Investing in Sellers with Etsy-funded Coupons
We’re excited to share that we’ve just launched our latest campaign to support Sellers.
On June 22, Etsy is offering a targeted set of buyers 20% off their next purchase with a unique promo code for two days only.
Best part? This offer is fully funded by Etsy at no cost to you–just one of the ways we're keeping our promise of financially contributing to your growth.
In 2021 alone, we sent Etsy Coupons (fully funded by us!) to more than 18 million buyers and invested over $1.3 million in discounts. We also made it easier for you to offer coupons with improvements to our Sales & Coupons tool so you can help turn browsers into buyers and bring buyers back.
We are big believers in discount strategy as a way to build loyalty and we want to create more discounts that support your business. What types of promos excite your buyers?

Just how loyal a shopper and store keeper here for over 12 years does one need to be to get such a coupon?
I HAVE gotten them from ebay TONS of times- but nothing ever from here. Wonder how you choose your potential buyers?

·4 years agoThis is still ongoing. I received the offer last night. 20% off a $40 purchase, with a $25 maximum. So far, I don't see that anyone has used the coupon in my shop, even through the first time this was offered.

·4 years agoI got the offer yesterday and immediately made purchases from two different shops and got 20% off from each by Etsy. So of course I think it's a great idea by Etsy. I was surprised because I'm a shop owner BUT I'm also a frequent Etsy buyer so perhaps the targeted ones are ones who buy frequently? I suppose we'll never know as Etsy has the right to choose whichever ones they send the e-mail to, My favorite part about it, aside from getting 20% off (which is always nice) is that it's for ANY shops...while it's also nice to receive coupons from shops you purchase from, I, as a buyer, don't always want something else from a shop I just. purchased from (at least not soon!) plus I love the variety offered to all buyers by the multitude of shops available.

·4 years agoI had a customer purchase something from me using one of those coupons and I did receive my full price(minus all the fees Etsy takes normally). I'm not quite sure how I do feel about it all anyway. They are offering discounts on our items using the money that they are getting from increasing our fees to make another sale that they can still take their higher percentage off again. Yes I get how it helps increase sales, but I would just rather a lower fee rate and let customers buy when they want it. In the long run, I will probably come out with more money for my work. Also as others mentioned, offering discounts trains the buyers to put stuff on their list or in their cart to buy when they receive a coupon. I am a patient person who won't buy something right away unless I need it, So if I see something I know I will need in the future, I'll favorite it and put it in my cart and see if I get the automatic discount offer to checkout my cart. The only reason I do that is because Etsy has gotten me used to getting that around 50% of the time. If I didn't, I would end up buying it at some point, and the seller would end up with more profit. Anyway, that's just my 2 cents.

Personally I don't click anything through an email. If there is a code, you can enter it when you check out. However, this deal was offered for 2 days only, according to Admin's OP. I hope it will still be applicable to you.
Good Luck; hope this helps.

·4 years agoHello was so startled to have 3 sales in a few hours with the Etsy coupon. I have 3 sales running in 3 sections of my shop with different percentages The one with 30% had the sales which meant the customer received about 50% offwhile the Etsy offer did not cost me I am feeling concerned that customers will just wait for the biggest discounts possible and not shop without them.
The 3 items were already 30% off
I offered the sales cuz of a sudden slump after a good sales period.
Kind of shocking to see a customer got almost 50% off
it was my first sale at 30% off
Am I glad or sad?

·4 years agoThis offer is fully funded by Etsy at no cost to you Since etsy is funding this out of fees and not out of money they make on other investments, it is costing me. This is coming out of the fees etsy just raised and may or may not benefit my shop if someone who uses it picks an item from another shop. Why not just be totally honest about something for a change and not look for a way to tell me picking my pocket isn't going to cost me anything?

·4 years agoSelling on Etsy used to be the cheapest option compared to what's other platforms offered but now Etsy is also similar to other platforms so this giving back to us is greatly appreciated and doesn't make us feel bad for all the hard work we put in and not seeing much return at the end of the year. Thank you!

