Etsy Insights: Craft Supplies Trends
Hi there!
I’m Emi, the Craft Supplies Category Manager on Etsy’s Merchandising team. Today, I’m here to share some timely insights for Craft Supplies sellers.
Since the beginning of April, we have seen unprecedented growth in sales within the Craft Supplies & Tools category. Subcategories seeing notably strong growth include: Fabric & Notions, Floral & Garden Supplies, and Patterns & How To.
As shoppers began spending more time at home, buyer appetite for crafts and DIY projects surged in all shapes and forms — including embroidery, quilting, gardening, knitting, and tie-dye. We also saw the surge for face masks generate demand for sewing materials like fabric, elastic, and patterns. Interest ranges from simple cottons in solid colors to textured fabrics and uplifting novelty prints.
It has been incredible to see the creativity coming from this seller community in these areas and I’ve been inspired by your fresh designs and reimagined DIY kits!
Looking ahead, here are a few tips to keep in mind:
- DIY kits are resonating with shoppers, who are purchasing kits for themselves as well as as gifts. Consider offering DIY kits for upcoming seasons as well as gifting occasions.
- 956% YoY increase in searches on Etsy for “embroidery kit”
- Consider offering beginner-friendly crafts to meet shoppers’ growing interest in learning a new creative skill.
- 87% YoY increase in searches on Etsy for “easy crochet”
- With school taking place online and some summer camp plans on hold, shoppers are looking for ways to keep their kids learning as well as entertained.
- 688% YoY increase in searches on Etsy for “kid craft"
- Plants and gardening continue to be popular, even for shoppers stuck indoors. People are making their spaces more green by stocking up on indoor and outdoor plants, succulents, seed kits, terrariums, garden tools, and plant markers.
- 53% YoY increase in searches on Etsy for “succulent”

Craft supply sellers: what types of items are seeing the most traffic in your shop?

·4 years agoI have noticed a HUGE increase in people selling items sold from Hobby Lobby as supplies, including, but not limited to: ready to use Christmas ornaments and decorated bottle brush Christmas trees that are ready to display. I don't feel these meet the criteria for "craft supplies".
Another seller is selling Disney stuffed dolls that are currently being sold on Amazon and are not handmade. Yet someone else is selling overstocks from department stores, such as socks, that are not vintage or handmade. (She even talks about where her items are coming from in her bio section.) I reported this shop months ago and she is still in business.
Can Etsy do something to monitor these listings? I feel like since Etsy has been advertising on television, its opened up a plethora of shops selling things that don't qualify as "handmade" or a true "craft supply".
I miss the old Etsy with true handmade items, true vintage items and items that meet the definition of a true "craft supply."
