Etsy Insights: 5 Ways to Share Your Story Across Your Shop

My team is always on the lookout for shops to feature across Etsy’s marketing. One thing we’ve noticed is that shoppers on Etsy aren’t just looking for products. They’re looking for something personal, meaningful, and with a story behind it. That’s why we look for those small, personal details incorporated across your shop. Those details connect to tell not only your shop’s story, but also convey its journey and evolution if you’ve been on the platform for a while. Your story highlights what makes your shop special and can keep buyers coming back for more. 🧡

Our marketing reaches 90 million buyers, and we’re focused on highlighting the real people behind the items to build authentic, lasting connections. Today, about 42% of our buyer marketing includes seller details—this year, we’re aiming for 80%.

Here are five simple ways to bring your story to life across your shop and why it’s worth doing:

1. Show the human behind the product

Buyers on Etsy want to know who they’re buying from! Adding your name, role, and photo to your Shop Team section helps them connect better with you as the shop owner.

A buyer’s curiosity doesn’t just stop at you. If it’s a team effort, give them a complete picture of who does the embroidery, packs their parcel, and replies to their messages. Use your About section to easily introduce all of your shop members.

I know opening a shop is not easy, especially in growing the shop, but I really love it when someone says they like the designs I make. I also used to work at a shop on Etsy, but because someone didn't like me, they said bad things to my boss and I lost my job. My boyfriend helped me open this shop, and my boss used to always tell me that I would never be able to succeed with my shop, but I believe I can.

I have two Etsy shops where I sell t-shirts and gift items. I’ve been managing my t-shirt shop for about 3 months and I use the POD (print-on-demand) system for production.

I’m married and have two daughters. Unfortunately, my spouse is unable to work due to health issues, and because I need to take care of my children, I’m not able to work a full-time job either.

Here is my story

Australian vintage, artisan-made pieces, and natural-history works from Western Australia.

ORIGINS

Heart's Lore is a living archive of vintage, artisan-made and natural-history works — where old objects, field notes, handmade knowledge and Western Australian place come together.

The shop began with a month-long deadline to clear a family home. What started as an estate task became something more meaningful: finding new homes for objects too significant to discard. Craft books, textiles, maps, maritime pieces, rail ephemera, tools and studio objects all carried traces of use, skill, memory and place. Some of these stories are shared through the blog linked on this page.

Over time, Heart’s Lore has grown into a wider curatorial project — a place for old things worth keeping, and for new works made by hand; and through journeys to remote wilderness, observation, documentation, field notes and identification of the natural world.

THE NAME

Heart’s Lore is an anagram of Hartley and Worsley — my mother’s middle name, and her husband’s family name.

“Lore” means knowledge passed between generations: not always written down, but carried in hands, voices, objects, habits, materials and stories.

Each of the objects in this collection carries traces of these stories, which are tales of migration, hardship, enterprise and toil, building family, community and connecting this place to a wider world.

FAMILY LINEAGE

Heart’s Lore reflects four generations of Australian makers, collectors and experimenters.

My great-grandparents were skilled in tailoring and needlework. My mother Arienne, still a maker and experimenter at 91, has spent a lifetime collecting, making and noticing the value in useful and beautiful things. Many of the objects in this shop were hers, or came through family collections.

I continue that lineage as a curator, visual artist, designer-maker and educator, drawn to objects that reveal process: craft magazines with reader annotations, tools worn smooth from years of work, textiles that show evidence of handcraft, and pieces that carry the marks of the maker. And my daughter Ra carries the tradition forward as a trained artist and maker with a love of vintage and nostalgia.

PLACE, FIELDWORK & NATURAL HISTORY

I came to Western Australia as a young qualified horticulturalist, trained through the Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium in South Australia, and as a practising artist trained at the Stanley St School of Art and Craft. I was drawn here by the extraordinary flora, fauna and ancient landscapes — a place where plants, geology, climate and time have shaped an unusually rich and distinctive natural world.

That sense of place sits at the heart of my original work. My West Australian wildflower series grows from field trips, observation and research: travelling through regional and remote areas, biodiverse national parks such as Fitzgerald River National Park, local bushland, coastal areas and inland landscapes; photographing, recording, identifying and studying plants in situ before translating them into designed works.

