Etsy Insights: Pet Shopping Trends

More people view their pets as part of the family, and that’s changing how they shop.
Pet parents are looking for items that reflect the bond they share with their pets, including personalized, handcrafted, one-of-a-kind products.
If you already sell pet products or if you make products for people that can be reimagined as items for pets or pet-themed gifts, this growing category could be an opportunity for your shop. Here are a few trends worth exploring:
Handcrafted pet essentials
Searches for cat beds are up 6% year over year.* Pet parents are choosing handcrafted essentials like woven beds, ceramic bowls, braided collars, and other thoughtfully made products.
Buyers are also responding to elevated design, including muted color palettes, expressive color blocking, and earth-friendly materials like upcycled apparel and natural-fiber accessories.

Gifts for pet lovers
The majority of the pet product category is actually pet-themed gifts for people who love their animals, like pet portraits and mementos, as well as novelty pet clothing, like hats, sweaters, and costumes for pets. Cat gift searches are up 16%, and dog gifts are up 30% year over year.* Pet memorial searches are also up 30% year over year.*
If you make products that accurately match these search terms, be sure to include them in your keywords and descriptions.

Pet personalization
Buyers are looking for custom and made-to-order pet products, with custom dog portrait searches up 7% and cat portrait searches up 17% year over year.*
Pet parents want products that are made for their individual pets. Use the new custom options tools to seamlessly collect all the info you need upfront, like a pet's name, breed, or photo, and avoid back and forth with buyers.

I make printable and digital planners for overwhelmed brains, and the one that’s surprised me most is a pet care planner called Fed and Walked 🐾 a routine sheet, a sitter card and a vet log, made for people who adore their pets and still genuinely cannot remember whether they fed them twice or not at all. What I’ve noticed is that almost all of the pet category is about the bond, which is lovely, but very little of it is about the caring, which is the part that falls apart on a tired or overwhelmed day. Might be an angle worth exploring for the Gotcha Day campaign too, since anyone marking a first Gotcha Day is usually still deep in the working-out-the-routine stage.

I started making memorial pieces because I know how much comfort it can bring to have something tangible that keeps a loved one’s memory close. Pets are family, and losing them leaves such an empty space. Our Oh My Homies shirts mostly feature designs inspired by the pets we love, or fear most like the frog. They may not be made for pets, but they give pet owners a way to celebrate that connection in everyday wear.

·2 weeks ago · EditedIt all started simply enough: I bought an embroidery machine fully intending to embroider flowers on clothes. Fast forward to today, and I’m making plush art dolls of Sphynx cats instead.
I digitize every fold of skin and the finest details of their eyes so each replica captures the cat's true individual character. Sometimes I even embroider the cat's name on its chest. It makes for a comforting keepsake, especially for those remembering a pet who has passed away.
Sphynxes are my absolute favorite to work with. Capturing their distinctive wrinkles, intense gaze, and sleek elegance through machine embroidery is quite a puzzle, but every finished cat turns out completely unique.

I design crochet patterns across many categories, and a while ago I tried my hand at dog sweaters too - my Nori and Kaya designs have since become real favorites with makers who want to crochet something special for their dogs. They are specially designed to fit in a 6x6 embroidery hoop for a neutral and easy finish! I have had a couple of people ask me for custom work, which I can also do upon request. As a jewelry designer, I've been inspired by the special bond between people and their pets. Recently, I've created several Sterling Silver 925 designs featuring cats, dogs, and paw prints, and I've attached a few examples below.
I was especially interested to see that searches for pet gifts and pet memorial products continue to grow. It seems more pet parents are looking for meaningful keepsakes that celebrate the love and memories they share with their pets.

I'm dabbling in an all in one carrier that holds toys, poop bags, leashes, treats, water bottles and tennis balls and can be personalized with the family or pet's name at the top.

·3 weeks ago · EditedMost of the items in my shop are designed to be used by pets: cat toys, snuggle sacks for cats, dogs, guinnea pigs, catnip nap play mats. I do have a few cat themed items such as adult bibs and pillowcases.
My favorite original creation is a dog wreath made out of biscuits that you can give your dog to eat (like an edible candy wreath for your puppy). It's listing will be posted in a week, since I am making more because it is currently sold out. I'll try to remember to post the link here when I have it.

Seeing these trends makes me think it could be a wonderful direction for my shop. 🐾🎨 Here is an older pet portrait I created from a customer’s photo.
