Etsy Insights: Staying creative at home
Hey there! I’m Samantha Sullentrup, the creative behind PublicHouseCo. I specialize in custom architecture illustrations. I’m proud to have customers all over the world and relish in the undeniably beautiful spaces they ask me to paint. Like many of you, COVID-19 has completely upended the way I work. I’m having to figure out how to make time to answer emails, work on projects, and continue reaching clients all while still being engaged with my three daughters who are now home full time. Oh yes - and teaching them. Can’t forget that! While I have absolutely not solved this dilemma, I’m choosing to see this challenge as not just as a burden, but also as a gift. A little slice of time that is standing still and with the people I love more than life itself.
Seeing as the Etsy community is made up of 83% women - many of whom run businesses out of their home, I’m sure I’m not the only creative/maker who’s figuring out what business and life looks like in these unprecedented times. So, I’ve compiled a list of things that are helping me work through the struggles and wanted to share:
- Talk to your partner/friend. Seven days went by without a single order. Without a single email inquiring about my work. I was feeling the huge burden of no sales, wondering how I could make up for it, and just plain ole freaking out. I couldn’t wrap my head around how this could get better, but I was determined to fix it myself. When I finally said something to my husband, he calmed my anxiety and started brainstorming with me a few ideas to create interest and revenue. Talking your worries out allows for others to carry your burdens with you - making your load so much lighter. Call your mom, FaceTime your BFF or use this community to talk through things.
- Don’t feel like you need to reinvent your brand, but do find new ways to be creative. This is going to be a weird few weeks/months and sales may slow. I encourage you to think outside the box about how to accommodate shoppers new needs, but don’t lose yourself in the process. Stick to your values and do what you love. If you love painting - go outside and paint your backyard. Or give yourself a 30-day challenge in your area of expression. A few weeks ago, we started a family sketch book. It was just a little way to get the whole family engaged in creativity, but it’s now become our go-to boredom solution.
- Re-imagine the time. I always worked in my studio on Tuesdays and Thursdays for a solid 4-5 hours while my kids were at school/daycare. The time was quiet, focused, and full of great podcasts. Guess what? That ain’t happening now. My “work” time has been at the dining room table with a laptop and generally lasts less than an hour. If I need to have studio time, I figure out a way to get my family involved. I put the girls to work folding my shipping boxes for .05 cents each or lay out a big paper with their watercolors and let them have at it. It keeps them busy and it's a productive time for me. Finally, even though it might not be your normal preference, consider working in the evenings. Right now it’s the only quiet/focused/great podcast time of the day. Have a clear agenda of what you need to get done when you have these little pockets of time and check things off. You might feel like nothing is getting done - but those checks will prove you wrong!
- Take advantage of the time. A gift to see your kids a little more, play uno a thousand times, HouseParty with your family, and actually read the books on your shelves. Use the time to connect with the people in your home, be a little less “controlled,” and sink in to your greater purpose.
I’d love to hear how you’re leaning in to the new changes, using your time at home, and staying creative along the way??

·6 years agoI also am new to Etsy and finding when it comes to marketing it’s difficult to sort through. I keep getting the message that my keywords and tags are all wrong and have spent hours trying to work on it . Little bit frustrating and can’t find the support. I keep plugging along a know I’ll figure out. I’m work for an essential store hard to put in the time I need to make this work. Etsy please make it easier to find where the support is or be able to talk to a live person.

·6 years agoI am a new seller and because of all the stuff going on I had my shop in holiday mode for a few weeks. I just focused on family time (young adult kids that still live at home), baking, sketching, gardening, and pushing myself to learn new jewelry-making techniques. Doing my best to make the best of this time and hopefully soon I can get back to my daytime job.

·6 years agoThank you so much for sharing this and supporting many of us here. Because I am new to Etsy, I just found that sellers are able to discuss and exchange their experiences. It’s important to know that you aren’t the one going through this situation and everything will eventually be alright!

·6 years agoDifficult days and the uncertainty that surrounds me does not make it easier, as an artisan and self-employed I live with concern the health and economic crisis of the Covidien-19, with a decrease in turnover and without clear prospects for improvement. I greatly appreciate being able to enjoy the peace and harmony within my workshop and the environment where I chose to live.
I hope that once this nightmare is over, better times and new consumer models will come to stay, that there will be a place for small companies, with quality and timeless local productions. That as consumers we will do the exercise of looking for the traceability of what we buy, be it food or articles. I wish it was not just a utopia in my thoughts ...

