What does it mean to be a creative artist or crafter?
When I joined this team, I thought we would explore the creative aspects of creating art and, of course, crafts. When I teach silversmithing classes, I try to emphasize the concept of thinking outside of the proverbial Box. I tell my students if they can visualize the form, then they can create it, if they have the skill sets.
In elementary school, most teachers emphasize coloring inside of the lines or forms boundaries. Does staying inside of the lines encourage or promote creativity or new ideas?
It seems the most recent attempts on this Creative Thinkers board is to play a variety of word games. If this is promoting creativity in your art or craft, please tell us how this is happening and what your process is.
Personally, I am not interested in playing word games on this team. I think we can do better than this.

·7 months ago · Edited@PinkCoyoteJewelry Thanks for the question. This is quite a deep one and something I have thought a lot about. As a trained visual artist, jeweler/ metal smith and 3d designer, as well as an art teacher… I believe that creativity and the capacity to create art with intention, is fundamentally a human development. It is what separates us from other animal species. It is a form of language, and language is the foundation of our social structure.
Art is fundamentally useless. However through art we express and experience aesthetics, concepts such as beauty, truth, and can communicate ideas through visual means and visual language.
In short what it means to be a creative artist is what it means to be human.

·9 months agoIn regards to creating, a problem I tend to have; I will make a quick sketch of a piece I wish to create. Sometimes I will take paper and roughly draw facial features right onto the head itself (which is a styrofoam ball or egg). The biggest challenge I then have is how to best implement that idea; what materials I will use to create the facial expression (or additional features like ears, hair, cowl, etc.). Implementaion is often difficult for me, and I often need to step away from what I'm doing, especially if I'm not accomplishing what I set out to do.
I do like the Word Games in this Thread. It's like the water cooler at work. And it makes you think; I find quite a few of them challenging. But it's creative, challenging and fun as well.

·10 months agoPersonally, I thought I wasn't creative for the longest time because I couldn't come up with anything "new". But, I was really good at taking an idea and running with it, or looking at something in front of me and figuring out some way to make it better. Eventually I figured out that that is still being creative! Now for my jewelry business, I often get all of my beads and parts out in front of me, and treat making jewelry almost like a puzzle, looking for things that go together and finding patterns in the chaos. I guess it's still kind of like "coloring inside the lines", but in my own creative way. :)

OP10 months agoIt's a start, a first step! Thank you for thinking about it. My studio is one big chaotic experience because like you, I have to have all of my metal parts spread out in front of me, along with a cup of coffee and tools. It is amazing how patterns can just jump out at you, and a major new design is born, LOL.
