Etsy Insights: 5 Tips for Getting A Five-Star Review ⭐
Hi everyone!
I’m Divya from Etsy’s Community Team. I’ve worn many hats here at Etsy, including writing for the Etsy Journal where I often curated product reviews for items we wanted to feature—to give our readers genuine feedback from previous buyers. This means I’ve read many 5 star reviews! There are some common themes that have stood out to me over time, so today I’d like to share:
🏅 Quality is key: This might be obvious, but exceptional quality prompts buyers to review your items. But what really stands out in their reviews is that the quality exactly matched their expectations. So even if you sell vintage items that come with a bit of wear-and-tear or you create pottery items by hand so they have certain imperfections in their shape—most buyers appreciate it when you clearly mention what they should be expecting from their purchase (before they make it!).
💬 Quick communication: Some buyers checkout with zero questions but others might have doubts or custom requests. These are the ones who, if they go through with the purchase, might come back to review the item—just because of how your conversation helped them with their decision.
📦 Pay attention to packaging
You might think packaging isn’t as important as your product, but many buyers may disagree. Exceptional packaging, that keeps the item safe, is consistently mentioned in five-star reviews. And buyers can absolutely tell when you’ve put thought into it—efforts to be sustainable and reduce waste are always appreciated!
📅 Set realistic timelines
From anniversaries and birthdays to the first day of school and last day of work, so many buyers turn to Etsy for memorable gifts. And while we know there can sometimes be unexpected delays, buyer reviews often call out a perfectly-timed delivery. Remember: It doesn't have to be a quick delivery so much as an accurate estimate of the delivery timeline—we know some of your special items are made on order and can’t be shipped overnight.
❣️ A heartfelt thank you note
Last but not the least, a thank you note can be the personal touch that inspires your customers to leave a great review. Share a little about the making of their item and what you hope they feel when they see it for the first time. And you can also add a subtle nudge for them to share photos or tag your shop.
We're always on the look out for special reviews that can melt anyone’s heart. What was the most memorable review you’ve ever received? Share with us in the comments below!

·8 months agoHi everyone! I am new on Etsy and I have worked really hard as everyone else to sell good products for the customer. If there is anyone that can give me advice on making my first sell, I would really appreciate it. I trying to stay positive and not get down on myself. To keep going because I know it takes time. I have been getting visits and favorites but, no sales still. Any advice would be helpful!

·8 months agoHey!
I finally have earned my first etsy sale and main part - GOOD REVIEW. Which I am super excited about, because lots of different sellers said some negative things about my ebooks not even seeing them.
My advice for receiving 5star review would be definitely - be honest about what you sell. If you are honest, if you don't fool people, everything will be okay.

·8 months agoHi everyone, (I hope this is not too off topic.. and my apologies in advance - I used AI to revise my writing below )
I recently had a customer leave a review that was clearly directed at the repeated notifications from the platform, saying they had already answered and to "stop sending me any more." Since I never personally ask my customers for reviews, it was frustrating to see a negative experience generated by an automated system that I can't control.
As a buyer myself, I know those frequent review pushes can get a bit overwhelming! We want our customers to be happy, and these persistent notifications can unintentionally create frustration that gets directed right back at our shops.
I believe giving sellers a small bit of control over the notification frequency could make a huge difference in customer happiness across the platform.
What if Etsy offered a simple selection for review reminders, like this:
Standard Push (Current): For new shops or those who want maximum review accumulation.
Reduced Push: An option to significantly limit the number of notifications sent after a sale (e.g., just one or two reminders instead of several).
Seller-Managed/Disabled: An option for sellers who prefer to rely solely on their personalized packaging/notes and want to ensure the customer receives no automated pushes from Etsy.
This feature would allow us to tailor the post-sale experience to our brand's customer service style, prevent customer burnout, and ensure that reviews truly reflect the product and the service we provide, not the platform's notification system.
What do other sellers think? Has this issue impacted your shop, and would you appreciate having this kind of flexibility?

AND you forgot one - responding to all reviews also encourages more reviews. Ask Google.

·10 months agoThe way you choose to package your items definitely makes a difference when it comes to getting a positive review! One of my best reviews stated just that saying unwrapping her purchase felt more like receiving a gift made especially for her. I really appreciated that feedback. Here's the full review:
"I shop at Etsy a lot, and almost all of my transactions have been good or great, but occasionally, something I have ordered has come so exquisitely and lovingly packaged that it felt more like a gift to me than a purchase. That was the case with this seller. I purchased the intention paper for a special ceremony, and the paper is beautiful enough on its own, but it arrived packaged with dried roses, which just makes it so special for the planned purpose. I would highly recommend this seller. All expectations exceeded! This transaction was the next level beyond great! Thank you for brightening my day!"

·10 months agoGreat communication with the owner, was able to customise to my husband’s measurements. They always kept me updated throughout the whole process. The order arrived earlier than expected which was a bonus. The quality and feel of the material used for the Sherwani gives it that expensive and luxurious look. Highly recommend ordering from here. A +++.

·10 months agoThis seems like a great time to address a recurring issue that can result in lower reviews — when descriptions aren’t visible or easy to find, it can cause buyer expectations to fall short.
What options do sellers have to address this concern? Even when we provide photos with rulers or recognizable items for scale, buyer confusion often remains.
Although sellers can meet all five tips, the persistent issue is that many buyers still miss the description.
