Etsy Insights: your shop’s unique selling proposition
Hey there!
My name is Amy and I’m a shop optimization specialist here at Etsy. This week I’m back to talk more about branding. In my last post I touched on how defining your brand identity can help attract new customers and set your business apart from the competition.
Today I’d like to talk about how to zero in on what is unique to your brand—the singular detail that gives your shop an advantage over your competition—and how to maximize it by identifying a unique selling proposition, or USP.
A unique selling proposition is a statement that succinctly sums up what makes your shop different. It’s the one thing that consistently appeals to your target customers: a specific benefit that highlights your strengths and makes your shop or products uniquely valuable. Your USP could be related to the types of materials you use, your style, even the level of customer service you deliver.
For example, if you sell handmade furniture, maybe your USP is determined by the type of natural wood you use. Or, if you sell vintage décor, your USP may be that you have the widest selection of mid century pieces.
While every USP is different, here are some tips and questions to ask yourself when identifying yours:
Make a list of all the unique features and benefits that your products or shop offers
- What are my unique skills or core values?
- What problem am I solving for my customers?
- What expert or specialized knowledge do I have?
- What do I do better than people selling similar items?
- What do other people, including my customers, say I do well?
- What kinds of products do customers frequently purchase from my shop?
Research the competition and look for opportunities where you can position your brand in a new or different way
- What could I do that isn’t being done?
- Are there trends I could be tapping into using my unique skills?
- Are there new or related products that could benefit my business?
Reflect on how your unique qualities and how they fulfill your customer's needs
- Are there any customer needs that haven’t been fulfilled?
- Are there problems that you solve that your competitors can’t?
Looking at the answers you’ve compiled, identify your most compelling unique selling point and think about how to apply it within your business. Ideally it will inform all of your branding and marketing decisions to really reinforce the idea with your customers.
As you’re brainstorming, it might be helpful to jot down your ideas in the following format:
Every experience with (business name) conveys (unique selling proposition and key values) to my customers.
Remember, with your USP you’re looking for a space in the market where you can stake your claim. A USP is more than a slogan–it’s ultimately how you position your products to set them apart from the competition.
What makes your brand unique? Comment below! Or if you’re already working on your USP, share a draft below.

·4 years agoI have reviewed my USP several time over the many years I have been creative. Photos are an issue and always has been since I started online in 1999 - how much of an impact that has I have not determined since sales still happen. When reviewing my latest USP (2015) it involved knowing my various skill sets and what I could most likely do or gain as a few skill sets to release some independence of others. I had the knowledge I could sculpt after dabbling with it a few years back using polymer clay and seeing if I can pass some "grade" to know if this new skill set was any good. I won a 1st place blue ribbon, as an amateur, at the local fair exhibit on my second sculpting attempt. Knowing all this is important to the question about my current USP self review. I am a traditional artist and began only making art work for print reproduction on products, since the pet portrait market is saturated - Printed products did very well before the market became saturated. I have been hand painting ceramics for over 16 years and offering custom painting in this form until the economy collapse in 2008ish (now I do not get as much as I use to for this service). Now days I just paint figurines occasionally. To overcome the saturated market and thus the heavy competition I put all my skill sets together to create an item that is unique in its own way. Novelty mugs are not unique but since I am devoted to creating correct colors and not follow the common elements (namely wording) on the vessel area, it become unique in its own right. USP, in my opinion, should really be thought through and never limit oneself to just one entire skill set. And really review the product(s) up against the market place. Also ask yourself are you staying with trends and/or are you a trends creator? Are you keeping yourself in a box? Or are you an explorer?

·4 years agoThanks, I'll try...
What are my unique skills or core values? - I just love to sculpt.
What problem am I solving for my customers? - Mmm?.. Lack of inspiration, boredom?..
What expert or specialized knowledge do I have? - No-no-no, I'm not a professional, just a handmaker.
What do I do better than people selling similar items? - Nothing. Others are real artists, I admire their art.
What do other people, including my customers, say I do well? - No, my modesty doesn't allow... Ugh, I'm a bad seller, ahaha!
What kinds of products do customers frequently purchase from my shop? - Different. Well, the goods are quite the same type - doll faces or faces for decor, a few sets of doll parts - hands, feet, heads.
What could I do that isn’t being done? - I could spend more time promoting the shop, but I don't want to. I just wanna sculpt, sculpt, sculpt.
Are there trends I could be tapping into using my unique skills? - What?.. The question is unclear, but I'm thinking about returning to ceramics. Polymer clay is a very comfortable, easy-to-handle material, but I miss real clay.
Are there new or related products that could benefit my business? - Ceramic tiles - as an element for decoration. Such tiny flat ceramic tiles.
Are there any customer needs that haven’t been fulfilled? - I do not know. My customers are such nice, delicate people that I'm afraid they won't tell me about it(
Are there problems that you solve that your competitors can’t? - I don't feel competition on Etsy. The doll faces of other Etsians are beautiful, I can only admire and envy other people's talents
It's probably hopeless...

·5 years agoI found this post and thought how interesting. Like so many of the more business oriented help topics I always struggle a little here. As with many of the replies I read on this thread it sounds like some of us creatives find putting our creative output into 'marketable' words pretty tough (at least I do without finding I've rolled into hyperbole and cliche). I guess that's why the big guns have their marketing teams to do this aspect of their business. Anyway, I did have a look at what I had put into my shop when I first opened it and thought - yes, this is still valid. So, I think my USP is "Making jewellery Bold and Fun". I realise so many others are doing just that but somehow, my love of colour, my love of jewellery (of ALL kinds), my skills in beading and my particular taste must make something a little different. If not entirely unique. I would love it if anyone had a moment to look at my shop and offer any further suggestions. Happy to do the same in return. I'm pretty sure there isn't anyone else out there doing exactly what I do. Just not sure what exactly it is I 'am' doing though. Hard to nail it down. Happy explorations.

