Etsy Insights: SEO tips for new sellers

Hi, everyone!

Isabella here. I’m one of the Community Managers at Etsy. My team works to share education and resources in our community spaces and establish programs to help sellers grow their business on Etsy. You may have seen my face around these parts before : )

With many new sellers joining Etsy recently, and lots of gifting occasions on the horizon, now seems like a great time to share some tips and best practices for improving your visibility in Etsy search. Optimizing your listings for Etsy search can help you reach new audiences and build your customer base. With that in mind, for today’s Etsy Insight post, I want to focus on two very important parts of each listing: your titles and tags.

There are two phases of how search works: Query matching and ranking. During query matching, a buyer enters a query and we look at the inventory of listings that match that query. From there, the Etsy search ranks the matching listings based on a variety of factors (for example, the listing’s conversion rate or the shop’s customer and marketplace score (think reviews).

Query matching

When a customer types in their search query on Etsy, Etsy search looks at the categories, attributes, titles, and tags that you’ve added to your listings to find matching keywords.

When it comes to categories and attributes, be sure to apply anything that’s relevant to your item. Here are some tips to consider when choosing your titles and tags:

Imagine what buyers would type into the search bar when shopping for an item like yours. Use those phrases in your title!
It’s important to keep the title concise and easy for buyers to read. With this in mind, we suggest picking the 2-4 most relevant phrases and separating them with commas. All other key details can go in your tags.
Be sure to use all 13 tags available to you, and to be descriptive. Your tags can be up to 20 characters long (in English). It’s better to use multiple phrases within a single tag than take up tags with single words. For example, “custom gold bracelet” is stronger than “custom” and “bracelet” and frees up another tag for you to use.
Consider synonyms and regional phrases. If shoppers use regional spellings like jewellery in their search, we’ll still show them listings tagged “Jewelry.” However, we don’t account for some regional phrases. For example, if you sell flip flops and a lot of your customers are in Australia searching for “thong sandals,” you should consider adding “thong sandals” to your tags.
Don’t add keywords in multiple languages. The titles and tags you add should be in the language you choose when setting up your shop. The titles and tags you enter will be translated when we look for listings that match the search query. If you speak multiple languages, you can choose to translate your listings yourself. If you add your own listing translation, you can also add translations for your titles and tags. Learn more here.
Don't worry about plurals. When a shopper enters their query, Etsy looks at the root words for the phrase the shopper typed in and matches them to the root words in your listings' keywords. For example, a search for "books" would still be matched with listings with the tag "book" because they have the same root word.

Ranking

Once Etsy has gathered all the listings that match a buyer’s query, we use the information we have about each listing and shop to rank the listings so people browsing Etsy see the items that they are most likely to purchase earlier in the results. We’ll take a closer look at these factors in a future Etsy Insight, and you can always read about these factors in our Ultimate Guide to Search here.

it’s really encouraging to see the Etsy community helping each other. And thank you @fidosflowers for writing advice about SEO.

ive been opened since Oct 2020 and I have been getting sales slowly. I’ve noticed that my views and visits are very low. The last week had 0 sales amd I’m getting around 14 -20 visits per day. I am feeling very disappointed and disheartened as I get amazing customer reviews on my products but I’m not getting many sales. I've noticed that in your own shop, https://www.etsy.com/shop/flowerhungry/, your titles don't seem to follow some of the accepted seo practices for Etsy. For example, in this listing, https://www.etsy.com/listing/879773723/dog-greenery-gold-flower-collar-pet?ref=shop_home_active_8&frs=1, you have the word "dog" 4 times in the title, with approximately 120 characters. We've been led to believe that words in the title are not to be repeated excessively and that titles are best at around 60 - 80 characters. Are these in fact acceptable seo practices?

Thanks for calling that out, and good catch! I too need to edit some of my listings!

I typically recommend sellers use 2-4 super relevant phrases for the title. I'd also suggest only repeating words across your title if they are part of a phrase you feel is likely to be typed into search by shoppers.

The thing is, I thought Etsy had said they were trying to make the algorithms, like Google's, favor "natural human language," so not a series of separate phrases, but a single grammatically complete thought that a human reader would be able to absorb at a glance.

For example, a shop that sells jewelry might have a title like "Elegant 18 inch freshwater pearl necklace" rather than "Women's necklace, freshwater pearls, 18 inches, elegant jewelry."

Could you confer with the coders and clarify that for us? It would be a big help to know if a series of distinct phrases is still effective (or if perhaps the algorithms have recently changed so that it's effective again).