My wider practice spans visual art and crafts, botanical sciences and landscape design, and teaching. What connects these fields is a fascination with systems — natural and human — how knowledge is carried through plants, objects, landscapes, tools, annotations, patterns and marks of use. And importantly how interdependent these systems are.

NEW WORKS

Alongside the vintage and estate collection, Heart’s Lore is gradually stocking original works inspired by field observation, botanical science, natural history and Australian place.

These include the emerging West Australian Wildflower and Australian Insects series, as well as herbarium-style sheets, nature observation pages, cards, postcards, prints and printed curiosities. Some works are based on my own field photography and observations; others grow from research, identification, reference material, drawing, painting and digital design.

From Walyalup / Fremantle, Western Australia — a historic port city on the Derbal Yerrigan / Swan River, at the edge of the Indian Ocean — Heart’s Lore brings together old objects, inherited craft knowledge, field study and original works shaped by place — and shares them with you.

Thank you for the insight, it does help explain something I have often struggled to put into words - why Etsy isn't exactly suitable for me.

I sell art supplies, including handmade metallic watercolours, and I have always felt slightly uneasy about making the shop too much about me. Even the paintings and lettering samples in my listings are there mainly to demonstrate the paint I've made: how it behaves, how it catches light, how it looks on different surfaces.

For some shops, the maker’s personal story is naturally central. For an art-supply shop, though, I feel the role is a little different. The product is not meant to be the end of the creative story — it is meant to become part of someone else’s.

That may be why the usual language of “passion”, “joy”, “made with love”, “supporting a dream”, and “home studio” has always felt a bit difficult, not to say dishonest. Not because those things are false, but because after a while they can become almost indistinguishable from shop to shop.

I would be very interested to see more advice for sellers whose “story” is quieter: material-led, process-led, or use-led — where the focus is less on the seller as a personality and more on helping the buyer understand what the item can do in their own work.

I think you are not seeing it the right way. You are making the paint yourself! That is craftmanship, that is skill. Your shop will definitely gain by you showing some of your process or showing you at work. It is not obvious just browsing your listing that you actually do it yourself. So, I would say, on the contrary this is for people like you.

I have been selling on here for about 6 months and I have never been more disappointed and frustrated by a non existent support team in my life. It’s shockingly bad. I have been attempting to get a simple issue resolved and have not received any resolution. I have had to request support over and over, having to explain the issue over and over. I have been told to wait 48 hours for 17 days. I can’t receive earnings because of my issue. I want my money. Etsy refuses to help me. Thinking about small claims court but I’m not even sure that will help. Etsy has an F rating on the BBB site and they clearly don’t care because they have a monopoly.

I’ve spent most of my life building at the intersection of creativity and technology.

Hello, I’m Mounir, the founder of this small family workshop specialized in authentic handmade Moroccan rugs.

The story of each rug begins when I personally receive the customer’s order and carefully follow every detail to ensure the right size and design are chosen.

After that, my mother, together with talented women artisans from the Atlas Mountains, starts handweaving the rug using natural wool and traditional techniques passed down through generations.
Each rug takes time, patience, and dedication, as every knot is carefully woven by hand with love and attention to detail.

Once the weaving process is completed, Saleh takes care of cleaning, preparing, and carefully packaging the rug to make sure it arrives safely and beautifully to its new home.

I just found out today that AI and some Automated System is regulating how many orders we receive. I was told that by someone thru Etsy Chat. I have just shy of 700 items listed. So much time and effort went into growing my listings and to learn this today was Very Disappointing. I have a 5 Star Rating, buy my labels thru Etsy, signed in for Offsite Ads. I was harassed a couple of months ago. When I click on their name it gives me the "Uh Oh!" message telling me this person is inactive but yet they are able to Favorite some of my items yesterday. I accepted 2 orders from different people in a U.S. state that is over 2600 miles away and according to the Post Office it takes them 3 weeks to get there. I, though, once I received their orders sent them their orders the next day. Etsy needs to have their AI and Automated System that regulates how many orders we receive in one day to program it that the mailing time Should Be by when it was Mailed. Not the delivery date! I am so frustrated. I guess I am just going to sit here and watch for orders but I really don't want to waste my time with more listings knowing now that orders are being limited by AI and some Automated System and not by how well a shop is really doing.