·6 years agoHi, Luckily I've had more time to make more dog toys and get them listed during this time in our lives, plus I've had an increase in sales at this time too!
I am also taking an on-line dog training class, so that keeps me busy since dog training classes are canceled. I want to come out of this still moving forward!

·6 years agoHello! Thank you for sharing your insights. I am fairly new to Etsy and of course, having some issues due to the pandemic. I also had knee surgery right before the shut down here in Oregon. So, double whammy, I've been unable to create for the last month. I'm trying to reach out and do some networking. If anyone has any suggestions for me, I would very much appreciate it ☺️
Thanks, Lee

·6 years agoI don't have anyone else at home with me except my cat, but this post still helped me: I just opened my Etsy business and I was nervous that people were looking but not buying, and hearing that it's slow for even people who have a thriving business makes me realize I just have to have a little more patience and see it as a reflection of the times. I hope that your business picks up again soon, and I think it's wonderful have your focusing on what to be grateful for. It definitely reminds me to do the same.

·6 years agoI enjoyed reading about someone who can relate ! I’ve managed to turn my kitchen island into my home studio. And have carved out time (meager 2 hours if that) to create in the afternoon and if time and energy allows it I create some more at night during that sweet hours of 10-12am. It’s my new norm and I’m starting to really embrace and accept it. Good luck to you and thanks for the great article

·6 years agoThank you so much for your post. I have been on Etsy for 6 months now and I absolutely love the whole creative vibe that stems from browsing other talented people’s stores. But I have found my own style now and am using a little of this precious time to experiment more. I work as a fulltime teacher which currently has a new online, ‘how on earth to inspire 5 year olds who hadn’t learnt to touch type yet, let alone find their name on a keyboard’ vibe to it. But I digress. When you have that little order come in and find yourself smiling as you add a hand written note, then I knew this is me for the long haul. Times might be slow but we will see this through. One day I hope to make this my full time job. Keep smiling everyone and just stay true to yourselves. XxKaren @ LillbitsCreations.

·6 years agoMy heart is warmed by your honest post and the posts of others. It truly makes you feel that we are not alone. Have hope and trust. Since money is tight right now, I'm working on using up all my unused supplies. It's a great way to clean out, almost for free. I'm also spending the day going over my tags. Mother's Day is right around the corner and it may be easier for buyers to purchase on line. Lastly, I'm going over my photography too. One of those things I never seem to get to. And I never have enough for Christmas! God bless and have faith. Life wont always look like this.

·6 years agoGREAT POST.... full of insight & advise. Having a supportive spouse is definitely a blessing. That I do not take for granted. He's the one who puts up with the occasional dining table covered with boxes and pans. The kitchen that might smell like his least favorite fragrance. The distracted wife who will stand for almost an hour just looking at molds, raw soap.... and drawers of labels before an idea gels into an actual project that takes another hour to create. And never complains when dinner is a little late. The husband who never says no when I want to RENT skin space to experiment with a new formula of lotion or soap, and expresses interest.... even enthusiasm.... when lending a critique or review. He is my BEST critic, guinea pig, canvas.... cheerleader, ROCK....inspiration, and most of all, Best Friend. ART is a beautiful world.... all consuming, and completely soulfully full of emotion and mood. And every moment in my world is full and fun... and Love.

·6 years agoThanks so much for sharing your ideas on how to make these extraordinary times valuable. I have actually appreciated the time to get a little bit better organized. While i am STILL doing everything i can to avoid cleaning the garage with my husband, i did join with a neighbor to make roughly 350 fabric masks for other neighbors in need. We asked that they pay forward donations where they think the money would most help at this time. We did receive roughly $1000.00 that we donated to our local food bank. We ran out of elastic and still have enough cut fabric scraps for about 125 more masks. Just waiting for Amazon to deliver more elastic, but of course, that is much slower than normal.
I am also staying on and off at a friend's house to take care of her dogs while she is suddenly being treated for Stage 3C ovarian cancer diagnosed at the beginning of this shut-down. She is at MDAnderson in Houston. Her husband comes home for some of the time but she has been there for over two weeks after having massive surgery. She comes home today and I know her doggies will be thrilled to see her.
Regarding my Etsy store, I am surprised to say that business is steady. Not amazing, but ok, and I was working on a CAD design with a company I hired that we had to table since my main contact is home with her kids. I so look forward to starting the process up again in order to roll out a beautiful collection of stacked rings in either 14k gold (with a tiny diamond) or 925 silver (with a less expensive stone) with the Prayer of St. Francis being the theme. This is a more refined version of silver rings I've sold for years on Etsy. My inspiration for the design is from Cartier and Bulgari, so these are going to be trendy! Stay tuned!
Y'all stay safe. Stay the course. Don't give up. We are resetting, realizing what is most important and what we can remove from our lives. Yes, I am not home schooling like so many of you are since my babies are grown, but I wish you love and patience as your spend this important time with yours.

