Etsy Insights: Using attributes and improving search visibility
Howdy!
I’m Jenny, part of the Taxonomy and Structured Data team at Etsy. We do research on what info buyers need to find and buy items on Etsy. We then ask sellers to enter that info in a very specific way through attributes and categories when creating a listing. Collecting this info in this way helps us use it most effectively to surface your items to the buyers interested in items like yours—in search, browse, and merchandising. Today I want to share some tips for using attributes.
Filling out attributes accurately increases your visibility
- Filling out attributes lets us show your item in more relevant searches and browse. The more sellers that fill out an attribute, the sooner we show it to buyers as a filter.
- Buyers who use filters spend more during each visit than other buyers. If you don’t fill out attributes on your listings, they won’t appear in those filtered searches—so those shoppers using filters won’t find them. Filling out attributes is the quickest way to be seen by buyers who know what they want.
Keep it consistent
We’ve seen sellers change their attributes for a specific item seasonally. Adding tags and attributes that are seasonal but don’t accurately describe your item doesn’t help your item get seen or purchased on Etsy by shoppers most likely to buy your items. Your attributes and tags should most accurately describe your item and shouldn’t change. For example, a Christmas tree will always be for Christmas whether it’s May or December.
Keep an eye out for new attributes
We add new attributes all the time and are building cool experiences using them! Fill out any new & existing attributes with relevant information so we can show your item to more shoppers.
Filters on the Etsy App coming soon!
In the near future, for the first time, filters will be shown on the Etsy app! See here.
This means filters will be shown and used by a whole new audience of buyers, and it’s even more important to accurately fill out attributes or risk not showing up in buyer browsing and searching.
Your items in more places for more people
We’re using your attributes to show your items to buyers in new ways, like shopping by an item’s style or what room a buyer might find it in. The more you accurately fill out attributes the more ways we can show your items to buyers. We’re also looking forward to releasing filters on mobile apps soon, which will reach a whole new audience of buyers.

Stepping back and thinking like a buyer, what kinds of search filters would you like to see when shopping your favorite categories?

·3 years agoI would like to see attributes broken down with more color choices. Peach, aqua, tan, gold, navy, etc. "Rainbow" doesn't always work for shoppers, I feel.
Also, I would like to see the attribute "handmade" more firmly defined. While I appreciate the sellers who create designs and then send them out for construction, (POD), they are thrown into the same pot as a seller who makes the item start to finish with their own hands.

·5 years agoAs a silversmith, I all too frequently see attributes for silver that need to be refined: Fine Silver (99.5% pure silver); Sterling Silver (.925%silver); Silver Plate; Silver filled; and Zamak which contains no silver. Also, distinguish between silver color or stone tone, from actual metal. Aluminum has a silvery color, but it is not silver metal. Many people think they are buying silver when they are actually buying aluminum or zinc. Zamak contains no silver.

·5 years agoIt would be nice to be able to type in your own if one of your choices doesn’t work. For example: collars: The other day I was listing a dress with a Mandarin collar. You didn’t have that as a selection. I had to leave blank.