·5 years agoHey everybody
we just startet our business and shop and in case of our style of art work we are still experimenting. But our USP so far is that we want our products and packaging as eco-friendly as possible. That’s why we for example don’t use plastic in packaging but a compostable solution. We also want the production of our products to not harm the environment, so we work with climate neutral producing printers that print on recycled and fsc labeled paper. We also are trying out eco-friendly printing techniques like risography which is very fun in the creative process.
But I‘m not sure how well we communicate that USP so far.
what do you think?
would be really helpful to hear some suggestions:)

·5 years agoMy business is completely unique. I've listened to my large customer base for over 30 years. For one packaging and shipping is incredibly important to me. I've learned to package my pieces for hard and soft drops, for truck vibration and more. I always say 'bubble wrap isn't always the answer. Every item in my shop is literally one of a kind in someway or another. I am known for the squatting cherub, which I started recreating and embellishing 14 years ago. The cherub itself may be the same, but every single one has a unique crown created by me. I started creating crowns over 20 years ago. To date I've created/ recreated over 2000 cherubs and angels. My pieces are for those who want the unique one of a kind home decor or gift. If I have pieces that are not created by me, they are unique, rare antiques and vintage. I started the tattered tails that you will find on my animal statues years ago. And so on. I took my love for art and mixed it with home decor. I am sometimes copied, but never duplicated. I mix all my own paint, liquid gold and use my own homemade rusting liquid and patinas. I am still trying to define my shop. ..LOL. I will get there. I LOVE my customers and will only bring them the best.

·5 years agoUSP... this is something I’ve struggled with... do I make things that I like that I haven’t seen out there or do I make more of what people are looking for? I haven’t seen many cross stitch designers who focus on symmetry around the center, and I haven’t seen many who have rubber ducks or snowflakes made out of other winter items. So am I keeping myself from sales by being unique? Or is my uniqueness really my USP? Either way, I feel like I need to continue doing what I love so my shop does not become a chore.

SevenStarsTarot
·5 years agoMy USP is bringing Astrology and Tarot together so that they support each other in a blended reading.
My readings help people to reframe problems or dilemmas, get a sense of where they are on their journey in a particular area of life, and receive a balanced and unbiased view of how they are proceeding. I might be able to offer suggestions that arise from the cards that are counter intuitive, or from the astrological chart that capitalises on talents they have shelved or are underdeveloped.
I have a foundation in astrology with the Company of Astrologers, and I am currently in training for Hellenistic astrology and horary. I have no formal training in Tarot, but 15 years of experience as a professional.
Most sellers offer automated scripts for their birth charts, which is a list of paragraphs largely unrelated and often contradictory because of the nature of individual placements in the chart. Real astrology readings are analysed by a person, who then synthesises the chart. This means that only the most relevant information is explored, the character of a person is given in a more holistic way with emphasis that would make sense of say; a shy Leo, or a gentle Aries (they would have other more dominant placements in their chart, such as a Cancerian moon and Mercury with Virgo Rising). This is real astrology, and there are only a handful of people providing it in depth on etsy currently.
Customers say I really hit home with themes and details in their lives, that I am a kind person and I go the extra mile to get them answers or work through some things with them. I like to give clients something to really contemplate in themselves, and a way forward with decisions or problems even if the outlook does not look favourable. It is important to empower them.
All kinds of people visit my shop, but it is mostly deep thinkers and spiritual seekers that arrive at my door

·5 years agoMy USP is the personalization of my pieces, ring holders that have a very high emotional value, since they are given as a gift in very important moments of the life of couples, as well as of loved ones and friends. I offer a high degree of personalization and care in the details, both of the ring holders and the experience of opening a gift, I am an expert in this!
I am always innovating in finding new, original designs. Maximum quality in my finishes although they have that rustic and elegant air, too.

·5 years agoMy Art is handmade. First, I scour the world looking for that unique scene in nature or in a Cityscape. I come home and sketch the scene first on paper. Then I work the whole Canvas to get a great Composition. I spend a minimum of 40 hours on each piece! When I'm finished I take it to my excellent Printer and order a paper print in Giclee or a Canvas print. He only produces Limited Edition Giclee prints. They are from the utmost quality. Not mass produced! Producing thousands of prints destroys the integrity of the work and the Artist.
You see I went to Art School for Painting and Printmaking. Lithography and etchings which are the oldest method of printing. My prints are numbered and signed. And Limited Edition does not mean in the thousands but in the hundreds. Something that will hold up over time!!

LyuikoGallery
·5 years agoMy USP is that my paintings and graphics (or rather, their digital files, since most of the works are sold) are intended for people who are looking for a story, a thought, an idea in a work of art. This is what I also value the most. I actually wanted to be a writer, but somehow color and paint became my tools for telling stories. I have a rich imagination and my works are whimsical and unique. I believe that you will never get bored with them.

alchemies
·5 years agoEverybody is unique in a way.
My main drive when creating is something soul related and more specifically the ability we all have to transform an energy to another. That's the meaning of my shop name alchemies and the gallery name in my place alchimia that I run since 2013. So each artwork created from me has a story and I always am more than happy share this story with the customer. These stories always refer to our huge internal strength and to our true nature which is loving and positive.
So my artworks are soul reminders have a function influenced from religious art, despite the fact there are obviously contemporary artworks.
All above doesn't mean I need an elitistic sum of customers. I have realized That all the people can listen to their heart and understand art speaking to heart.