·6 years agoHello everyone:) Like many of you, I now have LOTS of time on my hands. My Grandmother used to say that things happen for a reason and we don't always understand what that reason is. The restaurant where I had worked shut it's doors about a week before the virus started making big headlines here in Florida. I live at home with my elderly parents, my Dad is a lung cancer survivor and my Mom has heart issues. While I was understandably upset about losing my job, I now feel it was meant to be. I've pretty much been able to self quarantine for about a month now, so I don't bring this blasted virus home to my parents!
I also feel like I've been given a precious gift, extra time with my parents, especially my Dad. I've been using some of this time to start experimenting with new metal working techniques and it's been real nice to ask his opinion occasionally on a jewelry project I'm working on. (I always have a TON of ideas about things I'd like to craft but was not able to get around to them.) He is also a very creative and 'crafty' soul:) He does watch repair as a hobby now and always has an old railroad watch or two on his work bench in various stages of completion. I love being able to 'pick his brains' for metal working ideas, he's had to hand craft some of the parts he needs to repair these watches!

From a busy life altogether it became saturated & stagnant. We make Handcrafted Leather Shoes & joined Etsy around a Month ago. I did not received any order on this Platform but very hopeful that let the world become healthy & out of COVID 19 , then business will come automatically. During these times of boredom , we decided to post Myth Busters #Doyouknow on all Social Sites about Leather Shoes. People should know its advantages , how to use it rightly, some interesting facts & Shoe Hacks, that we share daily with them. We are trying to spread awareness about Handmade Leather Shoes everywhere. Hope everyone likes it. In the end, just want to say Keep your Masks on , Wash your hands regularly for 20 seconds at least & stay at home . Thanks & Regards !!!

·6 years agoI'm taking this time to add new designs and products to my shop. It's actually been an incentive to stay in my design studio where I can spend hours there without feeling like I have somewhere else to be. I am a long time event planner that designed my own signature line of luxury paper and event accessories such as wedding and bridal shower invitations, decor banners for showers and parties, favor tags, signs and more... even candles to create ambiance for home and events. Since my Etsy shop is relatively new I've taken the time to expand it while reading up on articles as to how to do just that. When you're out and about you don't spend the time that is always needed to expand and grow your clientele. This quarantine has allowed me that time and I feel more productive for having to gone through it. I even feel inspired! I'm really pleased with my new spring designs and proud to now add them to my shop. I'm working even harder than when I am filling orders. There is a satisfaction in all of this because It makes me feel as if I'm growing even though business itself is at a stand still. With all the cancellations of wedding, showers, parties and events it's very scary. My industry as a whole has taken a huge hit. When I'm designing it brings me such joy that I feel less anxious. It's enjoyable to put together samples of new designs without worrying about deadlines. I'm free to take all the time I want to finish my product and that in and of itself is FREEING! My advice to others is to use this time to reconnect with our talent/art so you can enjoy the very thing that you make that you rely on to create revenue. So life gave me lemons right now but the lemonade I make now will quench the thirsty of potential clients later on and in turn create the revenue needed to be a successful business. Corny, I know but I couldn't help myself! My wish for everyone is to be safe a nd keep the faith! Brighter days are ahead.