·4 years agoI just got the offer 20% off, says best part is that sellers will receive the full price, just one of the ways Etsy is helping small businesses grow. So it does say that Etsy is funding the sale.
BirdsongEmporium
·4 years agoJust ugh! I agree with others that resorting to constant discounts just cheapens a brand. Why pay full price if you know you can wait and pay less? I hope this is just a one time thing and is not the sign of what is to come with a push to do this like the push for free shipping.
FunkyJunkyVintage
·4 years agoAs a consumer/buyer I shop regularly on a few online sites but I absolutely DETEST it when I receive those, "ENDS TONIGHT!" or "TWO DAYS ONLY! DON'T MISS OUT" type emails, especially right after I've purchased something.
I have to plan out and budget for anything I buy, I feel that it's a slap in the face when I get those "Hurry up!" coupons. I'm sure etsy's banking on impulse purchases, like we've read from a few above, but I hate the rush, rush, rush offers. And then I resent that company because it's not much in the way of a loyalty reward if I feel like I missed out doubly because I just don't happen to have any wiggle room in my budget in that company's chosen window of reward.
I guess they must work since etsy knows best, right?
But don't make it like it's a big favor to me or expect to receive any falling on my knees gratitude that this is a wise choice of spending those fee increases. Why oh why can't you, etsy, invest in this site and make it better instead of putting bandaids over the bullet holes from things that are not working and instead showering us with cockamamie products like a 2-day coupon?
dayspringcollectible
·4 years agoYes, I detest offers like this as well.
Ebay often will offer higher Ebay Bucks offers for only 3 days. I almost always seem to get the offer right AFTER I've just spent a large amount of money on supplies. So the only thing their offer does is make me resent that I bought anything.
PristinityJewelry
·4 years agoWhat if, I THE SELLER, and OWNER of the item, do not want my item sold at a discount? It is not a image I care to create.
dayspringcollectible
·4 years ago@PristinityJewelry
Then in typical Etsy fashion, Etsy thumbs its nose at you and tells you tough luck. They think they know better than you how your shop should be run. While I don't personally have a problem with this since discounts are the norm in vintage selling (but not done by all vintage sellers), this is another thing that should be an opt-in program, rather than a forced-in one as Etsy is so well-known to do.
PristinityJewelry
·4 years ago"...We are big believers in discount strategy as a way to build loyalty..."
I'm sorry, but that is a very, very bad idea. VERY poor strategy. Particularly for a site like Etsy purports itself to be. I sincerely hope such promotions don't continue.
Resorting to simply discounting to jump start sales, represents a lack of creativity in promoting. And it trains customers to expect or always wait for a discount. Soon enough it becomes difficult to sell anything at regular price.
It becomes an unprofitable race to the bottom. A race dominated and won by resellers of 'crap', that have the margins to play with.
This has the feel of a poorly thought out, and rushed move, to try and bump up sales figures a bit, before closing out the 2nd quarter (sales totals).
leinweberstudio
·4 years agoI agree with everything you say.
Contrary to what "they" believe, it does not build brand loyalty. As a matter of fact, these bargain hunters will abandon you and rush to the next place that offers them even better discounts.
And it does train shoppers to always expect a sale/discount. A salesclerk at Dillard's once told me that almost no one buys anything there at regular price. So, what once was a respected brand is now thought of as sort of a bargain hunter's paradise.
You're right, it's bad, bad, bad, no matter how you look at it.
ETA, this part of your comment This has the feel of a poorly thought out, and rushed move,... well that's pretty much standard procedure here for far too many things.

·4 years agoI think people have been trained to put something in their shopping cart & wait for the emailed coupon to finish checking out. I get tons of those emails from vendors I purchase supplies from off Etsy too.
leinweberstudio
·4 years agoI think people have been trained to put something in their shopping cart & wait for the emailed coupon to finish checking out.
Well, that'll be a long wait for some, won't it!
And I get those email coupons too, but when I get a coupon from Harbor Freight, or Office Depot, it is from those companies. They don't have some other entity stepping in to send them on their behalf, and perhaps against their wishes.
When Etsy hands out coupons it is not for their own merchandise but ours. What if we don't want coupons associated with our stuff?
They constantly overstep the boundaries of landlord/tenant relations.
AuntSusansCloset

