etsy product tags and social media hashtags is completely different! On Etsy, we recommend your product tags be more straightforward descriptors of the item you’re selling so that they reflect how buyers would search for that item. You can add up to 15 product tags to your listings. On social media, hashtags help with content discovery and should be chosen based on what the post is about. When picking hashtags, we’d recommend doing some research to figure out what others are sharing on the platform and which tags are most popular. On our posts, we've found that using 5-7 hashtags is optimal.

Hi there @JeetGallery! Right now we don’t have the functionality to automatically pull in your items to your social media feeds. We’re continuing to look for ways to make social media content creation easier for our sellers so thank you for the suggestion.

·4 years agoI love watching Reels on IG and I've made a few of my own with increasing success. For me, Reels are incredibly fun to make and they add a fun new facet and perspective to my shop. The trouble is the time it takes to make them. I could easily spend a couple of hours creating the perfect video when I have plenty of other work to do in my shop! Any advice to make this process less time consuming, but still interesting to the viewer?
Hummusbirrd
·4 years agoLove this question! I’m a content creator myself, so I totally feel you on how time-consuming it can be to create videos. One time-saving tip that I personally use is to knock out a bunch of reels in one day. I pick a day when I’m feeling high-energy—and when there’s great natural light—set up my tripod, and get to work. This way, I have a bunch of content ready to go, and I don’t have to think about it until it’s time for the next batch. I also try to remind myself that videos don’t always have to be *perfect*. As long as I’m 85% happy with a video, that’s good enough for me. Another thing you can do is encourage customers who have bought from you to include the product in videos that you can then repurpose (with their permission) on your own channels. Hope this is helpful!

·4 years agoHow do you share multiple pictures to FB/IG via the Etsy Social Media section?
jessicakertis
Hi there @MaggiesWoodWorks! Glad to hear you’ve tried out Etsy’s social media tool! Right now, it’s only possible to share one image at a time through the social media tool. If you’re interested in creating a carousel post with multiple images on Instagram, I’d suggest first saving the relevant images to the camera roll on your phone. You’ll then be able to select multiple images at once when creating a post from the Instagram app. If you’d like to schedule multiple posts at once, you could look into using a free scheduling tool like Later or Facebook’s Creator Studio. Hope that helps!

Thanks for your question @CrowsNestArtDesign! Social media is a great way to gain additional exposure to your shop and your items, there are also tools that allow you to use social media without a smartphone such as Facebook’s Creator Studio and scheduling tools like Hootsuite or Later. Another way to get more shop visits is to take a look at your tags and titles for your items and learn more about how Etsy search works. ·4 years agoHi Social team!
1. What social media is the best to promote my products on Etsy?
2. What kind of videos now is the most viewing?
cgbytryc
Hello, @FromGranny2u! Thank you for your questions. Which social media platforms you use depends on what your goals are! Our team focuses on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Twitter and Pinterest. If you create products that look great in photos and videos, Instagram and Facebook would be beneficial to lean into. If you love being on camera or are able to show off your products in interesting ways through video, TikTok could be a good channel for you to explore. If you want to build a dedicated fan base, Twitter is great for establishing more direct connections with followers. If you’re hoping to inspire customers to envision how your products might fit into their lives, give Pinterest a shot. In terms of video, we’ve recently seen success using Instagram reels and TikTok! The format is similar, so you could even test some of the same videos across both platforms to see what works best for you.

·4 years agoI want to link my Facebook page, but i got error
how i done this
AstridPaperandHome
·4 years agoHi @JaipurArtMart2015 Thank you for posting about this! There are two places to connect Etsy and Facebook. One is for connecting your Facebook Profile to your Etsy account, and the other is for connecting your Facebook business Page to your Etsy shop. Be sure you’re connecting in the right place. You can’t connect your Facebook Profile to your Etsy shop.
Before connecting, try signing out of Facebook in the same browser. This will help ensure you don’t connect to the wrong account.
To connect your Facebook personal Profile to your Etsy account, go to your > Account settings.
To connect your Facebook business Page to your Etsy shop, go to Shop Manager > Settings > Info & Appearance.
If nothing happens when you click to connect, your browser may be blocking pop-up windows. Check your browser's settings to disable this feature or temporarily allow the pop-up window from Etsy. If that doesn’t help, it could also be a browser issue.
Hope this helps!

·4 years agoHi Team Can you tell me about video ratios for android phones as I have been trying to make social media videos but find a lot of the screen is cut of when posted to mobile or used in an insta reel. Cheers Jules
AdorableCraftWonder
Hello @JulesNatureArtist! The aspect ratio for full screen social media video is 9:16 and the Android tends to have a slightly larger size (between 9:18 and 9:21), there are a couple of solutions to this. You can film your content directly in the app you’re publishing to like Instagram or TikTok - this will make your aspect ratio match the platform specs. You can also edit your videos in a mobile video editing app like Premier Rush or similar video editing software, here you’ll be able to crop the video to ensure that it’s the proper size for social media. Another tip is when you’re shooting your video, try to keep most of the action in the middle of your screen, that way, when you crop your video, you won’t worry about losing any details when the size gets cropped.