·6 years agoThanks for your ideas and energy, i'm a bit of an old crafter and l spend a good deal of time practicing my fiddling skills now, ( only had it a short while and love it!) and we play blue grass , lots of June Carter stuff,, i m sad i can t now play with friends here who live too far away and not well into technology.
I m a textile artist mainly and only just setting out on Etsy so im glad that l have now established a few sales , one was for a 'musical mask' l made for a new customer , thanks Gayle from New Orleans!!!!! l am so proud. Also it taught me lots about postage, i hope i got it right, Gayle.
By the way, is there any one out there in USA ( or anywhere really) who can Zoom or something to share a bit of music, please? and who plays a bit to share a whiole, as we have no one at present. Blue grass is the favourite here. Pass on my plea, please. l'd love it .
l do Skype, Face time and Whats app with family . Have tried Zoom once but maybe there is something better?????? l shall never get to you in real life but on line.. who knows.
So l'm now making masks and love it.
it seems we re gonna need them for some time!! l'm 70 ! l hope i can outlive this virus!!! JillsTopnots

·6 years agoHi, thank you for your post! It is lovely to hear how you are doing and I have enjoyed reading though all the replies you have received. I live in France, I sell antique and vintage treasures and I also sell my handmade lampshades. Over the past fifteen years I have been accumulating items which I have never had the time to sell and finally this is the moment that I can work through all my precious stock and sort it out. My husband says that I have at least five years worth of items to list! He may not be exaggerating!!
I am creating some new lampshade templates so that I can offer other shapes and sizes to my customers, I am really excited about this as I have been too busy to have the time to 'play' with new styles.
Away from work, I am enjoying drinking tea in my garden, listening to the most beautiful bird song, reclining on my garden chair, looking at the deep blue sky, not an aeroplane in sight. It is the simple things that will get us through these difficult times.
Stay safe everyone, what a lovely Etsy community we have.

I hope that all this coronavirus pandemic ends soon so that no more human lives are lost and the creatives who are being severely beaten (myself included) can resume our sales and our normal lives ... just my thoughts ... encouragement and a lot of hope to everyone (sorry if my english is not so good, yet) - please visit my store: www.etsy.com/shop/arkayka

·6 years agoHi - my husband is older and has lung issues so he and I have been staying away from the rest of the family as much as possible. It's not always easy since we share a home - but we have our inlaw and are actually having dinner together which entails conversation, so it's a big change from eating with the gang which is generally quite lively. We're taking advantage of this by eating all the things we love and they don't. I made about 70 masks for my customers and friends, so that kept me busy but left me behind in orders which I really need to catch up on. I donated the masks as I just can't charge for them at this time. My daughter, son in law and two grandchildren are all funny and are enjoying this time together despite the grumbles. The Easter Bunny just made the round in a convertible, stopping at each house for pictures - everyone at least 6 feet apart. We have had birthday parades and all kinds of things. Most are adapting pretty well and making the best of things and if we see each other, it's outside at safe distances. I'm thankful I have my business to keep me busy - I am new to Etsy and am getting traffic but only one sale so far. Eek! I am also on FB where I have over 1000 followers who tend to keep me very busy - so I'm good though a little nervous about whether there will be new orders after I am caught up. I don't believe in worrying about things I have no control over and highly recommend that attitude to help get you through this - that, along with laughter and maintaining contact with others whether it be via social media, phone calls or whatever method works for you is so important, especially for those who live alone. Let the creativity flow and try to smile your way through this. Good luck to all and stay safe.

·6 years agoMy wife and I have a pour painting shop called insPOURation. She’s the painter and I do everything else. Painting is usually just a part time endeavor for her but since her hours have been cut back at her normal job she’s had a lot more time to paint. The result is that she’s had the opportunity to be super creative and try a lot of new things which has led to some pretty steady sales so far in April. The hardest thing for us is that my son has been super cautious about the virus so we’ve only been able to see our granddaughters for limited amounts of time and we practice social distancing. What I would give for a hug! I hope everybody in the Etsy community stays healthy and safe.

·6 years agoI haven't had this much free time in years. I love having the opportunity to work with my yarn and materials without having to go back to the real world. Granted a huge job offer for me got tabled indefinitely because of COVID-19 and everything quickly fell apart... but I'm finding calm in the unknown. It's scary out there right now, especially where I live. But I feel grateful I'm in a mental place to entertain new possibilities once things return to a new normal. This pandemic has really shaken my world and has me re-evaluating things.

·6 years agoI only just recently (December 2019) started putting effort into my Etsy shop. In January and February I noticed the hard work was starting to pay off. I was getting more visitors to my shop and I was starting to make a few sales. That mostly stopped in the first week of March unfortunately. During these slow times, I've been busy reading more, documenting (photographing) the impact the virus has taken on the Charleston area and small businesses. I'm also photographing my family more to document how they're spending their free time during the pandemic. Also, starting today I'm donating 10% of all Etsy sales I make to the Pay it Forward Charleston organization. They donate bags of locally bought fruits and vegetables to Charleston area food and beverage employees that have been laid off or furloughed, so that they are able to feed themselves and their family members.

