Etsy Insights: Process Videos
Hi, Etsy Community! My name is Evan and I work on the social team at Etsy, overseeing social video and seller channels. (Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram!) As many of you know, video is a great way to get eyes on your products and tell your shop story, but have you ever thought about using video to go behind the scenes of your process?
These types of videos perform great on social but they can also make for a great listing videos (you can add videos to your listings here!).
Process videos are exactly what they sound like—a video showing either all, or part of the process behind how you create your items. This lets buyers see all of the love and care that goes into making handmade items along with how they’re packed (which is great for vintage sellers).
Process videos are also a great way to experiment with video if you’re not comfortable speaking on camera. Ready to give it a go? Check out the tips and tricks below to get started.
Process video best practices + pro tips:
- Pick a full part of your process. Highlight a portion you’ll be able to shoot from beginning to end. Keep in mind that buyers love seeing the finished product.
- Shoot your video in natural light. As many know, natural light is best for photos. The same holds true for video!
- Clear your filming space to ensure there isn’t any clutter that could interfere with your video
- Set yourself up to film. This could mean using a tripod to shoot or leaning your phone on a stack of books to film in selfie mode. Make sure your process is the star of the show.
- Make sure the details of your process are visible. If your work is small and detailed, be sure that buyers can see every bit with close-up shots. If your work is on a larger scale, be sure to film further away so they can view everything as a whole.
- Shoot vertically in portrait mode. You want to make sure that the action happening in the video is in the center of the frame. By doing this, you’ll be able to crop your video to a square without losing any of the details.
- Most importantly, have fun! Filming your process is also a great way for you to take pride in how your items come to life.

·4 years agoThanks for the information and tips. Designing and selling digitally printed prints and wall art is not something that I thought about capturing in a process video. I have looked at the inspirational examples that many of you have included a link to and I think I have a couple of ideas. If you don't try it, you never know.....so I am off to find my inner Steven Spielberg

·4 years agoI realy love videos.. I always use videos if I wanna show how flexible or silky my fabric absolutely I put on video. And zip options are showed on my video..

·4 years agoI have created videos for most of my sell items in my store, but they aren’t showing up on my main page?The videos download when I’m creating the new sell item, and it shows on that page, but not my main page? Also, the add a video feature only shows on my Etsy Plus page? Do I need Etsy plus to post a video?

·4 years agoI have some great videos I use on TikTok and Instagram showing how I dip my Ebru marbled ornaments, but when I try uploading to my listings, it says they won’t work. What am I doing wrong? They’re just 30-second clips.

I create watercolour paintings, and have recently started adding a section of my process videos to my listings. Etsy can only support a section of my process videos, but I post the entire vid on social media (pinterest) to share with everyone!

·4 years agoGreat video, I think it showcases your product well! The only thing is that your video is a little shaky, I'd invest in something that holds your phone during the video or lean it up against something so that the video stays steady while you're scrolling on the ipad.
If you want to see what I use for shooting my vids I'll send you a photo! It was only 1$ Canadian.
You could also just place your phone in a bowl or mug to get a decent angle to shoot from. I used to do that for my social media posts!

More than half of the items in my shop have a video of finished product. And even though I often record my work and have a bunch of processing videos (as a reminder for future work or for social media), it never crossed my mind to include that part in a product video until I read this thread.
Nevertheless, I gave it a go and reworked the video for one of my artworks here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/971290372/modern-mantel-clocks-fluid-art-clock.
To make a video, I use a DIY over-head stand with opening for my small camera and, well, being ‘old fashion’, I prefer horizontal view :). My process is pretty messy, but it is inevitable when you work with paints.

·4 years agoI have been experimenting with process videos that I post on IG as reels. I use a tripod, a cell phone tripod adapter, and my phone to shoot vertically. There are many intricate steps to complete each of my products. I do my best to show as many production steps as possible in a single video shooting from different angles and utilizing the time-lapse video feature. I then combine and edit the multiple videos using an app (either iMovie or InShot or both). Getting better with time. Everything takes time and patience.

As long as the videos are under 15 seconds, yes, when you upload them to your listings they'll be trimmed and the sound removed.
