Etsy Insights: What are people buying right now?
Hello, Etsy Sellers! Mary from the Merchandising team here. I lead our team of category experts that identify changes in buyer purchasing patterns, the driving factors behind them, and emerging trends across the industry and marketplace.
The world as we know it has been changing over the last couple months and we’re seeing more and more buyers coming to Etsy making purchases that reflect this. We’re keeping a close eye on how purchasing habits are evolving during this time and I want to share some of latest findings with you all:
As buyers spend more time at home, they are looking to update their spaces and work-from-home environments.
- Art category sales are up from last year, driven by purchases for Art prints.
- Now is a great time to offer home decor related products, including wall art, organizational solutions and seasonal options like pillows and wreaths.
DIY kits are growing in popularity as a home activity and gift idea.
- Craft Supplies category sales are growing rapidly; and research shows a surge in buyer purchase intent for Craft Supplies industry wide.
- With this in mind, are you able to disassemble any of your products and offer them as an activity?
With a great focus on health and wellness, self-care categories are on the rise.
- Searches for “spa” related gifts in the Bath & Beauty category increased 450% from March to April.
- Think about packaging self-care related products as gift sets or care packages.
Sending gifts when you can’t be there, and new ways of celebrating milestones together emerge.
- In the coming quarter, 33% of Etsy buyers’ projected purchases are centered on gifting.
- Think about ways to package your items as a gift set or care package, and plan offerings for gifting occasions like Father’s Day, birthdays, anniversaries and graduations.
Comfortwear is gaining traction in the Clothing category as Working from Home becomes the new normal.
- In Women’s Clothing, comfortable yet zoom-worthy clothing aka “comfortwear” is picking up. Sweatshirts and Jumpsuits are selling well, and searches in women’s clothing for “linen” are up compared to last year.
- Consider offering bold accessories that can stand out on a virtual call, or lounge options within your apparel assortment.

·4 years agoMy hand knitted items are selling well, they are difficult to photograph, so as Lindsay Albanese a celebrity stylist does, I might by a fitted white tee to wear underneath my knitted items to do some selfie photos for my Etsy store. It is an idea still thinking about it.

But Easter is coming up fast. I'm hoping for at least few sales of some of my Easter games. My sales have always tended to come in "bunches." I'm just coming off a bunch, so I suppose a lull was just about due.

·4 years agoSince December has my shop been dead! Barely some viewers and visits and no sales. Untill 1st March where I listed a new item and people are liking it! Have had some sales and a good balance of viewers and visits and this item is the most favorited and viewed item currently in my shop! I listed a personalized Ramadan money box for kids. Because of the upcoming Ramadan month soon. People are loving it. I would say to keep up with every occasion because it may sell everytime. I am now working on An Easter product and getting a Mother’s day gift product ready to be listed on my shop in good time. So I would personally say keep up with every trend and make it on your own way that could match your niche and theme ☺️☺️ People are always looking for something for every occasion.

I have many St Patrick's Day and Easter items, but I'm only selling well a few of them. I guess it all depends on the Etsy algorithm and our efforts in marketing. (Up until now I didn't use the forums or teams and hardly any social media platforms or ads. I wanted an organic growth, but that's really slow, so I recently started using Pinterest, as I understand it does really well with Etsy. I've also started working on my website and I intend to start some google advertising and Pinterest advertising.)

I notice that you do not ship to the United States, that some parts of your shop are not yet filled out, and that your titles and tags need work. I suggest that you hold off on ads for at least a while. It is my understanding that the ads work hand-in-hand with regular search views, so you want to reach a point where you are already getting organic views from people likely to buy your items before you pay to build on that and get even more. For now, concentrate on getting your shop ready to serve as many customers as possible.
You may want to start a new thread in the shop critique forum to get suggestions.

·4 years agoI'm new to Etsy (selling on another platform) and now I'm here and I'm learning slowly. I paid for Etsy Ads but got fewer visits. As a newbie, do you think maintaining Etsy Ads is a good strategic plan? how do you promote your products without paying for advertising? I read that if you just edit or add a new photo to your listing and publish it, it works. I would like to continue to enjoy my passion and at the same time increase my income with retirement. Any advice is very much appreciated.

·5 years agoCandles are selling super well for me. Sales have been up since Covid shutdowns began. Sales continue to be strong. We just hit our 10,000th sale today.

my sales for Jan so far, compared to last year, are up 2% on Etsy, and 26% on Amazon Handmade

·5 years agoMany people are looking and favorate but not so much sells, most only one piece. The best month for sell was Oktober in my shop. I think it will be better after chrismas if many have get money gifts.

·5 years agoAfter a couple of years of slow sales, things have picked up and sales in October and November have been very good. I am selling a lot of lower ticket items and people seem to be buying one or two at a time. A few years back, it wasn't unusual to sell 4-6 items to a single buyer.

·5 years agoI actually had to deactivate the puzzle box sections from my store due to receiving over 40 orders since the day before Thanksgiving.....hope to be caught up by this weekend, take a breath, and then activate them again with a very limited inventory.....think we built a monster but love it.....

·5 years agoSelling lots of fresh cut evergreens, bayberry wax and mullein candles, lampshade hardware and styrene, finished lampshades, herbs and tinctures, and wood ash. Best November in 11 years!

I have already had my best October ever, and we still have this weekend to go - and I was sold out for quite a lot of the time over the last weekend
I only had 1 item here for sale to USA, and I did have all of them for sale everywhere in previous years, and I have shut off that selling overseas now

·5 years agoYes sales are up 100% in my Christmas sweater shop over this time last year. Views are down but conversion is up 200%. (I don’t think I was doing free shipping last year). Ppl are definitely shopping earlier.

·5 years agoNot much, probably face masks. Customers are faving but not buying. There has been a decline in trafic across all of the sites I use. I suspect its the aftermath of the american elections browsers are distracted by more interesting things. Which is why they browse in the first place.
I think that now that the cliffhanger is gone the result is looking more like a cured ham than streaky bacon. People are settling back to their old erm.. covid worries with no jobs. So dark roads ahead.

·5 years agoPeople in the UK have definitely started xmas shopping earlier than usual this year and I'm getting big peaks in traffic at weekends, maybe because people can't travel or visit friends under lockdown so they're browsing the internet instead. Personalised items are popular and lots of people are sending them as gifts through the post (oh how I loathe that crappy little wrong-way-round 'gift' thing the Etsy system generates!). I'm doing well with rude things and slightly political/lockdown-related items too - I think people are looking for something 'cheap and cheerful' that makes them laugh! And I've done a couple of commissions for weddings that are happening next year, I guess people like to have something to look forward to...

·5 years agoThank you for this great information. I have noticed a considerable increase in the sale of wall decoration. It is difficult for me to try to create new items that are fashionable now since I think that you have to be faithful to the style of your shop.