·6 years agoThank you for sharing! It really does bring relief hearing everyone's situation. Although all of our circumstances are different, we're ALL trying to find ways to accommodate and find solutions to this unexpected crisis. Hearing other artists words does a load for other creatives. I agree with all of these methods. I find trying to keep to a schedule is helpful. Some days I get more done than others and I try not to get discouraged on the days where I don't get as much accomplished. Making a to-do list is always helpful. Making time for other things that bring you comfort and relaxation should also be on that list. The other day when I was writing my to-do's I added "get up and stretch" and also "smile" ..it helps because I get tense and forget to do these things!

·6 years agoThe insights shared on all fronts of this quarantine post are very insightful. Although its difficult not to get caught up in the 'what if's' and overall unpredictability, I have found taking a deep breath and accepting that there is nothing we can do, has given me the ability to move forward. I feel like this whole crises has forced us to look inward, decide what is truly important to us and focus on those positive elements in our lives. Once I have let go of the fear of the unknown, my creativity and motivation have blossomed. I am focused on redesigning my site, reorganizing my inventory and creating new pieces...more importantly, to celebrate the beautiful life I have with my family and loved ones.

·6 years agoMy studio is on the balcony of the living room at home, which is full of handmade materials. As long as there is time, I will sit on the balcony and use the materials in my hand to design and make different handmade products. If there is a handicraft suitable for my daughter, I will give her one, and she will collect it

·6 years agoExcellent post. I'm primarily a wedding photographer so right now all my work is cancelled. I set up my Etsy store selling cards very recently to help being in a bit of extra cash. So although it's an awful world out there, there has been a silver lining for me! Keep going guys.. we'll all get through it

·6 years agoHi Samantha, I’m Matt. Maybe you can shed some insight on something for me. I’m a new seller to Etsy, my shop is about a month old. Although, I’d consider myself fortunate to have 6 sales so far, I’m a bit confused/frustrated with the ad campaigns.. I first started off purchasing ads with a daily limit of $5. As of today I’ve sold 1 item resulting from ads having about 220 clicks. In that time however, I’ve spent close to $30 for those ads. I’ve dropped my daily spending down to $1 a day and that gets me 4 clicks and it’s spent. Are each ad click typically 30 cents? Is there a threshold if you spend more the ad clicks go down? Do you spend on ads and does it prove useful for your business? I have sold 5 items from direct searches and 1 item from ads, I’m wondering if spending money on ads maybe isn’t worth it for me. Any insight you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

·6 years agoWell all this is not so different from what I always do. I’m a home body and would much rather be at home than running around town. I do work outside the home at a very physical job. So being at home is wonderful. I’m on a good schedule to work on my crafts and it keeps me busy. My kids all live close and I talk to them often. Nothing exciting here just made more time to get my grafts done.

·6 years agoThank you so much for your positive insights. This is a difficult time indeed, nothing like we have ever experienced. Sometimes we must all feel isolated and it creeps up on you when you don't expect it. I have had my shop since December and I have had several sales which is wonderful. For me my crafting is spiritually uplifting and challenging. I am forced-retired graphic designer and at 52 became a teller! I am not doing that anymore. Not creative but I loved the people part. That is why talking with people in the Etsy community is something I need to do more of, to be connected. And reading what you wrote made me feel like you are making the best of things, figuring it out and enjoying your time with your kids. When we are back to normal, I will have my infant granddaughter a couple days a week and craft as I can. I love what I do, have so many more ideas of things I want to create for my shop, I just feel like it is hard to know if how I am putting in my listings is effective. If anyone gets a chance to look at my shop and have any advice that would be welcomed. Anyway thanks for reaching out to us. Your work is wonderful!