StainedGlassYourWay
·4 years agoIt's great as long as it is CRYSTAL CLEAR that Etsy is offering the discount and not my shop. I believe discounts just serve to undervalue an artists' work, and train customers to wait for a lower price, which is why I never offer discounts myself. They make sense for supply shops or other types of businesses, but not mine.
Curiotorium
·4 years agoHmmm...just had a customer use an "Etsy Coupon" and it did affect my profit for that item per the receipt. Just how will that be made up to me?
YarnShop4U
·4 years agoWhere are you seeing the error in your profit/fees? I ran the numbers for an Etsy promoted 20% coupon and the fees I paid and money I received is spot on.
$12.99 item + $3.97 shipping +/- $1.04 tax =
$18 order total
$0.79 processing fee
$0.84 transaction fee/goods
$0.26 transaction fee/shipping
Obviously I don't keep the $1.04 paid in tax but there is a processing fee on it so it's added in as part of the total collected then taken out and shown as a minus on the payment account.

·4 years agoOh this is exciting! Thank you so very much! I'd love a little more flexibility in the coupon and discount section. Being able to run sales specific to my shop sections woudl be amazing. For example, I'd love to run a sale in one of my shop sections that has lower cost items in it and offer a buy 2 get one free or buy 2 get one 50% off. That would encourage more items sold, help me decrease my inventory in sections that have a lot of listings and it would give my buyers a nice savings. I just cant do this sitewide. Some of my items are upwards of $60 each. But having this option available would be a huge benefit in my shop sections with lower cost items. Thanks for your consideration. I always appreciate your interest in what sellers have to say.

·4 years agoI'm one of your targeted buyers who received a coupon. Thank you! I immediately treated myself to something that's been sitting in my cart. I'm sure the shop was happy to get the cha-ching and I'm happy to get the discount.
For anyone wondering, I received it because I've opted-in to receiving Etsy marketing emails (it specifically says this at the bottom of the email). I'm sure that's what they meant when they said they're offering it to a targeted set of buyers.
leinweberstudio
·4 years agoI don't think it's a good idea to train our customers to expect discounts. I'm not a tire shop, buy 3 get 1 free. I have no wish to send coupons.
Although, the other e-site does this as well, 15% off everything, I think 2 or 3 times a year, but they make it site-wide, not aimed at only some buyers. I've never used it as a buyer.
A final thought: constant couponing and discounts diminish a brand. There are many major retailers who would have lots to say about that.

MirageRiverCreations
·4 years agoThe other e-site hasn’t done this in a long while; I’m on there everyday. After “the year that shall go down in infamy” the other e-site cut off almost all money saving offers and rewards. Now the only discount you might receive is if the seller sends YOU a best offer (a concept I’ve tried but am not impressed with) or the seller accepts a best offer from you. That’s pretty much it, because they learned they could really live without rewarding buyers and they make more money in the process.

·4 years agoSounds great. Except now we have to deal with customer inquiries about the coupon code, when we'll have another coupon, why it won't work, yada yada yada. We sell as low as we can and don't offer coupons or "free shipping".
Fortunately it says it's targeted at the buyers and not at individual shops. So that's great for some buyers; as a shop don't expect me to follow suit.

·4 years agoIs this a precursor to a requirement? I ask because Etsy also funded free shipping prior to making it a quasi-requirement. Will making coupons available to buyers affect product placement (now or in the future) in the same way free shipping did? Are these coupons made available to buyers in all categories and what were the criteria used to select those buyers? I truly hope Etsy doesn’t ask buyers if they like coupons and base their decision to offer coupons - or ask us to do so - based solely on that. It would be the “free” (not free) shipping fiasco all over again. After all, who would say no to that? If this becomes another of Etsy’s “strong recommendations”, sellers will have to increase their fees….again. So, if it becomes a “do it or you’re buried in search” scenario, I’d be honestly skeptical that it’s not simply another way for Etsy to make more money and that it would be minimally in support of sellers. Sorry. I’d be more impressed if support was more readily available.
dayspringcollectible
·4 years agoThere's a lot of mistrust in Etsy wrapped up in this response...well deserved. Those of us who have been around a while, however, know that the details and motives of everything Etsy does need to be put under scrutiny. Etsy ideas that look good on the surface often turn into booby traps for sellers.
And yes, Etsy's primary concern right now should be fixing customer support, specifically getting 24/7 IN-PERSON phone support for sellers, especially with all the mistakes Etsy is making with sellers' shops and listings. Customer support is a farce.
VivianJoel
