Hi there!

My name is Amy and I am a shop optimization specialist here at Etsy. My main focus is helping sellers think about strategies for growth.

With the holidays around the corner, it’s the perfect time to talk about how defining your brand can help your shop stand out from the competition and attract new buyers during the busy shopping season…and beyond.

A clear brand brings your business to life by communicating what you are about, why your product is the best choice, and what people can expect. Your brand can help attract new buyers and keep existing customers coming back to your shop–some may even become brand loyalists!

According to a Bond Brand Loyalty study, 44% of US consumers plan to give holiday gifts purchased from brands they are loyal to.

So how do you define your brand? I recommend starting with a brand promise. A brand promise is a statement that succinctly describes the feeling or experience your business consistently delivers. You can use it to inform just about every business decision you make, from graphic design to shop policies.

To hone in on your brand ask yourself the following questions:

Why do I sell my products?

The story behind your products is what makes them special! Did you start a vintage clothing business because you loved playing dress up in your grandmother’s closet as a kid? Think about how you can tie that detail into your brand.

What makes my product unique or more valuable than my competitors’ products?

Think about your business from your customers’ perspective: How do you serve their needs in a way that other businesses cannot? Maybe you use a certain material or have the most original designs. Whatever it is, you want to maximize it!

Which words do I want people to associate with my products?

Think about the descriptive words that set your products apart from your competition. For example, would you describe your products as bright and whimsical, or classic and elegant?

Who are my customers?

Imagine the person who is most likely to purchase from your shop and create a message that speaks to their needs, interests, and values directly. Keep this target customer in mind as you design, market, and merchandise your products.

Now you’re ready to craft your statement!

My brand is:

one woman, all handmade, energetically charged

with a background in energy healing I handmake and charge all my items. I focus on quality over quantity. Everything from beginning to end is done by me. Seaglass is self found. Crystals must all be touched felt and handpicked for specific energies and many of my items are brought to energy vortexes like the ones in Sedona and put in crystal grids.