·6 years agoHi! My Etsy store has slowed down to a crawl, but now that I think about it, it was much needed for me. My mom was diagnosed with Cancer on Christmas day and passed away Feb 5th. One thing she asked of me before she passed away was that my husband and I take over there property and move in to take care of my dad. Granted we already own a house and have lived in it for 17 years. I promised my mom that I would, I just didn't know it would happen so quickly. So normally February through July are my busiest months. For the month of February it was really a struggle keeping up with all of my orders, but with the help of my daughter we managed to get through. So here we are trying to pack up our house, while cleaning out unwanted things from my dads house to make room for our things. Very stressful!! I love my dad so much and never thought twice as to moving in. We still have lots to do but we will manage! I am currently designing some new items for my store that I feel will be a big hit later this summer. I feel we will all be stronger in the end.

·6 years agoHi, I am also new to Etsy and trying to get this life moving again but first and foremost staying safe and working from home. Mankind will adapt to changes as hard as they are life always continues. For some sadly only different form and shape. I am more worried of the people out on the streets and people who have nothing at all. I have been there and still hanging on to the edge of it but I pray for change to the ones who need help and attention the most. Every life matters and I will remain positive, safe and loving regardless of these difficult times. I think most people will also learn to re-value their basic life values, I hope so at least. Sometimes life shakes us up to remind us, what is the most important things in life. Give 100% what ever you do and give it with love like there is no tomorrow! Keep safe and love to you all! M.

·6 years agoI teach an arts & crafts class for mentally ill individuals. Unfortunately I can't run my classes right now, but I've taken the time to go through the Esty crafts kits I haven't opened to learn the crafts. This is something I usually do a few days before the class begins, but why not now? So far I've made a sock owl stuffed toy, a small needlepoint owl, and a string art picture (not an owl, LOL).

·6 years agoIn these difficult times I try to keep myself occupied by thinking of what to make next. I make ragdolls and textiles items it’s been hard not being able to go to my little unit where I sell my things because of this virus but we’re all in the same boat. I’ve been trying to keep myself occupied at home by coming up with ideas for my ragdolls reading books and magazines and internet for inspiration. I think it’s important to give yourself a break sometimes and think positive.

·6 years agoI still am working but I am definitely enjoying spending more time working on some stuff for my Etsy Shop. Creating allows me to destress after a hard week at work and allows me to put my time and energy into something I love. Wishing everyone the best in these times. PS lofi and chill mixes are the best to listen too when creating.

·6 years agoThis is a good time to do some of the "Old Fashion" things if you can afford it - or just use what you have. Checkers can go on for hours. I love dominoes. Board games, Jacks can be played with almost anything that can be snatched up while you bounce a ball and teaches dexterity. There are so many things that all of us can do. Learn to knit - or fix the dryer - Utube has everything on it - just don't mess with electricity or gas. Gardening - The new under the tent gardens if affordable. I played all the time as a kid with anything and everything. Dolls need clothes... Love this post.

·6 years agoThank you from me too! And reading everyone's replies. For the past few months, I have been offering deeper and deeper discounts. Currently, 50% off which I believe is my way of making my shop's items more affordable and hopefully, supportive in hope for health and safety in these unprecedented times. I no longer have my dog walking clients and miss them -- and being outdoors. My routine has changed, more Netflix shows, sleeping in late and listening to local public radio all day (which I know isn't good). And baking banana bread -- if anyone would like a great, easy recipe, just let me know. Hoping for the best possible outcome for the world and my fellow Etsians.

·6 years agoI'm a newbie to Etsy... long boring story. Bottom line is, I love your directions. Once upon a time, I was a paralegal with many lawyers that were great workers in the world of intellectual property. They had many degrees and were extremely adaptable but sometimes dysfunctions on some levels. As a crafter, I know we must follow a disciplined path and adapt when the road takes a turn. The office joke was often twisted about God & Noah. I would poke
"how many times was it again that God told Noah to build that arc? Tell me later and try to remember that we really only need told once, write it down and read again!"
I thank you for this post. t

·6 years agoI am usually not the one saying this but my sales have really picked up. Perhaps because I sell pincushions and people are home long enough to see their old one needs replacing. With my grand daughters with me for 4 full days now, I'm really stressing over getting my work done. I've been hoping to get to make some masks to donate, get my patterns together finally... but alas, I'm up late and keeping busy. It has been a challenge with everyone under foot now.
I will say that its nice having a home studio everyday. I seem to be the only one who isn't adjusting to staying in. Now that my 9 year old grand daughter is with me and we have time, she has begun to learn to sew and embroider. We never had the time before. Its one of my little dreams coming true. I used to work when they were at school. I'm glad she is discovering new skills and learning that she can one day find a way to make some money using her happy, creative skills.
Best to you all. Stay safe. Be happy and lets hope we learn how to cope with these things and keep the world turning all at once!

