Etsy Insights: Optimizing your cyber sale - tips & best practices
Hi there!
I’m Rosa and I work on the Market Research team here at Etsy. Research is an integral part of how we make decisions, and my job is to help bring both buyer and seller voices and data into conversations around our product and marketing experiences. With Etsy’s Cyber Week Sales Event approaching, we want to bring you some research-backed tips for how to optimize your shop! Insights are based on a September 2020 survey of 860 Etsy shoppers in the United States, and an August 2019 survey of 709 Etsy shoppers in the United States. Please note survey responses reflect buyer purchase intent across wider retail, not just on Etsy.
General Tips
Cyber Week purchases tend to be more about “wants” than “needs”; When we asked Etsy buyers how they shop during Cyber Week, most said they purchase for themselves, and for holiday gifts.
• Recommendation: Consider offering sales on popular self-purchases, as well as bundles (one for me, one for you!)
Shoppers often strategize what to purchase during Cyber Week in advance, browsing ahead of when they plan to buy; 84% of Etsy buyers surveyed said they plan for Cyber Week shopping.
• Recommendation: Preview deals a few days before the big sale. This encourages inspiration-seeking and item-favoriting, and can bring your shop top of mind for when Cyber hits.
2020-Specific Tips
With budget top of mind, some shoppers are opting for fewer, more meaningful items (think personalized/custom, heirloom items, handmade).
• Recommendation: Consider including personalized/customized items in sales for Cyber Week this year, or offering discount engraving/customization on relevant items.
Buyers are looking to retailers to ship gifts to their recipients directly; 7 in 10 buyers reported planning to have gifts mailed directly instead of delivering them in person.
• Recommendation: Consider including optional gift-wrapping/personal note options for purchases.

·5 years agoThanks for the great info. I currently offer gift wrap on my ornaments, but somewhere I need to clarify what to put on the gift card. I usually enclose a printed graphic card with a short thank you on the back, and that is not appropriate for a gift.

·5 years agoI have 20% off in my shop, free shipping and I am spending 5.00 a day with etsy ads and see nothing happening, I am renewing paintings also, what is up? what do I need to do? I have been here since 2008 but became more active last year, I am giving up a lot right now with no results, I know I know you hear this all the time, and the worst year ever, but others are selling, I need to know what else I need to do with out spending a fortune , Please, please advise, Linda Kelly
TheFlowDesign
·5 years agoHey Linda ! Your paintings are BEAUTIFUL but your listings are what's not helping selling them.
I took a look at a couple listings and it's normal that you don't have too many visits or sales.
You need to:
- Add more pictures ! Pics from afar, close-ups, pics who show scale etc
- Put a little bit more info in your descriptions.
- If you want to make international sales, you can't just ask people visiting your shop to contact you for shipping prices, they have to be readily available. So take the time to evaluate and check how much it would cost you per region of the World and add it to your shipping lists.
- You're not using enough tags and the ones you use are not great, and tags are THE way that your listings will show up in searches !! You NEED to add tags such as "original art" "original painting" "acrylics painting" etc etc or I saw a poppy print, you could add "poppy print" "framed print" "floral wall art" etc
You absolutely have to educate yourself on these topics and start by reading the etsy seller's handbook, all the advices Ive told you are in there, and lots more
Have a lovely day

·5 years agoI have a question. I already run a sale of 10% so I should cancel this to run the cyber of 20%? Otherwise will the two sales add their percentages with a result 30%?

·5 years agoIt would be nice if when offering 'checklists' on the Etsy Dashboard, Etsy would warn us if changing a listing is going to reset it's ranking. I did a bunch of 'optimization' and it tanked everything for two weeks. It's bouncing back, but I lost a lot of sales in that time. I would have preferred to create new listings then to edit listings that were working well.

·5 years agoGreat tips! I already started offering gift wrapping and i include a little tag/card. The buyer adds the message they want me to write on the card.
I will be looking forward to making sales that go directly to the gift recipient. Already used the feature for a birthday!!