A thread like this has the potential to be very helpful to all of us. I know it is intended primarily for new sellers, but each time the algorithms are tweaked, really we are all of us "new."

I had the strangest thing....I had a listing taken down because of an I.P. infringment issue from an African Fabric supplier called Vlisco, I had the listing taken down, and I emailed the contact given on the email from Etsy to chase it up. I was flattered that they had noticed me, and asked what the infringement was, I was given an automatic response about counterfeit, and passed onto 2 other email accounts, as they could'nt locate some to answer the query, and now the lisitng is back! Anybody experiened this? Any ideas, what the boo boo, coudl have been? The iteresting thing, is that having new reviewed the listing, I can see that I actually name check the fabric supplier, because I went to the cotton farm in Ghana where they produce the cotton and print the fabrics, it's one of my Ethical business practices to support local, artisan, and heritage. https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/267501154/

Is there a drawback to changing listings titles frequently to see if that help?

Bonjour Maddy, je suis nouvelle ici aussi. Je lis beaucoup de blog sur le sujet de vente sur la plateforme Etsy. C'est un véritable jeu de patience! 3 à 6 mois en moyenne avant d'avoir des résultats! Il faut de bons titres, tags et descriptions pour le moteur de recherche. Ensuite de bonnes photos attrayantes et le plus important quelqu'un d'intéressé au point d'acheter. Je vous suggère de compléter votre profil en y ajoutant des photos. De bien cibler les mots comme: peinture à huile en premier et ensuite toile, vue mer, maritime, bateau... ... le titre de l'œuvre ne reste que indicatif. J'ai mis votre boutique dans mes favoris ainsi que vos oeuvres. Ferez-vous de même avec ma boutique "Couleur d'Esprit"? Merci d'avance et bonnes ventes

Bonjour, j'adore vos articles! les photos sont jolies, mais en effet les titres de vos objets ne sont peut-être pas assez ciblés. J'utiliserais d'abord le terme "bijou" puis "Bracelet" puis "Fil ( matière ou technique)"pour présenter les articles. Les tags sont une énigme et vendre sur Etsy est un jeu de patience. I recently changed my titles from long to short, as Etsy says.

I also changed tags that etsyrank says that nobody search for this, for example wire sculpture and art jewelry to sculpture art, and wire art.

I am still not very sure about how long must be my titles

I have just reopened and rebranded my shop after over 3 years. I felt like a total failure with one sell only before closing it. Now, I decided to sell my baby quilts because it's something I love to make and plan to add art quilts, wallhangings and table runners IF this works out. I have read all I can and still get butterflies when I list a quilt, worried that I'm missing key words and no one will even find the item! Any advice or direction would be appreciated! I may not be the best person to suggest ideas, since I am also a new seller and trying to be noticed. But one thing I noticed that might help is your titles could be longer. I've been told to use all of the characters that are allowed. So maybe Baby quilt, Handmade Quilt, Blue Quilt, Hearts Quilt, Pinwheel Quilt. (I've been told to think about what a person would type into the search bar, and then use those words in your title). Another thing is to use up all of the tags. Your quilts are gorgeous. Hello! As a quilter myself, I can appreciate the time you put into each of your items! From what I've been learning about titles, you need to say what the item is first-- like "Baby Quilt, Handmade Quilt for Baby, Patchwork Quilt, Baby Shower Gift, Crib Sized Quilt," etc.. Just try and imagine what you would enter into a search bar if you were looking for a quilt for a baby. You don't necessarily have to describe the quilt pattern bc most people don't have any idea what patterns are what! But if it's a quilt with say, elephants or trucks, you should put that in the title, like "Baby quilt with Trucks."

Also, your banner image should feature one of your gorgeous quilts! Good luck!!!

So the whole "natural human language" thing went away, and we're going back to putting a series of phrases separated by commas, just don't call it "keyword-stuffing," be concise, but yeah, stuff your concise titles with keywords?

It would be helpful to know for sure whether Etsy has changed the search algorithms back or just didn't communicate the change to everyone internally.

I don't seem to get much traffic on the printable, and I wasn't really sure what keywords/tags to use, etc. I have more items ready to add but haven't done it because I want to use the right info from the start. This is an extremely good idea. I´d like to add one of my listings for your review. I am based in Germany and, consequently, English is not my native language. Therefore, it is difficult to find keywords and tags that match searches done in English. Perhaps, you may have suggestions.