·6 years agoThank you for sharing,
My story is oddly interesting, i was active seller on Etsy a long time ago and then decided to quit, because of a day job and 2 small kids on board but this quarantine actually made me get back to Etsy and start my shop once again.
I am happy that in tough times i can still find something positive and bring back my passion to life

·6 years agoThis is such a wonderful post. I enjoyed reading what everyone has said. Having worked at home for the past 8 years Im used to it. I do miss going out so much though. Just wandering around fabric stores and craft stores is my daily excercise. My heart breaks for the families that have lost loved ones and suffered this demonic virus. I just havent felt that creative during the past week. I took a few days and made lots of mask not to sell but to give to my family and friends and who ever else might need one. I only watch the news to keep up with the current public orders here in Chicago. When I start getting antsy about the news I turn it off. I have done some reorginization and cleaning in my sewing room, some bingeing on you tube and my refrigerator. Anyone else eating maybe a little more than they should.

·6 years agoI'm from Italy so you can understand. I've been isolated for 35 days till today.
Fortuntately here in the countryside, far away from the city helps: we are well, with sufficient furniture and food (I make mostly by myself spending a lot of time spring cleaning, preparing boxes to donate and taking care of the elderly) so I can still work, with less time available, but still. And there is always so much to do and to plan!
Even if the orders have drastically collapsed, sometimes a client or two reminds me how special they are with words like :"I really want your piece, I'll wait" or "We are in the same boat, feel free to take your time"... they rely on me even in this dramatic moment and I'm so grateful!
Others I know on Etsy have writen to me from the first days to know about the situation and I was able to give them suggestions before the world disaster, I did my best to help and prepare. I found something good in being tragically the first: to warn the second. This special contact between us was very special too.
All these things make me think about priorities, who/what is really important in life, a slow approach to the environment, production, environment etc. and I think that I will change my approach more in the future ...and if I can spend more money to support small businesses I will: expect my orders Etsians!
Stay at home, we'll make it!

·6 years agoThank you. These are unusual times but I am just so thankful that so many people around the world are spending more time with their children...just wonderful. My sanity/coping strategies...#1. bread baking (or baking in general)competition with my husband. Although they will probably have to forklift us out at the end of all this. My husband and I used to cook and bake a lot more together pre-children. It is like a return to those times for us. #2. I have just delved more deeply into whimsy. Creating things for the fun of it, understanding that these are tough times financially for many people and they need to focus on purchasing the essentials. Stay healthy and safe everyone.

·6 years agoWe have been busy as well. I have been making masks to give to my community. I am 48 and live in a retirement town on the coast. My elderly neighbor lives alone and just beat cancer. I made her a mask first for it would break my heart if she got sick with this virus. I am just having a hard time finding filters. My daughter and grandchildren have been helping me cut out patterns. They are also learning to sew and I've been teaching my grandchildren to cook for the last year so I've been downloading new recipes from Etsy. We turn the music up and dance while we mix our ingredients. I put juice in a blender with ice, then top it whip cream. It makes the drinks feel special for the kids. Making healthy snacks is a must so we aren't munching on fatty stuff. My husband is a retired Special Forces Vet so I have been taking care of him inside for a few years now. We are used to being home. I am already helping homeschool one of my granddaughters so getting her two siblings involved was easy. We have been reading books to each other and doing crafts together as well. We've also been cleaning and organizing stuff so that the kids can jump around and do exercises when it is raining outside. My daughter and son work at a memory care facility - they are short staffed and the place is pretty much on lockdown to protect them. The masks have been scaring them a bit so giving books and stuff to do has been calming for they don't really understand what is going on, or they forget. Reading to them is calming and precious because there are many residents with little staff. Our little ones usually pay them a visit but since the virus they haven't had their visits so they feel a little more confused. I thank God for my kids working there - very proud!! Safety and prayers to all of you!

·6 years agoThanks for sharing your advice Samantha! Your illustrations are absolutely beautiful as well. Interestingly, it is the current health crisis which has given me the time to finally open my shop. I was recently placed on indefinite furlough but rather than sit idly, I've been spending my days creating and loving every moment of it. These are unprecedented times and I look forward to engaging with the Etsy community to stay inspired while channeling anxieties into the creative process!
