Etsy Insights: Early 2023 trends

Hi folks,

I’m Mary Kinney, and I work on the editorial team here at Etsy, and I’m excited to share our new insights report for early 2023 trends, which includes industry insights, Etsy search data, and tips for implementing these trends in your shop. I hope this Marketplace Insights Report will help guide you as you shift gears from the holiday rush to taking on the new year!

Here are some trend highlights to inspire you for your best year yet! And remember: Integrating these trends into your shop doesn’t necessarily have to be new listings and inventory (though it could be!)—you can also utilize them in your photo styling, titles and tags, and listing videos.

The year-over-year (YoY) increases below were calculated by comparing search volume from August to November 2022 to the same period of 2021.

Duality is the major theme for this year, as shoppers are expected to play with complementary colors, mix and match different styles, and incorporate both contemporary and vintage items into their homes and outfits.

Etsy’s colors of the year: indigo and honeycomb - In step with the theme of duality, Etsy has named two colors of the year, representing opposing hues on the color wheel. Indigo symbolizes wisdom, and can add depth to any listing; whereas honeycomb embodies the hopeful optimism shoppers are adopting for 2023.

Marble marvels - This timeless material adds brightness, dimension, and sophistication to a space, and shoppers are embracing marble throughout their homes in fresh ways, including new colorways like green and burgundy and statement pieces with heavy veining, from custom-carved sinks to vintage bookends and candlestick holders.

252% YoY increase in searches containing “marble coaster set”

Y2K Grunge - The early aughts fashion revival isn’t new, in 2023 we’re seeing a distinctly grunge-inspired shift take hold. Part ‘90s punk, part futuristic Y2K style, this trend has shoppers searching for items like cargo pants, Y2K hoodies, and fishnet bodysuits. Recently, shoppers are bringing in more and more goth influences to this trend, especially after a certain spooky TV show has taken the internet by storm.

118% YoY increase in searches containing “vintage grunge sweater”

Gorpcore - Named after the hiker’s go-to trail mix (an acronym for good ol’ raisins and peanuts), this trend combines outdoorsy gear and athleticwear with elevated, streamlined style—think of it as the “glamping” equivalent in fashion. Padded jackets with quilted textures, pants with ample pocket space, high-fashion athletic wear, and retro-inspired puffer vests are on the rise.

129% YoY increase in searches containing “racing jacket”

Contemporary cabin decor - Some shoppers are hoping to capitalize on what some are calling “the great indoors” by creating a sense of cozy sanctuary in their homes. Trendy cabin getaways have made their way into everyday decor, offering a new take on the traditional rustic style, sometimes taking a nod from ‘70s-inspired boho designs.

85% YoY increase in searches containing “earth tone wall art”

Jewelry stacking - Stacking rings have long been a trend here at Etsy, but necklaces and earrings are joining in on the trend. Think items like ear cuffs, huggies, and simple layering necklaces that pair well together. Pro tip: This is a particularly good trend to tap into for Valentine’s Day.

51% YoY increase in searches containing “huggie earrings”

Oversized accoutrements - Extra-large accessories and bags are having a moment. Large bows, super-sized bags, puffy sleeves, and bubble hems are making a splash with shoppers, and tap into another trend mentioned in the latest Marketplace Insights Report: dressing for the inner child.

215% YoY increase in searches containing “puff sleeve glove”

Metallic accents - On the flip side of the earthy, contemporary cabin vibes, some shoppers are looking to items like chrome accent decor, iridescent vases, metal statement lighting, and vintage glassware that cater to a futuristic feel, while also tapping into a nostalgia for Y2K and 1970s space age decor.

56% YoY increase in searches containing “space age furniture”

For Valentine’s Day, celebratory colors are the latest take on last year’s mood-boosting hues trend. For a full y2k-influenced V-day, consider digitally-inspired hues like neon pink and lilac, including graphics like cheeky cherries into your spread, and showcasing simplified tablescapes.

On the gifting front, I’m seeing searches for “unique gift handmade gift,” “husband gift,” and “girlfriend gift” on the rise, and shoppers have a keen eye toward personalization ahead of Valentine’s Day.

Thank you for your tips. I am keen to embrace the new colour trends of Indigo and Honeycomb into my macrame soft furnishings and crystal jewelry. I'm also dabbling in recycled tshirt macrame floor mats with lots of texture - will see how these go. My only concern is competing with shops who sell items obtained from overseas at a fraction of the cost.

Raise your hand if you've been selling on Etsy for a while? Going on 11 years over here!

I read these trends every year, and I don't necessarily let the trends influence my PRODUCTS, so much as I let it influence my PHOTOGRAPHY.

"Stacking" in jewelry is starting to be more popular? Okay, I take what I have, and I "stack" them in a listing photo. This way, a customer can SEE what it would like on them in a new light—in congruence with the latest trends.

These articles are also rich with listing photos, so you can get a good idea of the AESTHETIC that Etsy is looking for. When we make our listings, customers are never looking at them on their own. They are looking our listings NEXT to someone else's. Etsy is giving some clues on what they think customers would like to see MORE of.

Last thing, I notice that they start to change listing CATEGORIES and update them based off of these exact trends. I take a look at my listings and see, "Oh! A new category! Great. I'll stick this in there for more exposure."

Love these thank you! I've started making wire wrapped rings again and I'm also incorporating the colours for this year - Indigo and Honeycomb. It suits my themes so so well. Really love this year's trends! Only downside is I'm in the UK and have had to pause international sales due to RM cuber attack. This makes me so sad as I sold suite 50/50 domestic and international. Fingers crossed it's fixed soon.
