Etsy Insights: Incorporating trends into your shop
My name is Nicole Lewis and I am the founder and creative behind Art2theExtreme, home of the Original Rainbow Crayon®. I specialize in customized and personalized crayon design and have been selling on Etsy since 2007. With over 15 holiday seasons on Etsy under my belt, I have found much success focusing on current trends within my Etsy shop and crayon work to improve overall visibility, connect with my customers, and gain national media attention through gift guides and artist features. I’m also an Etsy U Instructor, and love helping others find success on Etsy through one of the many workshops I host. Today, I am sharing some helpful trend-related tips and suggestions to keep in mind while preparing for the upcoming holiday season.
Offer personalization or customization if you don’t already
From my experience people love that a personalized gift can become a focal point, a topic of discussion, a decor item, and a family tradition. I have so many customers that come to my shop holiday after holiday for my personalized name crayons specifically because it is their family tradition to have a set in each grandchild’s stocking or on each dinner plate as a place card for the holiday dinner. Purposeful and personalized gifting comes straight from the heart and many are seeking out purposeful gifts that have meaning, fun, and function.
Let trends guide your seasonal branding
The use of photography is my favorite way to relate to current trends. I suggest incorporating bright, bold colors (magenta, emerald green, or strong blues) for your background images to catch the eye of buyers and provide opportunities for shoppers to associate gift-giving with your products. Bonus if you can incorporate the trending “festive motifs” of vintage Santas, reindeer, and images of snowflakes or houses. You may also consider changing up the look of your shop banner, logo, and product images to reflect the trending themes of the upcoming holiday season. Lastly, be sure to read Etsy’s annual holiday trend guide for inspiration.
Highlight your most timely items
Rearrange your shop listings by moving the trendier, most attention-getting, holiday-ready listings to the front page, allowing those listings to shine and attract new customers. FOMO is real, so use these popular listings to your advantage. I also recommend that you include your seasonal listings and bestsellers with updated photography that reflects holiday trends in your Featured Listing section. This is where you select listings that appear a bit larger at the top of your shop.
I incorporate trends into my business strategy through the use of product photography, holiday branding, and limited edition crayon sets that are seasonal, but specifically on-trend. Do any of these tips resonate with you? Share an example of when you worked a trend into your line. Let us know below!

·4 years agoIf upcycling is still considered trendy, I guess a decent amount of my shop might be considered trendy. I create primitive dolls and home decor from antique quilts which have seen their better days. I make dozens of stuffed hearts from antique quilt (pretty much wiped out at the moment, sorry; I have 2 customers who buy them as soon as they're listed!). While the (small) stuffed hearts are a best seller, I make other types of hearts and many other things from the worn quilts.

·4 years agoGreat tips Nicole!
I’ve definitely used all of these for marketing my products over the past year.
I’ve automated the personalization by creating a free generator on my website (https://lewiscreative.ca/trace), and also wanted to give others the ability to create products for their students to learn to write, using the Teaching Print font. I also offer seasonal freebies and themed tracing activities using the font.
I hope people find the Teaching Print and Teaching Cursive fonts useful to create even faster than before.
