Etsy Insights: How to catch our social team’s eye
Hi friends!
I’m Brigette. I work on Etsy’s Social Media team, and Instagram is my primary focus. It’s my mission to showcase some of the most engaging items available on Etsy, and since we don’t actually own the inventory (that’s all you!), much of my job consists of scouring the site—and our sellers’ Instagram accounts—to surface the beautiful content that you’re already creating.
One of the most frequently-asked questions we get is how to be featured on our channels as a seller. Well, today may just be your lucky day, because I’m sharing one of the best tips for doing just that. It might sound a little surprising, but here it goes:
Photograph your items in multiples.
Simple as that! Kind of. You see, when it comes to posting engaging content on Instagram, it’s all about catching your audience’s eye. And we’ve seen again and again that, for us, group shots are almost always a win. Images that include 2 or more of the same (or similar) items consistently show up as top-performers on the @etsy Instagram, so we’re always looking for them!
Whatever it is you sell in your shop, consider shooting your items in multiples. Line ‘em up, stack ‘em on top of one another, put one thing in the foreground and another slightly behind it—do whatever you’ve got to do to get multiple items in the frame at once.
Bonus points if the items actually extend pa st the frame of the photo. We’ve especially had success with these types of shots on Instagram.
Here are some extra tips to make your group shots even more compelling:
- Shoot in soft, natural sunlight. This is very pleasing to the eye, and helps keep colors looking true.
- Keep images clean and bright. We’d advise against editing a photo too much, but bumping up the brightness (and maybe a teeny bit of contrast) can really work wonders.
- Choose a real environment over a studio. Real, textured backgrounds—like a wood table or a cement floor—make an image feel tangible and real.
- Props are not necessary. Check the @etsy Instagram feed for yourself: Most of our top-liked images are of just the item and nothing else!
- Avoid the use of watermarks. As a rule, we don’t feature images that include text or graphics of any kind.
- Consider repurposing your top-performing Instagram photos as item listing images in your shop! If they grabbed the attention of your audience on Instagram, there’s a good chance they’ll grab the eye of a buyer—or perhaps a certain social media specialist ;)—on Etsy.
What have you seen perform well on your own social channels?
